tattoos on Ásgarðr are slightly different to those on Earth in a few ways :
inking in the same form as humans is a painless experience ...
... but inscribing , through magic , is much more uncomfortable , as it penetrates the skin and is intended as a means to provide more than just aesthetic appeal ---- magical tattoos are enchantments . they can act as shields , as talismans , as a source of power and connection
they can also shift , albeit within certain boundaries of their shape , and change colour
most of the tattoos hold a cultural significance far , far deeper than those on Earth
clockwise from top - left :
i . norse runes for longevity , and vitality , on his lower forearms . Thor had both tattoos as a young man training to be a warrior , believing that these tattoos , with runes the allfather sacrificed so much to obtain , would grant him the power he so desired .
ii . yggdrasil , the world tree , across his right side ----------------- without a doubt his favourite tattoo , and definitely the most intricate . it starts from his right hip , and trails up his side , with the tips of branches and leaves ending at his shoulderblade . the detail in this tattoo is such that , as Thor requested , onlookers could spend hours studying and still find new pieces of the puzzle ; somewhat representative of yggdrasil itself , an ethereal , magical source of life that no - one could fully envision . in fact , some claim that the tattoo itself is bound by magic , and the world tree’s eternal strength , and therefore changes each time the person sees it .
iii . bands across the bottom of both legs . the reasoning behind this far less intellectual ; it was Thor’s first ever tattoo , and he had ankle bands because he heard that these tattoos hurt far more than the average ... and his friends dared him to get it , teasing his lack of strength if he backed out . it was certainly the most painful addition to his body , but Thor claims the ordeal was worth it . anything to prove a point .
iv . a prayer of protection along his spine . his most recent ( and final ) addition , obtained shortly after Odin’s death , before his coronation as the King of Ásgarðr . this was a magical addition ------------------ a long - standing tradition from one king to the next , inscribed on him by the Norn , Skuld , who represents the future of all living creatures . the prayer , in Norse runic symbols , goes as followed :
odin allfather , make me fast and accurate . let my blade strike true . make my arm swifter than any who would seek to destroy me . grant me victory over my foes and when my death comes , let the halls of valhalla ring with my name .
