You are not special. Every message sent to AI makes a small town lose water. Every message sent leads to worse heat. Every message.

It is true that running powerful AI models requires a lot of electricity, and that said electricity often comes from fossil fuels. This increase in energy use equals more CO₂ emissions, which contribute to global warming.

Why?

AI needs data centers. Big models like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini (awful, if I may say), or Meta's LLaMA are trained and run on thousands of high-performance GPUs in huge data centers. These data centers use tons of electricity to run the GPUs/CPUs and cool down the servers (that generate a massive amount of heat).

Most of this electricity used still comes from fossil fuels. Even if they claim the data center uses "green" energy, it is, most of the time, partial or mixed with fossil sources.

It also uses millions of gallons of water to cool down the machines and, while water is a renewable resource, it can strain local water supplies, especially in areas already facing droughts.

Yes, it contributes to emissions. Just like other things do.

But this mentality is holding us down. You're not causing global change by sending a text to an AI, nor by using straws, nor by using a car instead of walking. Yes, it contributes, but it is not the biggest problem. Even if we all stopped and suddenly became completely eco-friendly in everything, global change will not stop. Because normal individuals are not the culprits. The real culprits are the conglomerates.

Over 70% of global emissions come from companies, nation-states, and state-owned entities: oil giants, natural gas conglomerates, and megacorporations that prioritize short-term profit over long-term survival.

So I think all this victim blaming is absurd. You will not save the world by turning off the lights, you will not stop climate change by recycling bottle caps. I'm not saying we shouldn't do it; we should, definitely. But what they're doing with this is blaming us, even when we can do nothing to stop it. They make us feel like it's our responsibility. They make us feel guilty while they buy politicians to delay regulations.

So we will be doing a better work if we blamed who we have to blame instead of blaming people that use AI. Because AI is a tool, it is not inherently good or bad. It's about who uses it. And we must stop there and ask ourselves, who's using it and why?

Maybe it is someone's only way to get the education they can't pay for.

Maybe it is someone's only way to learn something new because they have no one to teach them.

Maybe it is someone's only thing keeping them from pulling the trigger.

AI is not perfect. It won't be soon. It's not even AI if we're really speaking. But it is useful to some.

The blame needs to be directed towards the fossil fuel execs; towards the tech billionaires who won't slow down, even at the cost of the world we live in; towards the governments that refuse to regulate; towards the very system that made people need a chatbot to survive and progress.

Not to the lonely girl chatting with a chatbot at three A.M. to feel something.

Not to the boy asking for math help because he can't afford tutoring and maybe his parents couldn't go to school either, or maybe he doesn't even have any.

We're blaming the wrong people, but that's exactly what they want: "Divide and conquer." Because if we're too busy blaming each other, we're not going after them, turned against the wrong targets.

AI is a tool. And just the same way machines replaced handwork in the Industrial Revolution, it will replace us too, eventually. And we can protest, but it is going to stick, just how it did back then. Instead of trying to delete it, it is necessary to regulate it. Like they did with machines back then.

AI is the printing press, the steam engine, the assembly line; all over again. What matters is not the tool; it is who holds it, how they use it, and who gets crushed under it.

During the Industrial Revolution, machines replaced millions of workers, created horrifying factory conditions, and concentrated wealth in the hands of a few.

But eventually, because people fought, they didn't disappear; they were regulated. Not because the people in power were kind, but because they were forced to protect human dignity by those who refused to be trampled.

That's what we need for AI. No bans. No moral panic. Not blaming the vulnerable for reaching out to the only hand that answered them.

AI could absolutely be used to build a better world. But we need to regulate it, and soon.

And honestly, who's to blame? The AI or the fuckers that can make it eco-friendly but don't because it costs more money? Because it would shave 0.3% off their profit margins.

AI doesn't choose how it's trained.

AI doesn't choose where the electricity comes from.

AI doesn't choose to be run by fossil-fueled data centers instead of clean grids.
