Rob Peterson recounts how he first got into the world of rock music. It came about when he heard a little diddy called "Enter Sandman" by the self-defining band Metallica. "I would be in the backseat with my parents and I would say 'put on Enter Sandman!' All the time, every day. I must have heard it a hundred times a week." Indeed, Metallica's famous single from 1991 is an inspiration for multiple people, even to intimidate others (it being used in the opening of the Iraq war to intimidate the Iraq soldiers to put down their weapons in 2003). For Rob, Metallica's singing is the thing he takes away from the band as a whole. "The way he sings, even the '-uh' at the end, is what really made me want to be a rocker." James Hetfield punctuates the sound waves and permeates into the inner ear of the listener, his throaty Exit light, enter night. Take my hand, off to never never land," delivery catches the attention of casual radio-listeners and makes them instantaneous fans. The wall of sound from the guitars and the thumping of the drums add enhancement to the rest of the song and create an atmosphere for Hetfield to sing his nightmarish lullaby. Even the tearing and grungeful guitar solo make the statement for the lyrics, the singing is just the cream corn of the song. MUSIC VIDEO SUNDAY!

This week the drummer, Ryan, shares with you how the process began when the band was writing the song "Tears for Me," off the new record soon to be released. "I was on an American Hi-Fi binge at the time. On their second album, their lead single really got to me. 'The Art of Losing' struck a chord with me musically. The way it's set up is like a layer cake. It starts off with just the drums, then the guitar, the back-up vocals and finally the vocals all join in." Indeed, the stadium song starts with the drums thrashing their way to your ear buds and when Stacy Jones comes into the song the listener feels like standing up and moshing, screaming the lyrics of "one, two, f*ck you, don't tell me what to do! I don't want to be like you!" "When the time came to start writing our second batch of songs I wanted to pay homage to this single. (Lead singer) Rob came over to my house and I told him what I had in mind. I wrote down some lyrics and he noodled on his acoustic guitar, putting together the parts. We decided to have the drums start the song, followed by the guitar, bass, second guitar part and then Rob coming in." The unique drum part that starts the song sounds like a distant cousin to "The Art of Losing," but that is where the similarities end. The chorus part stands out from the song, as it is a clean part whereas the verse and bridge are both distorted and grungy. The music may sound similar to American Hi-Fi but the lyrics have no common denominator. "The Art of Losing" has a distinct message of "I don't care what you did or will do, I'm my own person and I will blaze my own path. No matter where it takes me, I will be happy." One Year Reign's song, "Tears for Me," is more of a thank you letter. "When I sat down to pen the rough sketch of the song, I wanted to show my gratitude to those who helped me through a relationship. They gave me a cure for this woman's poison. This song is for them." If anything can give the song the air of a glorified thank you letter, it's the chorus line. "You saved me and you freed me from the tyranny that I could not live without. She plagued me but you cured me from those tears for me that I could not live without." Ryan and Rob's use of alliteration and rhyming makes the love letter to Ryan's friends a punk rock outing.
