Am I the only one not happy about Episode 4 of The Last of Us? Like, who the fuck goes “Oh you’re not infected… but I’m pregnant, let’s bone!” Like… WTF!??? That after Dina saying she was “straight” but actively flirting with Ellie? Not to mention Ellie didn’t bat an eye after and saying “I’m gonna be a dad!” All excited? Like someone please help me understand because I’m low key pissed.
@visualecho94 @ohcommandermycommander
Can I also point out that Dina did not say she was straight. What she said was “You’re gay, I’m not.”
It’s semantics but I think the creators were just nodding to her being bisexual with that dialogue. Not gay.
Thanks! You are right. Maybe it hit as her “straight”because of how they had her say Kat was “the other one.” And they kept emphasizing on her relationship with Jesse, and saying she was not sober when she kissed Ellie. Then saying she wasn’t that high. Or maybe it just trigger some sort of feelings about straight girl messing with the queer girl trope. (Even though we know that’s not Dina) But I think my biggest issue really is Ellie’s reaction to Dina’s pregnancy. Isn’t Ellie supposed to be bloodthirsty at this point? I’m going to reward from the beginning because I feel like I’m missing something and that’s why I’m so unhappy with it. Like I missed subtle context somehow.
So you assumed or interpreted something that was never actually intended but got mad about it anyway.
I see.
Well, Ellie is not really the same person in the TV show as the Ellie in the game. She thinks and feels things differently. She acts and reacts differently.
The writing and portrayal for her is completely different. That’s to be expected since the TV show is only adapted from the game and not a 1-1 recreation.
She’s not as bloodthirsty in the show as she is in the game but I think Dina is just as affected by it as she is.
Hence why she’s enabling and encouraging the revenge streak and being the mastermind behind the initiative.
And then obviously saying they’ll do this together.
Regardless whether she’s pregnant or not.
Yes, it’s a major difference from the game.
They’ve decided Dina shouldn’t be left out.
Again - that’s to be expected. It’s not the game and this character is far more important to the narrative in this.
As for the awkwardness with the dialogue and the actions. First of all… Ellie’s always crushed on Dina. Dina has literally just found out that Ellie’s immune to the Cordyceps and instead of processing what that actually means she’s done the impulsive thing and just jumped Ellie because her feelings have overwhelmed her as she’s been given proof that her and Ellie can actually be together without the fear of her turning Infected. She’s threw all caution to the wind because she’s also had feelings for her and doesn’t want to wait.
There’s nothing really that awkward about it from a writing point of view. These are hormonal teen girls - especially Dina since she’s pregnant - and they’re not really thinking “straight”. They just go for it because they’re overwhelmed, horny, scared out of their wits.
And just teenagers that are attracted to each other. 🙂
As for Ellie saying “I’m gonna be a dad” rather than being angry at Dina. Again - different characterization for Ellie in the TV show compared to Ellie in the game.
I think the main thing that is obvious is that they’re sharing the anger and the hatred in the TV show. They’re on the same page with the bloodthirst which means they will act as a team instead of have so much conflict and fight about trying to protect each other.
‘Cause it’s condescending and it’s not what love is.
Exactly why I asked for some outside perspective? It felt weird to ME. I understand that they have to or wanted to make changes. I’m not the only one having some feeling about this episode. I was expecting something else, and I understand that the show isn’t catering to me. They’ll make the show they want to make. I didn’t understand the choices they made and why. Again, they made the choices that made sense for them. I enjoyed the episode for the most part.
My interpretation of the scene would be different from someone else, so that is why I asked for other perspectives.
A lot of people are unhappy about what they’re doing in the TV show because they are so attached to the game.
The only criticism I’ve seen has revolved around that:
“It’s not like the game therefore I don’t like it.”
At least you have acknowledged that it’s not supposed to be like the game even if you do feel the same way.
Read some of my meta on the episodes.
That will provide you with an outside perspective as someone who didn’t so much like the what the game did with the relationship between EllieDina and why.
And therefore why I’m all for what the TV show is doing.
I’m not saying you have to agree. Just acknowledge it.
Because this is likely what the creators have intended.
💬 2 🔁 3 ❤️ 4 · My final thoughts on EP 4 of ‘The Last Of Us’ Season 2. I do think they’re making it similar to the game in terms of the s
I appreciate that! I loved the game but I LOVE the show too! I like that they’re changing things and adding new things. There was just something about that scene that didn’t sit well with me, and you’re most likely right that I’m comparing show Ellie and Dina too much to the game’s characters. In retrospect, thinking about how they showed Ellie with Gail should have screamed at me that this is an entirely different Ellie for the most part.
Right ‘cause Ellie in the game would have just got angry and walked off. She wouldn’t even entertain Gail at all.
She wouldn’t even make jokes. She’d just get defensive.
So yeah, very different characterizations and portrayals.
Some people have already said this but they’ve then accused Ramsey of not playing the character right.
But what they don’t understand is that this character is intentionally written and portrayed differently to suit the metrics of the TV show. Not the game. That’s it.
In the game - because it was primarily a vengeance story and how destructive a person can be because of that - Ellie needed to be ruthless. Abby needed to be ruthless. They needed to put aside everything else but their grief and hatred and anger and bloodthirst. That worked for the story that they wanted to get across and it was fantastic. It really hit you and made you reflect on the human condition and human behaviour. It was great… but that story is not the same story in the TV show. Nor should it be. They will do it very differently.
So I guess the question is, can you accept the TV show being its own thing, its own experience from the game?
I honestly think I can. I just have to keep reminding myself that this is different. While there are several emotions shown in the game, the show goes much further than the game in exploring these emotions. Like, in the game we don’t really know much about Dina except certain dialogues in the game, and even then, I missed a lot of those dialogues. In the show you’re not told, you’re shown… if you pay attention, and I seem to have very much not paid attention.
