What I especially love about Jane and Lisbon’s relationship in S7 is the fact that they remain true to themselves, their knowledge about each other and their friendship. And also the fact that their home is really where their heart is, they move in with each other smoothly, never needing too much, as long as it’s with each other. They develop attachment to the things the other loves, look at them in a different light (like Lisbon at the “silver bucket”), and learn about each other’s dreams that used to be kept in a secluded place of their minds. Together they give special meaning to things others would pass by, constructing a new space that’s only theirs, a home. They develop their secret language to tell each other about their love, and when they use it, it’s full of symbolism for them both, it evokes memories, and they take special pleasure in using it and watching each other decipher it, deducing its secret meaning, like that of the swan.

Lisbon said those words but they both have experienced all-consuming fear in situations where they’d give their life without thinking for the one they love and maybe promised themselves to try and prevent such things from happening again, to keep the other out of harm’s way. And it’s an issue that’s still there, that can’t be left unnoticed or avoided. They’ve both been there, in circumstances that threatened to be more powerful than them, and they both understand there are things that can’t be counted or controlled. I wish we’d seen how they worked it out.  

Lisbon undoubtedly knew the answer to the question Jane implied back then. And Jane must have hoped it was something in him that flipped her switch, even if he knew she’d most probably never tell him. It was such a personal comment, revealing Jane’s thoughts more than he was used to showing. And they both were oppressed by the understanding of how impossible whatever they imagined about being together was. And it’s so good to see how their getting together is making up for every moment like this, when they were left with nothing but guessing about what the other felt, how they open up more and more and how they get to know each other’s switches.

It’s beautiful to think how Lisbon’s love gave Jane his real self back, and even more – it let him discover more of himself that he thought he had, the strength that she always believed in was really there in him, just like his love for life she never ceased to remind him about, whose driving force was not the desire of revenge but the desire to get his life back, to be able to become the master of it again, to have the final say in what comes next, to be able to breathe freely, to think of what he really needs, of how wonderful it is to welcome every new day and think that he has a purpose which is not catching RJ. Seeing her around every day, her ability to fight for what she thinks is right, having her support and humaneness was so life-asserting that it made him want to be with her longer than work and more personally than friendship would allow. It woke up his dreams, his desire to think of his future, turned on the mechanism that didn’t want or wasn’t expected to work again. And while she felt hurt and pushed away on so many occasions, her faith in him, in the good in him was stronger, just like the need in him he saw in her that kept him going.

“He [Pike] was just waiting there, all the time? I guess the Art Department guys aren’t that busy.”

Lisbon: “Ele está muito ocupado. Ele apenas faz questão de estar lá para mim.”
