The Connecticut Irish community gathered together on this misty afternoon to bring attention to Quinnipiac University’s decision to close Ireland's Great Hunger Museum. Opened in 2012 under the stewardship of then-university-president John Lahey, the museum holds the world’s largest collection of Great Hunger-related art, artifacts and literature. Its future has been challenged since 2018 when Judy Olian succeeded Lahey as president. The collection is in danger of being split up and sold. Roscommon Castle was attacked and burned several times before its final build in the mid-to-late 13th century. Built in the style of contemporary royal castles at the time, this National Monument saw many occupations over the centuries. It was finally dismantled in 1652 after the Confederate Catholics surrendered to the Cromwellians. The passage tombs at the Carrowkeel cemetery in County Sligo were excavated in 1911 led by R.A.S. Macalister, the Irish archeologist who was also committed to the 1940’s cataloguing of all known Ogham stones in Ireland. The excavation revealed Neolithic Age remains and ruins dating back to the 4th century B.C.
