irving lane morrison was born and raised in mapleview. the morrison family has never had a good reputation in town despite a long history that began with his great - grandfather, who settled in the area shortly after getting married and spent the rest of his life working as a mica miner in the blue ridge mountains. he was killed in what is now one of the most notorious bar brawls in town history and since then, irving lane morrison the first has become the stuff of legend in mapleview, although most of the stories are now twisted and dramatized far beyond the point of plausibility let alone fact.
his parents met while his mother was attending college nearby. his father already had a child from a previous relationship ( lane’s paternal half sibling, who’s older by 10 + years. ) his mother moved in with her new boyfriend and his child shortly after their first meeting, and not too much longer after that she would give birth to the couple’s first and only child.
irving lane morrison was formally named after his notorious great - grandfather, but has always answered exclusively to his middle name as his mother never quite warmed up to irving. looking after their son would keep the new parents preoccupied for a few weeks, but the couple would soon develop a pattern of fighting, making up, and then fighting again. they were well - known around town for their tumultuous relationship, loud arguments and frequent visits to the local drunk tank becoming synonymous with the name morrison.
lane learned how to fend for himself at an early age. his mother left when he was still very young and his father tried his best to raise him for a few years afterward, but his worsening alcoholism often got in the way of his attempts at any kind of parenting. by the age of five, his older sibling who was just a teenager themselves at the time had taken over all parenting duties and became lane’s primary guardian & protector.
he never did particularly well in school, rarely bothering to show up and never really trying when he did. most teachers really just … didn’t care that much, but there was one who genuinely tried to help him in high school by assigning him a tutor : penelope abrams. they remained in contact even after he dropped out of school. fast forward to the present, and after almost six years of dating the couple is still going strong. they moved into a small house on chestnut drive together almost two years ago.
he left his home at around the same time that he dropped out of school, the two decisions leading to an argument between himself and his sibling that caused an ongoing estrangement. he would stay with friends or sleep in his van while working various little jobs around town. finding work was never very difficult for him ( even once he started getting fired for showing up to work completely stoned ). it was about a year ago that he started at strings & things and it’s his favorite job that he’s ever had, so he’s actively trying not to fuck it up even though he’s definitely shown up stoned on more than a few occasions.
lane has had a very unpredictable relationship with his father since leaving the house they once shared. however, lane often still finds himself checking up on the man, often dragging him out of the local bar long after he’s fallen unconscious and even quietly paying his bills sometimes. although his mother has never returned to mapleview, she’s called and sent letters and the occasional birthday gift over the years. after she left town, she finished college, started up a psychiatry practice, got married and had children with her husband. lane is always cordial with her, but he keeps her at a distance because the fact that she basically ditched him to go start a whole family kinda stings ! he tries not to think about it though.
* PERSONALITY / HEADCANONS.
“fuck it” - lane at least fifteen times a day, largely in regards to things he should most definitely not be saying fuck it about.
stoner, vegan, & environmentalist.
encyclopedic knowledge of classic rock. his mother’s records were one of the few things that she left behind and he’s spent half of his life listening to every single one over and over and over again. it’s easy to tell if he’s at his house because if he is, then there will be music seeping through the walls and beneath the crack in the door.
suuuuper into the helping the environment. the kind of person who scolds his friends for littering and stops what he’s doing to pick up random bits of trash in the street because he absolutely cannot bear to leave it there.
follows whims without a moment’s hesitation. ran out of mouthwash ? a sip of whiskey straight from the bottle will do just fine. his hair is getting too long ? he’ll just take out a pocket knife and chop off the pesky pieces. bored ? maybe he’ll throw a ball of tinfoil into his microwave just to see what’ll happen. self - preservation and impulse control ? doesn’t know them, they blocked him :/
surprisingly … really, really good at giving advice. he has *john mulaney vc* street smarts and just seems to get people. he’s a good mediator in arguments that he’s not involved in.
however, he’s horrendously unreliable. the absolute last person one should approach with anything that’s time - sensitive. he’ll promise to help and then get too high to follow through or honestly just forget altogether.
stubbornly independent. even though he tends to be generous towards others, when it’s him who’s on the receiving end he feels like it’s charity and automatically rejects the assistance. no matter who it is or how hard he’s struggling, he will tell just about anyone to back off !
feels like there’s just a picture of his face in the dictionary right where the definition for fuck up should be. he knows that he’s always been a fuck up and he’s always going to be a fuck up, but he doesn’t want to ever reach the point where he feels like he’s turned into his father and actively tries to be a different though truthfully not always better person.
has undiagnosed dyslexia which he isn’t really cognizant of, but anyone who knows him well is probably aware of it to some extent despite him never really discussing it.
there’s basically a 102 % chance that he’s very stoned at any given moment.

people he does housework for ( open for up to four muses ). lane does stuff like washing cars, mowing lawns, cleaning gutters, shoveling snow, and the occasional handyman job for some extra cash, so these would be people who have hired him to do such things for them on a regular basis.
his piano teacher. doesn’t have to be a professional, but this would obviously be a very musically - inclined muse. lane is currently learning how to play the piano with plans to learn guitar next, so this would be the person who is currently teaching him. ( whether it’s for free or for a fee is utp. ) be warned : his last piano teacher quit on him, which brings us to, sure enough ...

a friend of his mother who he would remember from childhood. lane’s mom left town when he was very young and hasn’t returned since so he doesn’t really remember her, but this person was a good friend of hers while she lived in mapleview about twenty years ago and has made a habit of checking on lane every once in a while for her sake. whether or not he would know that they do this because they knew his mother would be utp.
