Edward Hardwicke as Captain Pat Grant and Christopher Neame as Lieutenant Dick Player in Colditz [BBC, 1972-1974]
Have you been wanting to see Edward Hardwicke playing someone even more honest, loyal, resilient, noble, down-to-earth and understatedly BAMFy than John H Watson? Pat Grant is your man. Do you like a subtle but healthy dollop of UST in your POW camp? These two are HERE for you. Do you like to see pretty boys getting dirty and also occasionally beaten up (and down)? Dick Player (LEGIT HIS NAME) will give you all you want and more.
Ignore the fact that (like much 70s telly) the studio shots in this don’t look amazing, because it’s really well written, and acted, and is thoughtful and intelligent in a way a lot of telly of this era can be.
Also it has wee David McCallum as the other main lead, Bernard Hepton being his usual excellent self as the Commandant, more Le Grand Illusion than Nazi thug, and a host of guest actors including Pat Troughton, Michael Gough, Peter Barkworth and Geoffrey Palmer. And in series 2 (which I’m only halfway through) you get to play Your Fave Is Problematic Because He’s A Nazi with Anthony Valentine, who is flipping tremendous (and also deffo in a love/hate ust eyefucking thing with David McCallum.)
Quokka service announcement: In S1 E7 of Colditz, there is a scene in which Edward Hardwicke is without shirt. No shirt. Sans. Just a pair of pyjama bottoms. Also, there's a bit where he seductively blows smoke into another man's face because he is trying to bribe him with cigarettes.
I'm trying not to let this become #My Edward Hardwicke Thirsty Blog, but it is becoming a strain. You understand.
Also, Colditz is really good. Who knew?! The writing is excellent, and the cast includes Bernard Hepton and Michael Gough. I highly recommend. And it's all on YouTube.
