Once Upon a Beer

Anchor Liberty Ale: Anchor brewery is heralded as the first craft beer in America. If your interested in the history, check out their website. But I thought this would be a great place to start. I bought a California Craft Pack from the local Jewel grocery store.

I was a little reluctant to try the Liberty Ale. However, I was pleasantly surprised. This has quickly become one of my favorite beers. I have looked for it in six packs and seen them at Binny’s.

I’m usually a fan of more bitter beers, but this one is a little more mellow and smooth. I read something that Liberty Ale is uncomplicated. I think that’s what I like about it. The flavor isn’t overwhelming, the feel in your mouth isn’t too heavy or light, has a good color and head, and I enjoyed the smell.

One question I came upon that I liked was “Does this give me pleasure?” I will be using this to help gauge my view. I really enjoyed this beer and will be drinking it again.

Years ago my sister and I took a road trip out to Yellowstone National Park and back. The one thing that stood out to me was the different beers we encountered in various places. From the jalapeno beer in Utah to the New Belgium Brewing Co brewery in Colorado. One day I had spent at an amusement park and my sister came back from running errands with a box of assorted beers. This was also at a time when Fat Tire was only available west of the Mississippi. Reminds me of stories my dad tells me about Coors back in the day. Now both are easily found at my local grocery store and the pub down the street.

At a trip to the Goodwill store I found this book. For only $1 I bought it and thought that it would be interesting to try and experience as many beers in the book as possible. With the book being 20 years old already, I figure there may be many not available. However, I think it could be fun to see where the book takes me. Worse comes to worse, I get to step out of my comfort zone and try some beers I’ve never had before.
