hands on his cling in a way that seemingly pulls him back from the hell his mind had him trapped in. the room comes into better focus the more a wide eye darts around, frazzled violet seeking out the ominous glow of yellow sunken into red. all he sees is zenitsu - who has his hands in theirs, gripping so tight that genya isn't sure who it benefits more. bandaged fingers curl as the cotton-like stuffing in his ears begins to clear and words are understood. zenitsu has never been someone who is quiet, but their voice rings clear and familiar. safe. genya only sees half of what he should, which means his eye is still somewhat covered despite his attempts to scratch. aoi is a familiar name. good.

luckily for him, zenitsu seems to understand what genya is trying to ask without forcing him to speak on it more. his throat feels so raw and his tongue is numb - there's a scar splitting down the muscle, running into the throat. but the tight feel of flesh pulling at gnarly scars only holds his attention for so long ; genya's gaze lingers on the strange cracks and splits that trail the skin of his friend's visible face. it doesn't surprise him that zenitsu has survived - they have always been resilient in their own way.

"...are you - is - tanjiro and - sanemi - are you all...?"

he wants to ask if they're doing okay. what about tanjiro and nezuko? what about kanao and inosuke and the others? but, genya cannot voice the questions - cannot bring himself to ask things he knows the answers to. it's so clear in zenitsu's gaze - in the way their eyes seem to flood with empathy and deep concern. a hand interrupts his observations and five fingers spell out the length of time he's been...sleeping. genya does not feel rested, as sleep may have once offered. in fact, he feels heavy and tired and his fingers slowly lose strength as they tremble in zenitsu's grasp. five months...? summer?

Their eyes drift down to Genya's hands, still in theirs. Loosened grip and trembling. Zentisu feels almost guilty that the taller has to wake up. That he has to figure out how to live now in a world where their purpose is concluded. It's not easy. Its terrifying sometimes, even. "You got cut in half? Or something? Your brother is fine, Tengen just made him go home so he wasn't sleeping in a chair for like the tenth night in a row," Zenitsu explains with a bit of an eye roll and more obvious scrunch of their nose. "He really just wont leave unless we force him. Like I get wanting to be here but the least he can do is take care of himself so you aren't smelling his BO when you wake up?"

Well, he shouldn't be surprised, Obanai was definitely more observant than Sanemi, especially outside of battle. It made sense he's interested in watching that process. Continuing to make his paste and sweetening, "I didn't take you for a sweets person at all or interested in the process." He can easily say he's never tried an amezaiku in his life, but that wasn't abnormal with how he grew up. Those sweets were a luxury.

He was rolling the bean paste in his palms when he asked a question that was a bit embarrassing. "A friend of mine taught me. Out of all the things he showed me, I liked this better than any meal." If only Obanai saw how Sanemi was when he first joined the Corps. A small, malnourished boy with a distant temper. "Figured I had him teach me it before he died on a mission." The same mission that made Sanemi the Wind Hashira.

Quiet and absent moments can let a lot slip that people would usually avoid mentioning. His eyes eyebrows furrow slightly at the mention of a friend. "No wonder you're all over the place on missions then. With all that sugar in your body it's a miracle you can stand still at all," Obanai teases flatly. He can't help it. His criticisms of Sanemi have slowly grown from harsh jabs to more whimsical pokes as time has passed.

[ KILL ]:     sender, seeing the receiver in immediate and intentionally fatal danger, intervenes by killing their assailant before they can kill the receiver. + “ it’s alright, they’re gone now… are you alright? hey, look at me; are you hurt at all? “ - Sanemi (and what if that was a human person)

the over-consumption of demons has left him lodged into a state he may never come back from. from afar, he still looks like the boy with the gun who hunts demons with no breaths to power a wakizashi's swing. up close, however, there is no denying that the glowing amber against a sea of black are no more than the eyes of a demon. how foolish he was to think that the demon slayer corps would leave him be ; to exist in a pathetic attempt at peace while hidden in the shadows, never to see the sunlight again. surely that would be fine - surely they would understand that he simply wanted to be alone.

they're hunting for me.

the blade coming towards his neck is almost predictable. of course it would end with a blade slicing head from body - of course it would end as all demons do. and as genya scrambles backwards, attempting to block the swing with an already sliced arm that quickly regenerates, he refuses to attack in defense. i am not a demon who hurts humans. i don't kill humans - i don't - !

and then the threat is gone ; the looming shadow with a blade gripped in hand disappears, leaving neck untouched. something warm splatters across his blocking palm instead, missing the mouth, spotting over a wide eye. a human appears in front of him - asks questions. genya breathes in shock as a rush of words flood the space, familiar voice deep and...worried? genya can only stare at the body lying nearby - the limp sword, the pooling blood, the torn uniform. crimson droplets slip between trembling fingers, nails rattling together.

then it registers - 'are you alright?' a managed nod. 'hey, look at me.' glowing eyes peel away from the still body. he stares at the familiar face of scars and unique head of white hair. sanemi...? 'are you hurt at all?' he shakes his head in stiff motions, claw slowly lowering as he swallows down salivating drool that comes with the ache of hunger as copper wafts the air. memories come and go, but this human is someone he has a hard time forgetting.

"S-Sanemi? Wh...what," is all he can whisper from between sharp fangs. "You...you just- that guy- " demonic eyes land on the body once more. "What did you just do?"

His world narrows in to Genya. His baby brother, a demon before his own eyes. Sanemi grabs onto Genya's shoulders. His fingers curling into the purple yukata with tension. His stomach drops further and further as a full understanding settles into his bones. "That doesn't matter right now. Don't even look at that," he dismisses while willing himself to close his eyes. A deep breath like a sigh rattles through him. "We gotta figure out what to do. Somethin' really fucking bad must have happened and I need you to tell me why..."

Purple eyes blink back open as he pulls an arm back to gesture up and down Genya's shoulders and face. "- What the hell happened to you?"

Mitsuri gave a curious tilt of her head, intrigued by Obanai's words, which made her heart feel warm in her chest. "Does it really?"

She reached out to gently take his hand in both of hers, a soft pink dusting over her face as she smiled at him. It made her happy to know he thought of her, more than she could even say - even if she tried to put it in words, she knew she would only ramble and talk over him. She didn't want to do that.

He lifts his free hand towards his covered mouth. Gently tapping a knuckle over his lips as he thinks. "Flowers. Practically the entirety of spring. The places we go together can't shake their connection with you after. Cats, of course. I see a stray and I cant help but wonder what you'd have to say about them," Obanai goes down a list he's written before. His own cheeks flushing under the white bandages. Every time he's with her he chokes down the fear he'll be too soft.
