Okay I'm on chapter 5
So to recap the Spindle family situation: Elspeth's mother, Iris, died of "the fever". Erik Spindle remarried to Nerium, and when Elspeth was 7 her two sisters, Nya and Dimia, were born. Elspeth also caught the fever, and was sent away to live with her mother's sister, Opal, her uncle (whose name I DON'T KNOW) and her cousins, Ione, Aldrich and Lyn: the house of Hawthorn.
Also the Nightmare lives in her head yeyy🖤
Ok so. Aunt Opal is NOT Iris' sister. They were just close. Also her uncle is named Erik? I think . Elspeth caught the fever and was sent to live with the Hawthorns at 9.
I just learned Nya and Dimia are blonde 😭 idk I imagined them n (younger) Nerium having black hair like Elspeth
I understand this is to reinforce the motif of her being the "black sheep" of the family but I think it would have been cool if they actually subverted that expectation. Especially if Nerium looked like a failed Elspeth, like, earlier in life. Whatever I accept the new info🙈

I hope there's more of the twins, Nya and Dimia. And their mother Nerium

One dark window - moodboard made by me.
Also printed these cards from Etsy, and created a hand cast, painted it black to display them.

Elspeth Spindle from The Shepherd King duology by Rachel Gillig
One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
Nerium, wife of Spindle.
Tbh I respect Nerium dissing the irises in their house like. If I was named after a flower but my husband insisted on putting out one based on his dead first wife, not ME, I'd be a bitch about it too... 👀
One Dark Window character lineup🥀 I am just finishing reading the second book and omg what a ride

Rachel Gillig was so right. More people should be named after trees.
“I’ll love you for a hundred years—and an eternity after.”
