If I'm being honest, any relationship with Mephiles is destined to go bad. At least for me, with the way I characterize him.
For me, he's sadistic, narcissistic, hypocritical, apathetic, definitely uses people to his advantage, (maybe even a guilt tripper at some point, to gain sympathy from others, like when he said, "NO, I JUST WANT TO EXIST!!" He's trying to make someone feel bad for him and let him continue his parade of destruction.. even though if someone outwardly showed empathy to him, he'd feel disgusting by it since he hates being pitied), and would rather die than be saved/hates showing any form of weakness. He views love as a "waste of time in a world of hate", and thinks it will be someone's downfall (or weakness) because they're exposing too much of themselves.
Overall, he's possibly the worst person you could be with in a relationship with, he's a terrible person and nothing can fix that really. He uses people to his own gain, and wouldn't care if they died (but, begrudgingly he would hold onto memories of them if they were "loyal" to him.)
With Mephiles, I don't know if this is bad or not, I relate to him, a lot, someone's told me I'm a fictive leech, and maybe that's why I can see through him so easily. Maybe, it's also why I give him terrible attributes, while also making him charming enough to lure people into a false sense of security, because that's how he is. He's horrible yet he hides it. But, when it comes to something he deems weak, he shuts it off and tries to destroy it immediately, possibly out of fear of being found out/seen through (for simple terms, someone being able to see his weaknesses, because he's always using this powerful persona he doesn't want people knowing there's a way to defeat him.)
With Meptal, it's of course, one-sided. Metal views Sonic and Shadows relationship as something he MUST have, to be BETTER than, more POWERFUL than. So, when Metal finds out about Mephiles he immediately wants to have that so nobody else can. Over time, Metal forms a sort of "endearment" towards Mephiles, he doesn't know why exactly, he's not supposed to be programmed with anything related to feelings. Mephiles, on the other hand, resents this, sure teaming up isn't bad, he could get what he wants, but, when he agreed to, he immediately noticed Metal's mood shift towards him, which, guess what? Caused him to back away and shut himself out. Despite this, Metal still tried, because he's a stubborn little cunt.
Metal's like a "it's just temporary.. made for power... I think I might be gay." While Mephiles is, "maybe, it could work (manipulating Metal), and- oh no it sees through me."
