Jennifer Egan, On Writing
Read at the level at which you want to write. Reading is the nourishment that feeds the kind of writing you want to do. If what you really love to read is y, it might be hard for you to write x.
Exercising is a good analogy for writing. If youâre not used to exercising you want to avoid it forever. If youâre used to it, it feels uncomfortable and strange not to. No matter where you are in your writing career, the same is true for writing. Even fifteen minutes a day will keep you in the habit.
You can only write regularly if youâre willing to write badly. You canât write regularly and well. One should accept bad writing as a way of priming the pump, a warm-up exercise that allows you to write well.

Not all toxic people are cruel and uncaring. Some of them love us dearly. Many of them have good intentions. Most are toxic to our being simply because their needs and way of existing in the world force us to compromise ourselves and our happiness. They arenât inherently bad people, but they arenât the right people for us. And as hard as it is, we have to let them go. Life is hard enough without being around people who bring you down, and as much as you care, you canât destroy yourself for the sake of someone else. You have to make your wellbeing a priority. Whether that means breaking up with someone you care about, loving a family member from a distance, letting go of a friend, or removing yourself from a situation that feels painful â you have every right to leave and create a safer space for yourself.

âWe met in college. He walked me home from school every day for five years. We would talk about everything: how many kids we wanted, how we wanted to raise them, our roles in the home, where we wanted to live, and even where we wanted to go on vacation. So there really havenât been many surprises. A lot of couples only seem to talk about important things if theyâre forced to make big decisions. And there can be this moment of: âI didnât really know you.â And thereâs pressure to make a decision. And thatâs when the biggest arguments seem to happen. Weâve luckily managed to avoid that because itâs all been discussed before. Weâve been married for fifteen years but we still walk home together from work every night. Weâre actually doing that right now.â
This is legit the sweetest thing ever.Â
Well ainât that the truth.Â

Saltworks by Motoi Yamamoto
Yamamoto Motoi (born in Onomichi, Hiroshima in 1966) is an internationally renowned artist who calls his native Japan home. Motoi is known for working with salt, often in the form of temporary, intricate, large-scale installations. Salt, a traditional symbol for purification and mourning in Japanese culture, is used in funeral rituals and by sumo wrestlers before matches.
Motoi forged a connection to the substance while mourning the death of his sister, at the age of twenty-four, from brain cancer, and began to create art out of salt in an effort to preserve his memories of her. His art radiates an intense beauty and tranquility, but also conveys something ineffable, painful, and endless.
âDrawing a labyrinth with salt is like following a trace of my memory. Memories seem to change and vanish as time goes by; however, what I seek is to capture a frozen moment that cannot be attained through pictures or writings,â Motoi has said.
