I normally am not vocal about things, but as I am now apparently directly involved, I need to make it clear that I do not condone the use of AI for creative work. This needed to be said out loud now as my silence could be misinterpreted as my consent for this and I want to make it clear, I do not approve nor have I given anyone permission for this.
I've been in the fandom game long enough to have come to appreciate and love how we inspire each other and sometimes even build off of each other to create fabulous work. However, that cannot be said when it comes to AI-generated work.
It takes time to think of ideas. They don't come immediately and sometimes even when we, the creators, are equally desperate for content, for something more and amazing, the ideas do not come. Therefore, it's a precious gift whenever the muse strikes. That excitement you feel when the muse hits cannot be compared to the instant gratification you get from using AI to generate content. There is no struggle, no passion, no true thought. Ideas come from experience, from interests, from our likes, our dislikes, our joys, our painful memories, our love of things. AI has none of that.
And this continues on to the actual creating process, whether it's writing or drawing or other forms of medium. There is a specific way to convey your story to others, the method that just perfectly reflects how you want to say it and by extension, reflects how you are as a person. That's why sharing content created is so personal, because you're sharing yourself. It's also so exciting because you keep trying, keep creating, keep reaching out for that form of writing, that specific drawing style, that feels so right, that feels like you. The writing techniques you're especially fond of, breaking the rules because it just doesn't feel right with what you're working on, figuring out what comes out so poetically with the drama that would make others shudder and cringe, but sounds so romantic and dreamy to you.
These experiences can also be painful because we sometimes reach for the perfection in our mind but find it impossible to grasp. There's also the fear of "what if they make fun of me? What if I'm not enough?". But that's why our communities are created, to support and love each other. To prop each other up through our struggles and gush together with our shared experiences, both the pain and the joy.
I am not angry that someone has taken a part of me to create AI-generated work.
I'm just sad that there are so many people missing out on what makes us human by relying on AI like this for a moment of instant gratification. There's a lot more to experience and enjoy out there than like this :(
