It was weird, Matt could have sworn someone was having a conversation, but this man was walking alone with his bird. Matt didn’t know much, but he knew that ravens didn’t talk.

Until the raven talked.

“Bird–” Matt blinked, taking a moment. Okay. Matt had seen enough to believe this. It was fine. The bird talked. “Right.” Should Matt introduce himself to… the bird? “My name is Matthew, too. Uh, just Matt, really.”

The two of them were so large and imposing now that Matt was trying to speak to them, his voice wavering. “I’ve never, um, spoken to a bird before.”

“ Hey hey, two Matthews. Matt, rather. Small world, huh? “

It’s unlikely that a raven could smile, but he did seem to crow in a manner following that implied laughter of some sort. Matthew pecked at his feathers a bit, grooming himself before turning his head towards his tall perch.

The lanky tree of a man brought his arm stretched out and his hand opened, most likely to shake it. 

The night and its mysterious lull towards the unknown wraps the narrow streets in a close embrace, with only the street lamps serving as any reminder to the light. It’s in this twilight that the real oddities of the town come out to play, or the truly unexpected and unlikely becomes that much closer to reality. 

The raven soars through the darkness, unseen and stealthy. He glides along the currents with ease and grace, the entirety of the district underneath his wings. People appear and vanish as they step through the light of the lamps, then back into the darkness. But something in particular caught the corvid’s attention, causing him to swoop down and rest atop one of the streetlamps.

Ah, the second day in this strange place, and Matt wasn’t dead yet. He was minding his own business, taking note of the people he saw. No one he knew. Well, that was good. Everyone was still safe, then. He barely even noticed the mass of black as he walked by, until he was certain someone had said his name.

“Can I-” Oh. This was a big… goth… man, with an intimidating looking bird. Matt had never seen someone who looked like that, not in all the galaxy. “… sorry. I thought you said ‘Matthew’?”

“ Yeah, we should really check this place out, boss. This ward’s all twisted like the Dreaming. Floor plan’s all wild, an-  “

The raven’s reconnaissance report was cut short as his master stopped moving through the throng of people. He tilted his head some, looking back at Dream.

The ‘big goth man’ looked down at the human who had garnered his attention, star-filled eyes glowing in his direction. Just a human, it seemed.
