Looming above the coast, the brooding mountains of the northeast are another world entirely. The karst connection continues into Cao Bang province, the surreal scenery some of the most stunning in all Vietnam. The Mystical Mountains Of Northern Vietnam

The far northern reaches of Vietnam are quite different from the rest of the country and expose a landscape of limestone pinnacles, granite outcrops and rice fields clinging to mountain verges creating spectacular sceneries. The slower pace of life in this region is a necessity to overcome the hard terrain, with hill tribes working hard to provide for daily needs. This adventurous program introduces travelers to local customs and meets with a number of hill tribes in their villages as you trek through the mountainous landscape.

Looming mist covered mountains characterize the region and provide endless opportunities for spectacular photos. From your starting point of Hanoi you will see a change of landscape as your guide drives towards the Chinese border. On reaching your first stop of Tuyen Quang, you will notice the cooler temperatures and have the chance to dine in a local restaurant. After a night at the Pan Hou Lodge, you will undertake a 16km trek to the local hill tribe village of Phin Ho, known in the area for its special herbal teas which are grown from local medicinal herbs. On the second night your accommodation is a homestay at Phin Ho where life remains simple and untouched by the modern influence of the outside world. The locals are friendly and welcoming, allowing a chance for travelers to better understand their practices and learn about life in the region.

First up, how much time do you need to explore the area? Johnny reckons a week is a good time to go for, “as there are lots of side roads down to villages that you can explore in this time.” While three days is enough time to get up to Dong Van, it will primarily be riding on the main roads, he says.

On a three-day trip, you can expect to spend one or two nights in Dong Van, travel along the border with China and visit Meo Vac, Johnny says. Though a shorter trip, friends who have been say it’s still amazing, mainly thanks to the fantastic scenery. If you go for longer, however, you’ll have more of an opportunity to explore the backroads and ethnic minority villages, which would enhance the trip.

The Northeast (Đông Bắc) is the region at the north of the Red River Delta, Vietnam. Northeast called to distinguish them from the Northwest, but it's actually in the north and northeast of Hanoi, wider than Việt Bắc. The northeast is one of three sub-regions of northern Vietnam (2 other sub-region is the Northwest and the Red River Delta). Sometimes the Northeast, including the Red River Delta.

For most visitors, the northeast is all about Halong Bay. The sublime seascape at this World Heritage site is undoubtedly one of Vietnam’s most enchanting experiences. But high up in the rugged mountains of the interior are some of the country’s most intriguing destinations and far fewer tourists than in the coastal clusters.
