There's musicianship, then there's proficiency to the point of frustration â the thought that you will never be as good at anything as Screaming Females' Marissa Paternoster is at playing her guitar. The New Brunswick garage-punk favorites' leading wailer all but burned Convention Hall to the ground with her frenzied solos Friday, her tiny hands whirling around the frets. Most breaks were welcomed by a deep, quivering scream, that beckoned both Patti Smith or Edith Piaf, and as the trio plowed through tunes off their 2015 LP "Rose Mountain" it was obvious â after 10 hours in a cold, cavernous venue, the headliner and Don Giovanni darling was entirely worth the wait.

The Jersey punks demonstrate the destructive capabilities of a well-placed fuzz, a spasmodic riff, and vocal lines perennially set to âstun.â

Firstly, thank you to everyone for your support thus far. I have acquired a sample and can confirm that Target has cheaply replicated my Weird Empire original in design, scale, color, and format. It is shocking to see them side by side. In observation of these facts I will be issuing a cease and desist letter to their corporate headquarters and a few selected department heads, that states that they are in violation of my intellectual property and have no claim to produce, sell, or copyright this design.
Please help me fight this battle by sharing this image, purchasing original products from www.weirdempire.com, or helping document instances in which this unsanctioned product is for sale at Target stores.
Again, thanks to my hive, love to you all.

Our best band friend and loyal roadie Rebecca Henderson has had one of her Weird Empire designs outright stolen by the lazy, ignorant, capitalist trash bozos over at Target. Â Unfortunately, Rebecca is one independent artist amongst many who have had their intellectual property heisted by a faceless, corporate entity.

The best way to help Rebecca and the other artists who have been swindled is to buy some of their wares, reblog, repost, etc. Â
Then, Screaming Females. Their set started fast, with little introduction, and only got faster. A decade of playing together has trimmed anything resembling fat off the trioâs set: the band were all sinew and bone. Even their moments of relative calm had a potency that could put a death metal band mid-riff to shame, and the hushed first half of âHopelessâ was so shocking that some members of the crowd let out loud, involuntarily peals of nervous laughter. It was artful disassembly, and guitarist and vocalist Marissa Paternoster picked apart songs and riffs with a singular skill and precision. Nobody plays guitar like Paternoster. Iâm not even convinced she actually plays it â the word âplayâ implies a talent that can be learnt, but I donât think even hours of practice could have someone doing what Paternoster does to an instrument, or to a crowd. The set didnât finish as much as it snapped clean off. By the time it was all done, Paternoster was lying on the ground, screaming into the mic. A normal crowd would have pulled back â they were very close to Paternoster, standing over her, breaking the boundaries of the stage. But by that point they werenât a normal crowd. They didnât pull back. Instead they quietly moved forward and huddled around Paternoster, hands cupping around a flame, as one final, hoarse scream rang out.

New Jersey's Screaming Females have finally made it to Australia, and the Sydney crowd that greeted them was rapt. At times it was hard to even see the stage through the masses of people, eagerly trying to see how the band's incredible sound was being created. Screaming Females specialise in giant hooks and world-conquering vocals, which soon evolve into transcendent guitar jams. By about three songs into the set, it felt like they were going to tear the roof off the place. Criminal Image led to one such dazzling jam-out that lasted several minutes. The crowd were whipped into a frenzy as the guitars swirled in grimy crescendo, limbs and instruments flying across the stage. Helpless began softly with sustained clean guitar, highlighting singer/guitarist Marissa Paternoster's distinctive vocals, while gradually chugging along and building into its iconic chorus.
Paternoster, ending the set with Boyfriend, stage-dived into the crowd, with her guitar, microphone and stand passed along with her. Her instrument rang out and fed back as she screamed its closing lyric, "While you sit on the fence, I will burn in hell."
