Before the world knew her name, Yalitza Aparicio was a preschool teacher in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, with no formal acting experience and no plans of becoming a movie star.

Everything changed in 2018 when she auditioned for Alfonso Cuarón’s film Roma. Despite never acting before, Yalitza was cast as Cleo, a role inspired by the Indigenous domestic workers whose stories have often gone untold. Her powerful and authentic performance captivated audiences around the world.

Her breakout role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making her the first Indigenous Mexican woman ever nominated in that category. Overnight, she became one of the most recognizable faces in international cinema and a symbol of representation for millions.

That same year, Yalitza made history again by becoming the first Indigenous Mexican woman to appear on the cover of Vogue México. The cover featured the Mixtec phrase “In tiu’n ntav’i,” meaning “A star is born,” celebrating her roots and the culture she proudly represents.

Today, Yalitza continues to use her platform to promote Indigenous rights, education, and equality while representing Mexico on some of the world’s biggest stages. Her journey proves that talent, determination, and staying true to your roots can open doors that once seemed impossible.
