IDRC x NHRA West Coast Nationals June 13, 1999. Hypersports Racing. We shipped our cars from Hawaii, raced in the most competitive class, won the race and then drove it back 40 miles to our friends house. I feel it was an important race and win. Not only for my team and I, but for the our industry as well. Final round, we went up against the worst looking car with questionable aero dynamics. I couldn’t let that thing represent the number 1 spot in the most competitive class in the biggest race of the year. I got the holeshot and my team had dialed in my car to do the rest up top. Import drag racing was maturing. Prior to this race season, it was pretty gully. it wasn’t rare that fights, vandalism and sometimes shootings would happen at the races. As NHRA teamed up with IDRC, everyone geared up to get big sponsors. Some people actually landed some pretty big sponsors. Me? I couldn’t(didn’t want to) commit to the full season of racing and couldn’t fathom the thought of having to deal with corporate assholes. I already had some of the best sponsors. One of them being Alphanumeric which I think really changed the landscape in motorsports I still see today. When my friends and I got into racing Honda’s, it was punk. Sure, we could’ve built American V8s with the ease of the Summit and Jegs catalogs but that was old and done already. We built things from scratch and learned a life long set of skills. Best of all, I met great people and some of my best friends through it all.
