Octonic VR

First treadmills, now STATIONARY BIKES! We are excited to announce that with the release of 4.0 this Thursday, November 23rd, Octonic will support stationary bikes. Just like our treadmill option, our bike option wirelessly connects the Quest 2, 3, and Pro with bluetooth enabled FTMS bikes, allowing users to bike through our library of worlds. The speed of the world will synchronize with the speed at which you pedal, allowing for seamless and safe riding. In addition, you’ll be able to control the resistance completely within virtual reality and push yourself to your physical limits.

Also new in this update is a revamped UI/UX that significantly simplifies the wireless connection process to both treadmills and stationary bikes. Now, you’ll be able to connect your headset with your fitness machine within seconds (just like you would connect your phone) and enjoy our fitness worlds with less friction.

Following our participation in AWE show in Vienna in October, this week on November 2nd and 3nd, Octonic is honored to join our fitness equipment partner Woodway this week at the Athletic Business Show in Baltimore, MD to bring VR treadmill exercising to all attending the show. 

AB Show is an event for professionals in the athletics, fitness, recreation and military fields. It offers educational sessions, an expo hall with 250+ exhibitors, and networking opportunities. The event aims to help attendees find solutions to manage successful programs and facilities.

The Octonic team will be demoing the latest addition to their fitness app, allowing users to explore virtual worlds while working out with a fitness treadmill.

With the Apple Vision Pro set to come out in early 2024, our team is at work to make sure that Octonic is ready at release. Over the course of the summer, we’ve made amazing progress in developing the app, according to Apple’s specifications. This involves giving users the freedom to view into our virtual worlds through windows in the real world, allowing them to adjust the size of the window according to their preferences. In this way, users will be connected with both the real and virtual worlds as they exercise.

We are excited to announce that Octonic has been accepted to PICO Lab and is now available to anyone with a PICO 4 headset. Our team conducted in-depth tests over the summer to optimally port and build the product for the PICO’s ecosystem before submitting the app for review with ByteDance. Now, anyone with a PICO 4 headset can find and download Octonic by searching for us in their library.

Users will have the exact same features, running worlds, and functionality as they have with our Quest version, with the additional benefit of having a smaller design, due to PICO 4’s pancake lenses, as well as a lighter weight. As a result, users can have an even more comfortable exercise experience as they get in shape.

Our team is focused on expanding distribution of Octonic across the world, and availability in PICO’s ecosystem is a critical move in this endeavor. Currently, PICO 4s are available in Asia and Europe, which will allow us to grow our footprint in those regions. And we hope to do the same in North America once ByteDance releases the headset here. 

Looking forward, we are planning to make Octonic available across all major platforms. Both the Apple Vision Pro and HTC Vive XR Elite are next in line for us, but we expect numerous additional entrants to come to market in the coming years. Soon, you won’t need a headset to observe VR exercising with Octonic. Our development team has been working on a screen mirroring mode that allows users to spectate other runners in VR on external devices like mobile phones and TV screens. This will allow others to watch your workouts and competitions, without needing to be in VR. We are getting this feature ready for use in gyms, so races can be observed by other gym goers, but you’ll be able to use clips from your workouts for streaming and on social media as well. In the end, your exercise routine will be a shareable experience with anyone, even if they don’t have access to a VR headset. Check out a clip of what we’re working on below.

We have been fortunate to receive a growing amount of media coverage for our work across numerous publications, including VRScout and Mixed Reality News, but we’ve often found that the best way to convey our passion for what we do has been through our podcast interviews. This year, some of our core team members had the good fortune of being invited to podcasts, including VR Fitness Insider, hosted by Preston Lewis and Ryan DeLuca, and XR Magazine, hosted by Diana Olynick. We greatly enjoyed discussing our backgrounds, our stories of how we met, and our outlooks on the future of XR, among other topics.

Octonic currently wirelessly connects with 40 treadmill brands, allowing users to adjust treadmill controls, including start/stop and speed, from within VR, but we are not stopping there. During the last week of July, some of our core team members embarked on a Midwest roadshow to meet with numerous treadmill manufacturers at their headquarters, with the goal of finalizing partnerships for Octonic’s integration into their product ecosystems. We had extremely productive meetings with company leaders at all our visits, which included facilitating product demos to show how our app would work with their treadmill products. Moving forward, we have a number of deliverables for each manufacturer we met with, and hope to finalize agreements in the near future.

Partnerships are just one piece of the puzzle for our company’s growth, which will also require scaling up our development team to keep innovating, in addition to augmenting our marketing effort to ensure that more potential customers know about us. We are excited to launch our new running world – Emerald Trail. Like our other recently-released worlds, we developed this world using our proprietary world-building method that maximizes the graphical capabilities of Meta’s Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets. 

When you run with Octonic, you will always have peace of mind during your workouts, thanks to our proprietary safety system, which includes a focus on positional awareness through use of an avatar that shows your position on the treadmill.

While running, you’ll be able to see a small avatar running concurrently with you, showing your precise position in relation to the center of the treadmill belt. When you veer off path, the avatar will give you a visual cue that you’re off center. Additionally, you’ll hear audio warnings to steer yourself back. 

Octonic is currently available on Meta’s Quest 2 and Quest Pro, but we are actively building the app for all popular mobile VR platforms, including the Pico 4, which is currently only available in Asia and Europe, with plans to launch in North America soon. With its lighter weight and use of thinner pancake lenses, the Pico 4 offers numerous conveniences for users of our app. In addition, offering our app on Pico’s platform will allow us to signficantly grow our base of users, especially in Asia and Europe.
