one of my favorite this american life segments of late is about the people who played orchestra pit for phantom of the opera on broadway and how, like, a sizeable majority of them had literally been playing the show since it opened in 1988 (on broadway. I know it opened in 86 on the west end, you random pedants, but I am specifically talking about broadway musicians) because their contracts stipulated that they'd have jobs throughout the show's entire run... but nobody anticipated that phantom would become the longest-running broadway show of all time.
and none of these people wanted to walk away from a guaranteed job, so very few of them ever quit. they just kept doing the same show eight nights a week... for twenty or thirty years... and by the time it finally closed last year most of these musicians (who had been working together for DECADES) hated each other and really really fucking loathed phantom. I can't stop thinking about it. it's indescribably hellish to imagine but also the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life.

weaver gave up a hit with one out that scored the free runner (streak ends at 25.1 because, while unearned, it's still a run). they walked ols*n after another out -- wisely, he was the winning run and had already gone yard twice -- but unintentionally lost another to load em; however, a ground ball to mauricio at short was enough, and they hung on to win 7-6.
wacky 9th innings the past two nights, as the mets somehow split the series with the br*ves.

speaking of old games though, this is one of my favorite screencaps. ever:
the removal of physical media is not the inevitable progression of improving tech, its like the removal of the 3.5mm jack: purely a result of profit physical games still account for about 1/5th of all sales of video games
but by only selling digital games sony can be the ultimate arbiter of their price. they can stop you lending games and force another sale instead. they can stop the sale of second hand games and keep prices artificially high. they can set any price they want and that will be your only option.

This is such a fantastic example what anticipation, overshooting, and settling actually *does* in animation, especially when you're new to learning it, be that 2d or 3d.
