excuse me but why the fuck is this why can we not know which of these two specific days in the seventh month of the year, in one of one hundred different possible seventh months of the year, is the actual day of the seventh month of the year in question???
one thing I like about my brain is how if i'm interested in or thinking about multiple subjects at once, I inevitably end up synthesizing them all into a new idea even if it doesn't immediately make sense to put them together
I'm thinking about this backrooms vid and also thinking about lawns, American urban planning, and Minecraft.
My preferred take on the Backrooms is that it's a compelling concept when (and because) the place itself is the monster. The core of the idea's interest, to me, is imagining a (seemingly) "man-made" environment that is indifferent and arbitrary in the same way a geological formation or a cave system is indifferent and arbitrary.
This place looks like a building, but there is no trace of purpose behind its structure and composition. This place isn't designed to be used or lived in by humans. It's not for people. It's not for anything. It inevitably doesn't provide for human needs or accommodate human life, and that's why the Backrooms is scary—it's as purposeless and "un-designed" as a wilderness, but the lifeless nature of such man-made structures makes it desolate and deadly.
It is a lot similar to the way the procedural generation of structures in Minecraft often creates buildings that seem bizarre and useless in their layout.
"Almost unmistakably man-made object or place with elements of illogic and randomness that increasingly rule out the possibility that actual humans built it on purpose" is a great concept in horror.
I think it is linked to a real characteristic of many (particularly American) man-made places. The contemporary world is increasingly full of places that are not "for" humans or human needs. A building communicates messages to us. A building has a purpose; it is used to fulfill a human need in some way. The design of a building reflects what it is "for." Architecture can, like anything, be a form of art that is more aesthetic than practical, but this is still a purpose.
And as we are surrounded by structures whose purpose is more and more abstract and disconnected from the needs of humans—commercial buildings that exist to generate profits, vast parking lots that exist to hold cars, concrete courtyards that exist to take up space, lawns that exist to make a house look well-maintained, dead malls that are being maintained despite the absence of usefulness and relevance—the idea of the Backrooms becomes more resonant.
The ultimate example of this is "hostile" anti-homeless architecture in cities. These structures make it clear that a place is not for humans.
"Purposeless structures" in horror, apart from being deliciously uncanny, highlight the way contemporary landscapes are designed to separate us from the things we need for our survival, not to provide those things—and at best aren't designed with meeting human needs in mind at all.
really latching onto the first four paragraphs more than anything, but my takeaway is this: megalodons are to sharks what the backrooms are to mimics
dude who’s an SCP solely because he’s so normal nothing anomalous works on him. scp 173 doesn’t move whether or not he’s looking at it because “that’s just a statue, dude, what do you mean it killed eight people it can’t even MOVE”. hes put in 682′s chamber and it tries to bite him but just. completely fails to injure him in any way. meanwhile he’s like “aw neat monster animatronic”. if you hit him normally with a normal bus he will die but if an scp is driving the bus he will not

What do you think would happen if the scp foundation found a portal to marvel 616 (comics)
I don't have the energy to respond to this from a worldbuilding perspective; one of these settings is an uncoordinated mishmash of barely-mutually-canon cool ideas thrown together by thousands of writers and fans viewing the same basic ideatic kernels through their respective lenses, and the other is the SCP Foundation.
From a Vibes perspective.... If the crossover were written from the Marvel side of things, structurally it would lend itself to an Exiles plot or a Champions plot (Khan and Morales, not Herc and Ghost Rider.) A one-off glimpse into the mirror darkly, a brief foray into a grim universe in which superheroism was ruthlessly suppressed by the men in black, the joy and wonder of the genre strangled in it's crib. Something in the vein of Ruins by Warren Ellis. The Champions in particular would be good for this because their whole thing is voice-of-the-youth opposition to Authoritarianism and The Man without having the unilateral firepower or social cachet necessary to decisively overthrow the system....yet. This lets you make whatever critique you want to before having them fuck back off to their home dimension, leaving the alternate setting intact for future overuse to the point of being run into the ground Thought Provoking Crossovers.
If the crossover were being written from the SCP side of things (This was a thing for a while, there was a Project Crossover series where people would write SCP crossover fanfic on the main site) The vibes would be significantly different. It would be a story about the SCP foundation stumbling across an Apollyon-class anomaly; A dimension in the clutches of an ongoing metaphysical mutilation of reality to accommodate the endless consequence-free devil-may-care fuckery of a handful of yahoos in tights, at the expense of the 7-billion-and-change people who ontologically Do Not Matter. You'd get some commentary on a world that, for all its focus on justice, freedom and the tenacity of the human spirit, will never be able to escape the gravitational well of the heroes and their soap-opera lives. A good foil for the Foundation, who, despite their ostensible focus on scientific progress and understanding, are also rendered structurally incapable of consistent forward progress by virtue of the medium; after all, mainlist articles that depict the Foundation as having made a significant positive impact are given a lot of their punch by their contrast with the trapped-in-amber status quo depicted in most of the other mainlist articles.
