I am happy with my outcome of this project. However there is a lot I need to do to improve next project. I will take the feedback from this project and apply it to the upcoming projects.

For my final hand in pdf I had to take pictures of my book on a plain background and edit them to look better on the page. I then laid these out on the pdf with some annotations just to better explain some things. I had also written an evaluation where I explained:

What informed and motivated my design decisions? (e.g. the breadth of my research)

What changes and developments has my project gone through?

Did I manage my time well throughout the unit?

How did I respond to feedback?

Are there areas of my design process that need more practice?

What have I learnt from this unit of study? (e.g. skills, theoretical knowledge, etc)

On reflection, are there any improvements that I would make to my final outcome?

These points helped guide my evaluation. I also had to add my Tumblr link into it I was able to add it as a hyperlink thus allowing easy access to my Tumblr.

Photos of Book for Hand in

For the hand in of my work I had to take photos of my book, I created a makeshift background using two pieces of white A3 paper taped to a table and used my camera (Nikon D3500) to take the images.

To add variation to the images I took some close up images as it allowed a better understanding on how the bind would work.

After taking the images I brought them onto my laptop and used Adobe Photoshop to edit the images to look nicer, mainly changing the levels (CMD + L) to make it much brighter.

Development of Ideas within my Book

When designing my book I went through stages of development where my work would be changed in order to improve the visual interest of the layout also the flow of information and how the reader would intake that.

This went down to 4 big changes in the design that I believe enhanced the readability and interest of it.

The first was removing the contents page. Looking back at my book the contents page was quite unnecessary due to the contents of the book and the length of it. So removing it would allow more space for my introduction page to develop.

The introduction page was also changed. I moved the type around allowing more whitespace for the title. This changed the single page into a spread but its much easier to read now.

I then changed the size of the page numbers and removed the boldness of them as they stood out too much, they are only accessories to the page. Doing this left my design with a cleaner look and took away from the distraction of the page numbers.

The last main thing I changed was the back page. After printing I realised that it printed upside down. So I flipped the image. This was a simple change but I believe that it was necessary.

Transitions Week 8

I wanted to look into more covers of the newspapers I had to see if any similarities could be found within the design/information. I unfortunately couldn't get this done due to the time restraint set and my inability to find other covers and look into them in-depth in time.

I think doing this would have supported and solidified my research.

I have created the word clouds for my book using Adobe Illustrator. I had to write down every word seen on the 6 newspaper covers I had which took up a lot of time. I then sorted them and applied them to the page with varied sizes to highlight the most important text and see when I'm complete what sort of idea I get from it. 

Digital Development

To start my digital design / development I have planned out my layout on Adobe InDesign. I have also set up my file to my tastes and what I believe will work best for my book. 

Page Size - 304.8mm x 228.6mm

Margin - 10mm x 10mm x 15mm x 20mm

Bleed - 3mm x 3mm x 3mm x 3mm

Slug - 3mm x 3mm x 3mm x 3mm

Now I have the set up planned I can start thinking about applying my research into the design. The first thing that I will get done is my cover as then I will not have to return to that. 

Layout and Bind Test

Before designing my book layout on indesign I had to test a couple things. The first and most important being the bind. I wanted to take a look at how the paper would sit to make changes if it didn't work. I am pretty happy with the outcome of this bind I believe it works perfectly for my book I just need to think further about how to print. I also looked into the paper stock picking out a thicker paper for the front and back. If possible I do wish to move the bind to the other side.

Masthead - What it is 

A Masthead is a list at the top of a page that includes the names of editors, writers, and owners, as well as the title of the newspaper or magazine. You'll usually find the masthead on one of the first few pages. 

The Masthead is the identity for these news papers its the thing you recognise the most when going to purchase a newspaper.

I believe it is important to take a look at these as I wish to design my own masthead for my book cover design. So taking a look into it will allow me to understand the elements that goes into it. 

After exploring the point size of the type that had been set on a newspaper cover I believe its time to think about the point sizes that I will be using for my book design. This is important as I need to fit enough information whilst also keeping the design consistent throughout the design.

What I found looking through the covers is that the pt size of 8-9 is used often within the stories whilst the head lines are a little more inconsistent.

I think that the information that I place within my design should be set at the point size of 8-9 pt to relate it to my subject whilst keeping the type readable and sat well on my layout. 

For the title I want to be able to fill a page with it and so I will need to to be on the larger size up towards 300pt. I will need to check and compare before setting this.

Perfect Book Binding Workshop

On one of my days off I attended a perfect book binding workshop where I learned how to perfect bind. This was good as now I have the knowledge to do this type of book binding, I am also able to book the space now and go to work.

This will also be good for the future as eventually we will need to be making progress books. So having done this now I will not need to worry about it.

Layout Sketch

I have created a sketch with all the layouts that I wish to do within my book design. This was done to allow me to visualise and plan where my research and information will be placed in the book also able to plan an interesting layout that displays my research well.

I had to carefully select the information that I would put into my book selecting the most interesting things that I found within my primary research was very important. I also had to look into the research and the way I could guide the book with relevant information to create interest.

I spoke with Mark during my tutorial where he mentioned they do not have the tools to do the binding that I want done. So I was led to UNIPRINT the print shop within the university. I was able to find out that they can do the binding that I want done and I got a quote for it in order to understand the pricing for everything. 

The Binding itself will cost £4

I also got a chance to look into the different paper stock in order to find something that’ll work for my designs as the normal weight would be too light and easily breakable.
