my theory is that keefe will die.
just hear me out!!
for a while now, i’ve predicted that keefe will die somewhere near the end of the series. this is an ongoing theory, and i don’t yet have any concrete evidence - it’s more of just a hunch based on how keefe is written and what happens to his character throughout the story.
here are just a few reasons why i think this might happen (keep in mind, these are just predictions and opinions, so no hate please):
- if you look up the word "legacy,“ almost every single definition mentions death in some way.
- shannon hasn’t killed off any main characters yet. this could be a buildup to keefe’s death.
- adding on to the previous bullet, it would also make the blow of his death a lot harder on the characters and, of course, us readers.
- throughout the series, as well as in his own short story, keefe repeatedly shows and admits the fact that he’s waiting for sophie to be “ready” for him. being team sokeefe, it kills me to say it, but what if keefe’s perpetual waiting and hanging back is another knife in the gut from shannon? imagine how much more painful keefe’s death would be if he continued waiting for sophie, but waited too long and it became too late.
- alden also told keefe to avoid sophie for fitz’s sake (don’t even get me started on that rant, i could go on for hours). it would be a somewhat interesting character development opportunity for alden to realize that he should have allowed keefe the happiness and guilt-free freedom of being with sophie, instead of taking that away from him.
- also, keefe would be one of the youngest, if not the youngest, elf to ever die - which would certainly bring some of alden’s views into perspective.
remember, this is all just my messy speculation! if i find or think of any more evidence, i’ll add onto this post. if anyone else finds/thinks of evidence as well, please do the same!!
Honestly, I think this could happen, but also if it did we’d probably have Sophie be single because:
Grief
The Sophitz thing happened in cannon and that was a trainwreck
Other than Keefe and Fitz there has been no build up with any other character and compared to the love triangle anything else is going to feel out of no where
And then we’d probably get Councillor Sophie which would be a really satisfying ending narratively since she started as an outsider.
And I do want to make sort of counter points:
Like you said: Shannon hasn’t killed off any major characters (no the Forkle thing doesn’t count. It was a cop out and quite frankly stupid) and honestly we’re eight books in and if she wanted to kill off a major character it should’ve been sooner.
We still have unresolved plot threads with him. It seems like we’re getting a Cassius redemption arc (which I hate, okay). And he and Sophie are probably going to have a slowburn until the end of the series.
Plus, we have the whole head and heart thing which everyone basically knows means that Sophie likes him in his heart. And if he died before that was resolved it would leave unresolved plot threads and be really unsatisfying.
I think a really good ending to his character arc would be him admitting his feelings to Sophie. (Something which I think will happen in Unlocked because we get his POV and that would be a really good way to finish his development)
But yeah. I highly doubt any of that was coherent.
if this happens i will burn all the books, cry for a months, and leave the fandom
anyone with me on storming shannon’s house if keefe gets killed off? no? just me? ok
