(Dis)believer || Neal & Bridget
blythewonder:
Somehow, she’d been the one selected from the Scribes to go and check in with the local police about the weeks-past bake sale mishap.
Why they had chosen to select her was more than a bit beyond her comprehension, but Bridget was never one to turn down a chance to prove her worth to her coworkers. Even though the police department was not her most trusted group of individuals in the town - but they did do well, for the most part. Even if a great number of them were ignorant, and even if some of them thought that the existence of the Scribes was useless.
Gaining more information about the police department was hardly a bad thing - Bridget only knew a bit from what Cece had causally mentioned, and if she remembered correctly, Cece, while part of the police in Ashkent, wasn’t an officer in the typical sense. Bridget had read enough Nancy Drew books in her childhood to have at least a vague interest in some aspects of the job, even though she’d never actually wanted to be a proper officer.
She had to dress extra nice - or at least extra professionally. Had to make a good impression, because this meeting could mean more than it might have seemed on the surface. She might have not been on the best of terms with any number of her coworkers, but that didn’t mean that she wanted to bring any distrust or lack of respect to the Scribe organization.
So she’d decided on a blue dress and faux-leather jacket, pulling on tights and her nicest pair of boots (ones that went up to just below her knees) and a purse, no extra pens or notebooks or anything. Deirdre’s necklace because it had been given to her with the very message of triumphing, and though going to the police station to discuss a pastry mishap was hardly anything when compared with an awful pageant, the comfort that the necklace provided was still incredibly important to her. Veronica’s birthday necklace to her was shorter, and she quickly added that on, letting it hit just on her collar bone.
While driving was still hardly something she enjoyed doing, and was not technically needed to go from the HQ to the station, Deirdre’s car would go to waste if she didn’t use it sometimes, and it would get her there faster than walking would, and it hardly seemed proper etiquette to show up on a bicycle. So she drove over to the station and parked just about a block away, exiting and locking the car. With a final adjustment of her jacket she turned on her heels and made her way into the building, greeting a member of the desk staff.
“I’m Bridget, from the Scribes - I’m here to meet with a member of the department about the bake sale, see if we can offer any extra insights.” She tucked a loose curl behind her ear and gave her best smile.
The individual in front of her gave a brief nod, before responding - “You’ll be meeting with our Captain today, he had some free time - just wait right over there and we’ll get him.” Bridget gave another nod, letting her fingers find the necklace and give it a brief twirl before letting go, going to go and sit on one of the chairs, making note of others who seemed to be waiting as well, though she refrained from making too much eye contact beyond a brief connection, followed by a small smile.
She wished that she’d brought a book with her, but that wish quickly disappeared when she heard some footsteps and stood up - perhaps too quickly - and noticed a man approaching. “Are you the Captain? I’m Bridget - Bridget Blythe, if that kinda introduction is important.” She stuck out her hand for him to shake. “I’ve been told we’re going to meet today. I’m from the Scribes.”
Meeting with members of old historical societies was not usually a task that fell onto Captain Maynard’s agenda. However, with the flood of calls and reports following the now infamous bake sale debacle, Neal felt it was important to make time for those who wanted to come forward and help. He wouldn’t admit that taking on more meetings would assure him that the new hire paperwork and budgets would be waiting for him, a promise to himself that he would not be leaving the station until well after midnight. To anyone else, a stack of papers would seem like a dark cloud looming over their entire day, but to Neal, it was almost reassuring.
The Captain looked up from the file currently splayed across his desk to check the time. Ten minutes to two. He began shuffling the papers back into a cohesive pile, organizing each leaf and placing a variety of colored sticky notes on various pages to remind him where he left off. Most of the other officers in Ashkent gave him a fair amount of shit for his organization practices, but they clearly never had to find something in a hurry. Or they didn’t prioritize the prompt rediscovery of pertinent information the same way he did. Neal shrugged at the thought and placed the file back in it’s place before straightening his tie and taking one last look across his office.
Every book, every file, every binder full of budgets, safety manuals, and personnel information was placed in a well manicured system. Neal smiled to himself, proud of his hard work. Sure, Boston had sent him here to get him out of their hair, not that they’d admit as much, but he was making the most of it. Though he didn’t get out into the field as much as he used to, being overwhelmed in administrative tasks wasn’t something he really minded. He was able to make certain that his department was up to snuff, and he even got to train most of their new hires. It was almost like having a family. Almost.
“Cap, we have a woman here for you. Said she’s from the Scribes.”
Neal was shaken out of his thoughts and pressed the speaker button on his phone. “I’ll be right out, thanks Johnson.”
Scribes. He rolled his eyes. There were some officers who said they were a fanatical group who studied all manner of fairy tales. Others said they were the group their old grannies used to meet with when they wanted their family histories recorded, just in case someone needed to know their life secrets. Secrets like their world famous jam, Neal would say. Sometimes he was met with a raised eyebrow and a side eye. That was the usual reaction from the superstitious ones, men and women who would swear up and down that ghosts were real and the Scribes had helped them understand why their Uncle Jerry was always seen wailing through their hallways on the Fourth of July when he’d died 5 years ago. Neal always scoffed at these stories, chalking them up to old family legends and superstitions. It was common in historical areas for people to believe in such things, but it was beyond him that people who dedicated their lives to law and order could possibly be among those that did.
Neal threw on his blazer and walked out through the station, heading towards a bright red haired young woman.
“I’m Bridget - Bridget Blythe, if that kinda introduction is important.”
Neal extended his hand and a warm smile. “Pleasure to meet you, Ms. Blythe. Thanks so much for coming in. I’m Captain Maynard. If you’ll just follow me, we’ll be talking in my office today.” Neal gestured toward the back of the station and began leading the woman into his office and closing the door behind them. “Now, you said you may know something about what happened at the Bake Sale? Were you there?”

I am finding it very difficult on how to answer my children (after Eoin found my old service pictures) if I ‘hurt’ anyone before while in the military and why I decided to go the route of librarian rather than police officer.
Eoin is very disappointed in me apparently because I’m not a cop. Does anyone have any advice?
I am taking another teachers advice and perhaps joining this Neighborhood Watch. Maybe that will reroute all questions from my children.
I don’t know much about how to deal with kids, but I think the best route is to be honest. Being a cop isn’t for everyone, and I’ve seen it take a lot out of officers with families to come home to. Trust me.
Being a librarian is not any less noble than being a police officer. I’m sure he’ll understand that one day.
As for the Watch program, I highly recommend it, especially if you have a military background. I doubt most of the volunteers know anything about real safety measures. Your experience may come in handy.
djerinyes:
Of course not. I wouldn’t tell you how to do your job. You’re the Don’t call me kid.
Please do. You have a very competent force, more so under your direction, but it’s a high stress job, and sometimes people need someone to listen, or some direction. There are also things your team might not be comfortable coming to you with.
I still feel like you’re being sar-
I agree. Do you have a card? I’ll put it up in the station if anyone needs you.
cassidydanvers:
That was probably a rare moment of optimism there. Good point. Somebody has to know something.
Can’t hurt anyway, least it’ll make any other copycats out there think twice about trying this kind of stuff.
There’s nothing wrong with a bit of optimism, especially around here. No one ever seems to have any.
Exactly. The ACPD takes these things very seriously.

I actually…hadn’t thought of It’s so ordina All easily contributing factors that could also easily be addressed by the council. Lifeguards, swimming and water safety lessons…
[pm] They probably know that something wicked this way comes, can’t really blame them with how the public is reacting and what generally happens to our own when they go investigating solo or in pairs. I’m still very down though for a field trip, count me in.
I think it’s also a point to be brought up at the next Neighborhood Watch meeting. Maybe some of them would be interested in volunteering.
[pm] They are this town’s first defense against incidents like this. They should take this job seriously. I wouldn’t recommend anyone going out alone. There’s brave, and then there’s stupid.
Perfect. I’ve just got a few more things to take care of here, year end budgets are a real pain in the ass, so swing by my office when you’re ready to head over.
Thanks again, Han.
iggythepyro:
I ended up going to a friend’s place actually. It was better than I was expecting for my first one alone.
Oh, that’s good.
Well, if you ever find yourself looking for some grub on turkey day, uh, Boston Market’s the way to go.
reedhan:
Would anyone happen to know why Dark Score lake has such a high number of fatalities? Is it due to its location and the history surrounding it? How high is the supernatural activity in that area compared to other parts of town, like the Bend?
And regarding the recent incident that occurred last Friday, I personally advise avoiding the lake altogether until the investigation being conducted by the ACPD has been closed or solved. Although if someone wants to go with me
I may just go
As far as I can tell, it’s simply because of the lack of supervision. There are no lifeguards on duty, it’s in a less than well travelled area, and people who don’t know they’re own weaknesses decide to go out and test their limits without proper emergency plans in place.
[pm] Speaking of the investigation, I was thinking about heading down there after work. It seems we have a department full of less than enthusiastic officers who’d rather eat more leftovers than address fatalities in our town, but I was hoping you might be up for a little field trip.
djerinyes:
Oh, absolutely. There’s nothing more pressing in town for the captain of the police force to be worried about.
I’ll give that a hard pass. Law enforcement isn’t my calling, and I’m in the dark about the sabotage. But if you or anyone on the squad need to talk, I’m a grief counselor, and am more than happy to provide support that way. Police work can be traumatizing, can’t it.
Is that sarcasm, kid?
Yes, it has it’s dark moments, but my team is very well equipped to handle the job. I’ll put your name out there if any of my officers need your services.
hawaiianhalfwolf:
[pm] Great so you’re a non-believer. This will be a great statement. Alright. I’ll see if i can seek someone else out. Thank you for answering my questions.
[pm] Anytime. Please don’t hesitate to call if you remember anything of interest from the event.

[pm] You’re going to make me blush.
How are you handling the whole situation? From what I’ve heard about the case from the other officers it seems a little magic …. weird. Weird isn’t exactly your forte
[pm] It does seem to be following some unfamiliar patterns, but I’m sure we’ll get to the bottom of it. I bet it was a bad shipment of flour. I’ve read it can cause hallucinogenic side effects, and worse if it’s really bad.
cassidydanvers:
Or there isn’t one. Lucky. This town just keeps getting better and better. Hopefully this is a one-off.
Sure, any time.
Unfortunately, it never seems to be a one off. We’re going to be upping our patrols for events from now on, so hopefully that will help.

[pm] If i can be frank here, identity protection is more what I’m after, since my statement would involve the more supernaturally inclined among us. If you catch my drift.
[pm] Supernaturally inclined? Oh good God, not another one. You uh, you may want to speak to one of my officers about it, but I assure you, all identities in question will be protected, no matter what movie monster they think they are.

djerinyes:
Psychedelic episodes? How frightening.
The town could definitely use some security. I’m more than willing to lend a hand if it’s for the right cause if it pays well, but unfortunately I know nothing about such terrifying things. You need our help to do so How quaint Is there another way I can help the dear police out?
It’s certainly not something to be thrilled about.
We are it’s security. If you would like to join the force, you’re more than welcome to. If you know anything about the incident, or any incident for that matter, please file a report with one of our officers and help us to catch whoever is trying to sabotage simple community fundraisers.
adrien-babineaux:
What I wonder is whether this will discourage people from patrolling at night.
What do you think of this neighborhood watch ? In my opinion it should be forbidden but this country likes to act like it’s the land of freedom so.
I think it’s about time we had some citizens willing to step up. Why would it be forbidden? They’re trying to help their community.
