So for context I’ve always been interested in soul gem placement for pmmm designs. Whenever a new pmmm design is released (like through magireco/magixedra) one of the first things I like to do is see where the artist placed the soul gem. Madoka’s and kyoko’s soul gems are on their chests, Mami’s soul gem is on her hair piece, homura’s soul gem is on the back of her hand, Sayaka’s soul gem is on her belly, and nagisa’s soul gem is on her belt.
I don’t see their soul gems anywhere. And it’s not like the rest of the characters are like this, we can see with the holy quintet that they still have their soul gems. For example, Madoka’s new design.
Her soul gem is still on her chest. However in the trailers I noticed that the soul gem pattern on their finger nails, instead of being green and orange respectively like they’d probably be if they were normal magical girls, they were both black.
The only other character who this odd black soul gem pattern is presumably one of the fake Homura’s. Fakemura’s is you will (or maybe falsemura’s? There’s gotta be a better nickname.)
And while I don’t have a screenshot for it I’m remembering correctly fakemura’s soul gem ring was designed with a weird fake cut out, either hiding her soul gem or her witch runes. And curiously her soul gem doesn’t actually look all that similar to homura’s even though she looks like homura in appearance. Considering that she also has the same black collar on her uniform as selma and choka shi / zi ding xiang do, if their soul gem rings are the same as fakemura’s is, that would mean it’s perhaps cutting out the witch runes part of the ring. Are all soul gem rings in homura’s new world like this? Or is this a key that these three aren’t actually magical girls? They also all have white pupils.
And if the patterns on selma and choka shi / zi ding xiang are meant to be believed then those would be shapes of their soul gems. And we don’t see those shapes anywhere on their designs.
