These are the general writing principles I always do my best to keep in mind while writing my fics, and eventually the original stories I have planned.

Begin with The End:

When one starts at the beginning, the possibilities are endless, infinite. But when one knows the ending of the story, there can only be so many roads that lead there. For me, knowing the Ending helps me build my story’s structure better. The Ending is the guiding north star.

I’m the kind of person who basically does a bullet point list of all my plot points from the beginning to the end, so by the time I start writing drafts, I am just expanding on the bullet points I have.

The ending may change during the course of writing, because you may realize certain things need to happen, or not need to happen, and that’s okay. That’s a good thing. What matters is that you have an ending to start with, so don’t be afraid to refine it along with your other plot points as you go along.

Foundation of Brevity:

I don't mean in the sense that all my sentences need to be simple and straightforward, but that I myself understand the ideas I’m trying to communicate in the least amount of words possible. And if I know what I’m trying to communicate in the least amount of words possible, then I can definitely begin to communicate the full meaning in much more descriptive and/or subtle ways depending on what is needed for the scene.

Ex. She wanted to kiss her. (starting foundation)

Ex. She wanted to know what it would be like to press her lips against hers, to feel the warmth and softness from that point of contact, to finally let her true feelings be known.

This principle is closely aligned with:

Compression vs Expansion of Detail:

The detail itself can be the words within a sentence, full paragraphs, or entire scenes. Compression of detail makes a scene move faster, or it can also mean that the detail is not that important enough to be expanded upon. Expansion of detail makes a scene move slower, as if you are lingering upon it, savoring it, or it can be used to highlight the importance of a scene or thing.

Ex. She picked up the knife.

Ex. She grasped the wooden handle of the knife, feeling the heavy weight of it in her hand, the steel of the blade glinting in the light.

*Shorter stories compress their detail a lot, so it's interesting to see what is being lingered or focused upon. And the compression of detail also lets the readers' imagination to fill in the gaps.

Does it make sense…?:

This is usually the main question I'm asking myself when I'm writing. Does it make sense for this character to do this action, say this thing, behave in this way, react like this? Does it make sense for this event to have this outcome, for this action to lead to this consequence? Does it make sense for the plot to advance this way? Does it make sense for this story to have this ending in particular?

By this, I don't mean that all actions and words have one singular defined consequence or outcome. That would be too rigid and boring. What I must always ask myself and keep an eye on, is the logical progression of events stemming from a point of action. If it makes sense, then all is well, and I continue writing. If it doesn't make sense, then I know I have to go back before the point of action and figure what details are needed to show that the outcome I want to happen is actually the one that makes the most sense.

For example, if I want a enemy character to shoot a laser beam and have them miss the protagonist, I need to make sure the other parts of the scene support this outcome, like maybe having a bunch of enemies fighting and getting extremely close to the laser gun, and having one of them thrown into it, making the gun swing wildly into a different direction and missing the protagonist entirely. Asking myself, "Does it make sense?" while writing keeps my plots and characters consistent and coherent.

Chekhov’s Gun/Plot Significance:

Wikipedia states: "that every element in a story must be necessary and irrelevant elements should be removed. For example, if a writer features a gun in a story, there must be a reason for it, such as it being fired some time later in the plot. All elements must eventually come into play at some point in the story. Some authors, such as Hemingway, do not agree with this principle."

I realized with the more I write, I approach Chekhov's Gun more like Chekhov's Plot Significance. So when I introduce a plot element early in the story, the significance is not usually revealed until later in the story.

I feel like I am understanding Hemingway's view of inconsequential details more, because these inconsequential details, in my eyes, do help to make the world a bit more fleshed out in a way, to give it more life. So I feel I'm learning to linger just enough on actual plot significant elements, and to have inconsequential details to be shown briefly, to not linger on them for too long. Hemingway himself conceded that readers will inevitably seek symbolism and significance in all the details.

The Gordian Knot:

There's a probably a different name for this particular principle, but I call it the Gordian Knot principle because that makes sense to me. So basically, the Gordian Knot is an Ancient Greek legend in which there was a complex knot, and it was said that whoever could untie the knot would be destined to rule all of Asia. Alexander the Great approached the knot, and simply sliced through it with his sword, thereby undoing the knot, instead of trying to untie it as everyone expected.

So this principle is that when there is a problem in writing, the solution for it is, usually, very simple.

I realized as I write, it's usually enough for me to cut out certain words and sentences, and write in what actually supports the scene/character/plot. Sometimes, I have to cut out certain ideas, but that's okay too. It's part of the process of editing and refinement.

In the end, these are the general writing principles that have served me well so far. These are the principles I've condensed from reading a bunch of books on writing when I was seized by perfectionism and anxiety a few years ago. I have heard there are plenty of people who write from the middle of the story, people who start with descriptions first, and a whole bunch of different ways to write. The point is to find what works for you, run with it, and discover your authentic writing voice.

I am still learning (I think there's plenty I need to learn about descriptive writing) and striving to get better, and having fun with it. I'm not an expert, I just hope these general principles help in some way, even if this whole post just makes you realize "oh yeah, I don't prefer to do my writing like this" and points you in the direction you need/want to go in.

Great question!! So the answer is that Bela and MC would revert to the age they were when they accepted the job to help the Sustainers in the first place. I'm also playing around with the idea in my head that since they are technically dead and part of the afterlife, they can also change their ages as needed to suit whatever mission they're on (like turning into grannies or children to become less suspicious if they need to show their forms in public).

If one of them were to die first, before the other one, the one who passed on would technically just be waiting for their partner as well as training. And because of the nature of of the powers of Sustainers and the deal they made, the one who passed on can still technically visit the one who is still living (but not the rest of their family, like Sherry :'D ).

To me, I imagine when Bela or MC pass away, the other one is not too far behind. Or they could also pass away at old age at the same time in each other's arms at night peacefully. (aghh I always just want them to be happy, they've gone through so much)

Yeah!! That is a reference to MOA!MC's excuse of running after a little named Eva.

Would Miranda do the same things she did in RL if she were to lose ECR!MC? That is also a great question, and for that one, I would have to say you just gotta keep reading the fic as the chapters come out.
