I wish I could properly articulate how personally hurtful it is when youโre disabled and you see people advocating for abortion for potentially disabled fetuses, or bragging about how down syndrome is being โeradicatedโ through abortion. Eugenics is not only becoming socially acceptable, but celebrated,ย when us who made it out still have to fight for basic accessibility even though itโs written into law. When disabled people are still largely unemployed or taken advantage of by employers. When we have to fight tooth and nail just to doย โnormalโ things like get onto an airplane. When weโre faced with trying to afford medical expenses, travel, or medication. When we canโt even get into buildings because of a single damn step in the doorway.
I wish yโall who want toย โshout your abortionsโ could feel that hurt, that weโre constantly shown it would better if we were dead and people think thatโs a good thing worth bragging about or celebrating.
Stop talking about how great it is that disbaled people arenโt being born because weโre choosing to just remove them from the equation if thatโs even a possibility. People become disabled through natural means later in their life all the time. People suffer all the time, and disability is not an automatic sentence for lifelong suffering anyway. You will never escape the โproblemโ of disability, no matter how hard you try. All you end up doing is alienating us and showing us how little you care for our lives.ย
We have a right to be disabled, and that shouldnโt even be something that has to be said.
