quentin is certain that he will regret every word he has said to her since she arrived at his hotel, but his mind is clouded from the dominating emotions that blur his thoughts. shame, grief, frustration, sadness, it’s too difficult for him to tell which emotion outweighs the others. “i’m not leaving lucas again. i promised.” he straightens his slumped shoulders as he takes a moment to regain his composure. all his efforts to control his impulsiveness have gone out the window as he stares at the ring on the table again. “maybe, we weren’t just meant to be.” the comment causes an ache in his chest, not wanting to believe his own statement. “i don’t know—this marriage, is beyond fixing.” daring himself to look into her eyes briefly, quentin doesn’t shift his gaze off her when he looks away. “it’s my fault, i know. i just can’t put anymore false hope into this when we always end up the same exact way.”

emily stares at him, eyes still overflowing despite her best intentions to keep her composure. “so, that’s it?” what’s she even supposed to say? it’s bad enough he left in the first place, but he came back only to give up completely. it’s a relief he won’t leave lucas. the last thing she wants is for him to develop issues from quentin’s sudden and permanent absence. it sucks for her, though. despite her best intentions to think solely about lucas, emily can’t help but feel sorry for herself. “alright.” she swallows thickly as she nods. this is it. there’s not much she can do from here if quentin isn’t even willing to try anymore. emily’s always wanted to try. she’d try anything. before he left she tried to spice up their love life, surprise him with big meals. at one point, when the fighting was too much, she suggest couples counseling. “you know, quentin,.” she begins, voice wavering slightly, “it’s really hard to believe you love me when you consistently give up on us.” quentin was never willing to put much work into their relationship, it seems. when she got pregnant, he gave her a ring. emily supposes that’s where his efforts stopped. “thank you for meeting with me. i think i’ve figured out everything i needed to.”
