Wearing revealing clothing is not âasking for itâ, and doesnât justify rape. However, if youâre going to wear something that shows off a lot of your body, youâre giving off the impression youâre confident about your body, and arenât afraid of people looking at it, which is going to make you appear more approachable by guys in the club or whatever - a lot of the time with good, innocent intentions. The attention is to be expected if youâre showing yourself off. This still doesnât excuse rape in any way, but I think the point a lot of people miss in the clothing not asking for it debate is that it doesnât invite rape itself, but it does tend to invite more attention, particularly from the opposite sex.
The same goes for when girls wear tops that show or even enhance their cleavage. Thereâs nothing wrong with it of course, wear what you like, but if you have something on that enhances your breasts you canât then take offence when peopleâs eyes are drawn there. This is also true for short dresses/skirts/shorts than show off a lot of your legs - peopleâs eyes are inevitably going to be drawn there. This doesnât mean they suddenly have the urge to rape you.
A few people have been getting up in arms against the suggestion that girls keep themselves safe and at less risk, on the basis that theyâre never to blame if someone rapes them. Once again, we all know the victim is never to blame. And that people should be tought not to rape under any circumstances. But this isnât something thatâs just going to happen overnight, and the fact weâre all talking about it so much shows weâre all aware itâs still an issue. So therefore it makes good sense to make some form of effort to keep yourself and anyone else away from risk until the day finally comes when itâs not an issue.
