“Do you now?” The words left the Photographer’s lips on instinct before the other’s request even registered fully in his mind. Joseph looked at the other up and down slowly, eyeing the wrung hands and slightly off way the light glinted off grey irises. His own ocean blue eyes studied the Embalmer’s face critically, chin inclining slightly as he paused in thought.

Aesop Carl was a very... special survivor; at least, that was the case to Joseph. Attractive in the curve of his jaw, in the bend of his wrist, in the scent of chemicals and death that clung to pale skin. Sometimes the man, bound in the ropes in the arms of a rocket chair, merely held his hands together in his lap patiently as the countdown ticked away. It was those quiet and still moments where their gazes met that stuck with Joseph the most and eventually led to a rather silly offer.

Shaking his head, Joseph let out a small sigh, brushing a bit of dust off of his coat. “You and I are both aware that I was merely jesting at the time. It matters not how many times you offer your life to me, nor whatever different way I send you back here. Your mortality, your status as a survivor, your soul-- whatever it is that you despise so-- it is not something that can merely be ‘killed’. In truth, I had not even any whisper of a plan when I said it. I was... simply curious... how far you were willing to let me go. My apologies.” He did mean it, despite the blasé tone. It was a childish taunt and a shameful display of poor self-control. Joseph felt that he ought to be over such impulses by now, but adrenaline and the hunting grounds did odd things to one’s psyche.

Is there a specific sort of meal or sweet that makes them smile or feel comforted when eating it? Is there a special/personal memory that is associated with it, perhaps when they had it as a child or a meal for the rainy days?

Joseph has always been fond of Earl Grey tea, taking it with milk and sugar when younger, and straight when older. It is a familiar, soothing scent, drunk more for the aroma and warmth it provides than the taste. And, of course, as a pair to the various delicacies delightfully arranged during a formal afternoon tea. He observed the traditional tea time his entire living life, and even at the manor he joins the other hunters, primarily Mary, for tea daily. It is a comforting routine.

When he was younger, mille-feuille was a favorite between the both of the twins. (Jam-covered teeth grinning at him across the table.) The pastry only improved with time and custard cream, though admittedly, it has been a long time since Joseph gleaned any joy from sweets. (Claude was the sweet tooth, and anything Claude enjoyed was that much emptier without his presence, crumbling like ash in his mouth.)

There's no food in particular that gives Norton a fuzzy feeling in his chest, nothing that makes him smile unconsciously. It isn't anything about food specifically, but rather that Norton almost never smiles from the heart, even as he laughs at a corny joke or charms the people around him. (He never bothered to pretend to be friendly in the manor. Just unnerved people with his dead-eyed stare and his cutting words.)

Even before the accident, he ate to sustain himself and not for pleasure, since in his mind, what pleasure could he gain in cheap mishmash, hard bread, and soot-covered fruit? Sometimes he even resented food, resented the fact that what little wages he managed to earn from risking his life and lungs ended up in his stomach to be expelled later. Food was mediocre, and his wallet was empty. Sometimes, back then, he wondered what the point of it all was.

Sometimes, now, eyes and faces stare up at him from his plate, and he stabs a fork into the meat as if that could kill his own shame.

The scent of freshly-baked bread wafting through the streets or out of the kitchen gives comfort to the prodigious inventor, a feeling like that of warm sun on his skin. His mother used to bake for him in the morning, and though his true passion lied in unseen forces of nature and the chill of cold metal, Alva had always appreciated the fond memories of measuring ingredients and kneading flour-caked dough alongside the woman.

In his adult life, he never really had time or thought to bake. Looking back on it now, in his state of not-quite-life, Alva wonders if anything would have changed, if for one day he had set all of his racing thoughts aside and did something simple, used the time he always felt was wasted on mortal living to actually live as the human he didn’t remember he was. Would anything have been different, he wonders, if he started the last day of his original life baking a fresh loaf of bread? Would the homely smell have calmed him, calmed his apprentice? Would things not have ended up so broken?
