I also still plan to add more parts to my other fics, but time in between posts will be more spaced out!!
itâs still surreal for me to think that people actually enjoy reading what I write, and the perfect push to keep me going, so thankyou once again!! <333

synopsis: azriel makes a deal with himself to get his shadows back
Warnings: angst, fluff
pt.1
Heâd gotten so used to you being there, so comfortable with the shadows that always surrounded him.Â
Now that they were goneânow that you were goneâhe was left with an inescapable feeling. Loss.Â
It felt like lead in his body. It twisted, and turned, weighing itself down on his ribs. Aching at every little thing he began to notice, the little things you did for him. The things heâd taken for granted.Â
He missed the way your darkness covered him like a protective blanket. Missed the ease it brought him. Without it, he felt bare.Â
He missed your voice, your whispers. If he closed his eyes and thought hard enough he could almost hear it. Almost. Heâd never taken the time to memorize it. Never took the time to see beyond what was on the surface. Why hadnât he?Â
How did he disregard you?
You, the first to show him compassion, apart from his own mother. You, who suffered with him in that cold keep, locked away. Unable to grow, to learn, to live.Â
You were there for him, with him.Â
How could he have overlooked you?
He holds on to your words, the idea that you would answer if he called brought him only a fraction of the comfort you gave him daily.Â
You werenât really gone, he kept telling himself. Heâd see you again.Â
When it was necessary.Â
No longer would you whisper a good morning to him when he woke, or a goodnight when he slept. No longer would you be there, just to be with him. Just to rest on his shoulders, or weave between his fingers.Â
Heâd used you, like a tool. Like you were just another weapon in his arsenal.Â
The pain in his chest swelled, twinging as the image of misery on your breathtaking face invaded his mind. The awful things heâd said, the hateful accusation heâd made.Â
You cared so greatly for him, for so long, only to receive cruelty in return.Â
How had he ever thought your absence poetic?Â
Being away from him was a physical struggle. The need to be there for him, to comfort him, to apologize, and to express your faith in him was undying. You were surprised youâd lasted a full day.Â
No matter how he treated you, no matter how much it hurt, heâd always be everything.Â
Yet you kept hearing his words. âAre you jealous? Is that it?â Kept seeing that angry glare heâd aimed at you, and how it melted away when youâd taken form. âBecause I donât give you enough attention?â
You kept remembering the change in his eyes, in the way he looked at you. Like heâd just then realized you had a mind of your own, that he didnât have to think for you.Â
Youâd thought it would make you happy. To have him really see you.Â
It didnât.Â
You felt anger and sorrow. Angry you practically had to spell it out for him. Angry the most observant person in the Night Court, if not all of Prythian, had never spared you a second glance. Sad that you had to look like him to get his attention.Â
You'd given him every opportunity, you'd shown him your capacity for emotions countless times. He ignored it every single time. No, ignore wasn't right.
Ignorant.
Ignorant was the better word.
Perhaps it was your fault for expecting more of him.Â
In the beginning, his neglect hadnât even mattered. You didn't realize he treated you any differently. That is until you saw him interact with Rhys and Cassian, and then eventually Mor and Amren.Â
With them, he was⌠still distant, closed off in a way. But he smiled, he laughed, he joked. He empathized with them, got angry for them, or sad, or happy. He loved them.
With you, it was just, find me this⌠bring me hereâŚÂ go listen to them⌠keep me hiddenâŚÂ
He never smiled at you.Â
It was your own fault for expecting him to think of you as anything other than a servant.Â
Thatâs what you are, right?
The need to grovel at his feet came back. You felt ridiculous. You lived to serve him. Without him you wouldnât even have a life.Â
You were such a fool, living darkness throwing a fit over some hurt feelings.
He was the only reason you were able to feel anything at all. He gave you meaning. He was your purpose in life, not the other way around. He had no obligation to you, he didn't even have to call on you. The fact that he did was a gift in itself. Just like the pain you felt was a gift.
Without him, youâd just be a regular shadow.Â
That should be enough for you.Â
So when you heard his call, when you felt that irresistible tug on your soul, you answered.Â
You answered though you knew he had no reason for it. He wasnât in danger, he didnât want to go anywhere, didnât need you to spy on anyone or find anything, he was just calling you.Â
You answered because no matter what you said, no matter how you felt, he would always be everything.Â
Azriel waits for you. Standing in the center of his room, shifting his balance from his right leg to his left.Â
He couldnât keep his hands still, they ran through his hair, adjusted his shirt, got stuffed in his pockets only to leave them a moment later and rub at his neck. His arms cross in an effort to keep them still.Â
He was anxious, and restless, and nervous about messing up, but most of all he was angry at himself.Â
He wouldnât be surprised if you ignored his call, even though you said you couldnât. Youâd probably found a way, after all heâs done he wouldnât blame you.Â
It would hurt like hell, but heâd understand. Why would you bother giving him a second chance?Â
Heâd never even asked you for a name.Â
Did you even have one? Do shadows need names? They obviously have a language, one he was able to speak and understand. Did you have a family? A people? Were you born or did you just appear one day?Â
These were all things he shouldâve known already. Things he shouldâve had the mind to be curious about.Â
He was too focused on himself and everyone else.
The lights dim, announcing your presence.Â
His arms uncross, falling at his sides. You really came.Â
Swirls of darkness slip into his room, slowly inching toward him. The way they move is lethargic. It makes him sick.
He speaks when you make it within a foot of him. Pushing past the lump in his throat. âIâm sorry.âÂ
The shadows stop. Gone was the mighty spymaster. All that remained was the boy who cried out to you on that cold night several centuries ago.
âIâm so sorry.â He repeats. âYou donât have to accept my apology. I don't want you to. I know I havenât earned it. I just want you to know that If I could go back and change everything I would.â The words were nothing but the truth. He wished more than anything to go back and treat you right. To erase all the hurt he put you through.
His heart jumps when you continue toward him, slithering up his body, encasing him in your energy.Â
He feels you curl around his ear, and then he hears your voice. That airy tone reverberating through his head. A sound only he could hear. Only he could appreciate. One he hadn't until he knew what it was like to lose it.Â
âI forgive you.â Â
Azriel wanted to weep at those words. For you. For him. For what heâd done to the two of you. For what the two of you couldâve been if heâd just sacrificed a little of his time to be with you. Like you always had for him.
âNo, you donât,â He began, âI donât deserve your forgiveness.âÂ
The lights flicker, once, twice, then he feels it. Your hand.
His gaze trails down to watch your smokey fingers lace with his. The feeling of your skin touching his had his heart racing for other reasons. Very different from the chill of your shadows.
He lets his hand curl around your own. Squeezing as he went on, hoping you could hear and feel every last drop of his sincerity. âI could apologize to you every day for the rest of our eternal lives and I still wouldnât deserve it.âÂ
You step in front of him, meeting his stare. The emotion it held stitched something back together inside of you, something that'd gotten torn apart years ago.
âI will do everything in my power to change that. I promise.â His thumb rubs circles on your hand. âI will spend the rest of my life proving that I am worthy of you. That you chose right.â He felt his body tingle with each word, the sensation traveling down his arms, his chest, and his back. Ink undoubtedly marking his skin with a visual reminder of the deal heâd just made with himself.
To strive to one day earn your forgiveness. Your loyalty.Â
You reach out a hand resting it on his face, so faintly it barely even touched him. Afraid you were overstepping.
He leans into it, covering it with his own, holding it there.
Your mind drifts back to when you met him.
His small voice, crying out for anyone.Â
The strength of the Gods couldnât have kept you from him. Â
You didnât choose wrong. You knew that. It didn't matter if he believed it or not.
âI swear it.â He vows, bringing you back to the present. His hazel eyes so intense, so sure, burning into your own. You couldn't help yourself. Â
You kissed him.Â
His lips connect with yours and everything stops. Everything fades away until itâs just you and him. Â
He knew heâd never stop chasing the feeling it gave him. Something so simple, so easy, like breathing or gravity. Something he couldnât live without. Not now that heâd had a taste.Â
One of his hands land on your waist, pulling you closer. The other leaves your hand to find purchase on the back of your neck, angling your head to deepen the kiss.Â
It was euphoric, he wanted to get lost in it, in you.Â
You pull away when his tongue brushes over your bottom lip, needing a moment to breathe.
Your eyes remain shut for a moment, stuck in that feeling. When you finally pry them open you study his face, taking in every detail, committing every single bit to memory.Â
He's breathing heavily, scanning you with a hunger youâve never seen before. Eyes darting all over your face, repeatedly drifting back to your lips as if he too was struggling with restraint.Â
Then he smiles. Pure elation on his beautiful face.Â
The sight was divine.Â
You copied the action, smiling wide. You didnât care if it looked or felt unnatural. You were just happy.Â
a/n: quick little idea/drabble i had (that could honestly get turned into another series) idk if this has been done before, if it has let me know please, I'll probably delete this. I hope you enjoy :)) <333
synopsis: azriel takes you for granted
Warnings: angst
pt.2
He thought it was poetic, the way the shadows disappeared around Mor. She brightened up his life, literally. Â
Never did he think heâd find someone else capable of doing such a thing. Until he met Elaine.Â
The change was gradual, so gradual he hadnât even noticed.Â
They stayed with him, at first, treating the once-human girl like any other person. But then she was turned fae, and Azrielâs visits with her began. With each visit, less, and less, shadows joined him.Â
He was completely unaware, she stole his focus.Â
He felt protective of her, like a precious flower he had to keep from wilting. That protectiveness slowly became something more, a yearning. Even more so when Cassian discovered he was mated to the eldest Acheron.
Though the night Elaine kissed him, everything changed.
Theyâd sat outside, in her garden, and even though the sky was already dark theyâd stayed. Getting lost in conversation. She told him about things she cared about, and he listened. She asked him about himself, and he answered.
At some point she ended up in front of him, gazing up at his lips.Â
She looked so beautiful, illuminated by the stars, surrounded by her lovely garden. A sight he felt lucky to witness.Â
When she leaned forward he couldnât stop himself. He met her halfway, so softly, so gently. But as soon as his lips touched hers, all those feelings for her died. He felt nothing.
The switch in emotions almost gave him whiplash. It was dizzying.Â
Underwhelming didnât feel like the best word for it, but it was the only thing he could come up with. Nothing was exciting about the kiss, nothing revolutionary. It wasnât like it felt wrong, but it didnât feel right either.Â
Disappointment was what Azriel felt. A little part of him was hoping that maybe the Acheron sister would be his mate.Â
It seemed fitting, right? Three brothers, three sisters. But now that her lips were against his, he knew it wasnât right. Â
The spymaster pulls back, taking a step away. Looking at the beautiful woman. Any feelings beyond protectiveness had vanished from his body. Not even a tickle of butterflies when she smiled at him, so obviously delighted with the kiss they shared.
It wasnât her fault, any male would be lucky to have Elaine. But it was clear to him, that male couldnât be him.
âItâs getting late, we should head in.â Her face drops at his words, he doesnât even look at her as he begins leading her inside and back to her room. Â
He should say more, apologize, and tell her how he feels so she at least has a reason. Not just silence. But his brain was still reeling from the drastic change in emotionsâor lack thereof. No words leave his mouth.
He walks Elaine up to her room. Bidding her a short goodnight before leaving the frowning woman to her own devices.
He kicked himself for hurting her, for allowing it to get that far. Elaine was just so tempting, and he was so hopeful. He kicked himself for that too.Â
Of course he wouldnât have a mate.Â
He couldn't even give the poor woman an apology.
It wasnât until he made it to his room, all the way up in the House of Wind, that he realized no shadows were with him. Not even a whisper reached his ears. Â
Theyâd been with him as long as he could remember, and now they were just gone.Â
He couldnât place the feeling they left in their absence. But he knew he didnât like it.Â
*****
You knew it was unfair of you to be jealous. He didnât know how deep your devotion ran. He didnât see life the way you had, you didnât even think he saw you as anything other than a servant.Â
It wasnât unfair of you to feel sad about that.Â
Youâre nothing but shadows to him. When heâs always been everything to you. From the moment he first called to you, when you were barely a flicker of darkness.
But he would never see that.Â
Azriel is sound asleep when you slip through the cracks of his door and into his room.Â
He hadnât even called to you. Did he even care you were gone?Â
You find yourself taking form, a form of something he could relate to. A beautiful woman, someone like Elaine, or Mor. But you knew you looked nothing like them. Your darkness couldn't captivate beauty like that. Bold and enchanting, like the Morrigan. Pure and innocent, like Miss Elaine.
A sigh leaves your mouth as you curl up in your designated corner, looking at the hands that felt alien to you. Even if you showed him this form, saw him face to face, would he see you any differently?
You doubt it. Youâd always be shadows to him.
You were so busy wallowing to yourself in the corner you didnât see the shadowsinger stir at your sigh. Didnât see him blink awake, or sit up and look around.Â
But you felt it when his eyes settled on you for what felt like the first time. Heard the gasp that left his mouth.Â
Your heart stops, frozen in fear for half a second, before it starts again, and you collapse into clouds of darkness.
*****
It was the middle of the night when Azriel woke Rhys up, shouting at him from outside his mental barriers. The worry in his voice was what had the High Lord jumping out of his mate's arms, waking Cassian, and heading to the abode carved into the top of the mountain.Â
Azriel paces around the office room, running a hand through his hair. If he wasnât so stressed he wouldâve noticed that his shadows donât try to comfort him like usual.
âWhatâs going on?â Rhys asks as he and Cassian walk into the room. Both are in different states of undress with looks of concern on each of their faces.
Cassian immediately notes Azrielâs distressed state, a rare sight considering the spymaster had long ago mastered staying calm and stoic in the face of trouble.
Cassian almost doesn't want to know what has the male so bothered.
âThere was something in my room.âÂ
âWhat?!â The reactions are simultaneous. Any sign of sleep was immediately gone from both of their faces.
âI think it was a woman⌠I donât know I didnât get a good enough look. It disappeared right after I woke up.â His fingers grip his hair. Heart still beating fast from the interaction. No one has ever snuck up on him like that.Â
He's usually the one doing the sneaking.
His shadows, which had returned sometime after heâd fallen asleep, hadnât even noticed the stranger, if they had they certainly didnât warn him. He tries not to feel the nerves that fact struck in him.
âWhat do you mean, âdisappearedâ?â Cassian asks.
âExactly what it sounds like, Cass. One second it was sitting in the corner of my room, the next it was gone.â Which made absolutely no sense, the wards surrounding House of Wind forbid winnowing of any kind.Â
This was obviously a serious issue, the wards could either be faulty or someone could have found a way around them.Â
âAre you sure it wasnât just a vivid dream?â Cassian asks, just trying to come with any better explanation.
âWas your encounter with Bryaxis just a vivid dream?â Azriel snaps. There was no way he imagined it. No way.
Rhys diffuses, stepping in with hands raised in surrender. Silently telling Azriel that they were on his side. âWhat did it look like when it disappeared? Did it look like it was winnowing?âÂ
The spymaster thinks about it. No. No, it didnât.Â
It was like its body blended with the darkness. Became the darkness. Almost like⌠Azrielâs eyes widen.
A shadow.Â
âWhat? What is it, Az?â Rhys asks, probably noticing the revelation he was having from the look on his face.Â
The shadowsinger's face becomes neutral, as calm as a person with his features was capable of looking. He shakes his head. âMaybe it was nothing. Sorry for waking you guys up. Iâll talk to you tomorrow.â Then he left without another word.
Rhys and Cassian share a look. A mix of bewilderment, concern, and exhaustion filled their features.
Azriel waits till he reaches his room to say anything, making sure to close the door behind him before a single word can leave his mouth. âAre you jealous? Is that it? Is that why you always leave around Elaine and Mor? Why you thought it would be fun to scare me and my family? Because I don't give you enough attention?âÂ
His shadows scatter, detaching from his body, hiding under his bed and in the darker nooks of his room.Â
âDonât hide now. I know it was you, thatâs why you didnât warn me.â He gazes into the dark corners of his room, glaring. How could they keep something like this from him? Hide the fact that they could take form? âShow yourself.â
There was an eerie pause, Azrielâs heart began beating faster. Then the fae lights started to flicker.
With each flash more and more shadows gathered before him. Building on each other. The lights went out completely.
When he turned them back on you stood before him.
The most beautiful creature heâd ever seen.
Pure darkness rose from your body, looking like black smoke. It encapsulates you, different from the way it encapsulates him. The darkness wasn't an extension of your body, it was a part of you, was you, moved with you like it was just another limb.
âMy intention was not to scare.â You spoke in a whisper heâd heard many times. A whisper that was most loyal to him. That fulfilled his every beck and call.
Azriel was at a loss for words. You were stunning, a word he'd not known the true meaning of until he laid eyes on you.
âFor years, centuries, Iâve followed you. I chose you as my singer. I answered your call.â Tears fill your eyes, but when they fall they dissipate into smoke. Blowing away with a wave of your hand. âI have shown you nothing but loyalty, and care. Iâve sat back while watching you love others and Iâve made peace with it, Iâve accepted our differences.â You suck in a deep breath and steady yourself. âBut when I leave, you donât care, don't even notice.â Your lips tremble, voice breaking as you ask him a question he couldnât even think to answer. âAfter everything Iâve done, how can I mean so little to you?âÂ
Azrielâs mouth opens and closes like a fish out of water. He has so much to say but his vocal cords are tied. He did care, though it was clear he hadnât shown it enough. He found himself thinking about all the little times the shadows had been there for him, comforting him, caring for him. And now he could put a face to those moments, it wasnât just shadows, it was you thatâd been there for him over the years. Â
âSo yes, I was sad and mad, and maybe a little jealous... But I wasnât trying to scare you. I was just- I donât know! Imagining? Yearning for a life I canât have?âÂ
The fae lights began blinking again making his heart jump with every flicker. He doesn't want you to disappear yet. He opens his mouth to say something but you beat him to it.Â
âYou donât have to say anything, I donât want an apology.â You lift a shadowy hand, wiping your face and steeling yourself. âDonât fret, shadowsinger, Iâm still your faithful servant. I couldnât refuse your calls even if I wanted to. And Iâm okay with that, itâs what I chose. Just donât expect me to be there for you in moments where you can't even acknowledge my existence.âÂ
The lights flicker again and you're gone.Â
Leaving Azriel to wonder if heâs lost you. Although, he never really had you in the first place.

The feeling was unshakable, those hands grabbing you, forcing you into the darkness. The freezing cold void of absolutely nothing and everything all at once.Â
Itâd been a day since the incident, the bruises and scratches on your body were already healing, getting better by the second.Â
You hadnât felt anything since then, no presence in the corner of your mind, no eyes on you, just silence.Â
You didnât know why its absence brought you no comfort. Why it made you feel worse. Like your body was trying to warn you about something your mind hadnât caught up with yet.Â
However, that was the last thing you wanted to think about as you lay beside Azrielâs form. Listening to his soft heartbeat. Letting the rhythm soothe you into a state of calm.Â
You were so tired, you just needed a little bit of sleep, to rejuvenate your brain. And if you had any hope of avoiding that nightmare you had to keep it far out of your thoughts. Distract your mind with other things. Conjure a nice dream for yourself. A dream about you and the shadowsinger.Â
A dream where the two of you could just exist together. With no worries, no foreboding feelings in your hearts, just you and him, and your family, and happiness.Â
Slowly that disturbed twisting feeling of unease faded away, and you closed your eyes. Ready for sleep to take you away.
Then it rushed you.Â
Darting out from whatever crevice it had been lurking in. Invading your mind, taking hold of your senses.Â
It tore apart your dream, cracked open your fabrication, and sent a shockwave through your system. It felt like the magic under your skin flinched.Â
You gasp, eyes snapping open as you sit up.Â
You feel Azrielâs hands on your shoulders, then you see his face in front of yours. Hazel eyes darkened with worry.Â
It had been hiding from you, waiting for you to let your guard down. Waiting for the perfect opportunity to grab you and pull you into its never-ending darkness.Â
It snapped your dream world in half.Â
You shiver.Â
âI donât know what to do.â You confess to him. âItâs like it has a mind of its own.âÂ
Azrielâs hands grip you tighter and pull you into his chest. His wings cocooning you. âWeâll go see the sisters first thing in the morning. You can give it back to Elaine. Let her deal with it.âÂ
You swallow. Knowing that wasnât an option. It would destroy her. And in turn, destroy Feyre.Â
He reads your face. âYou think you need to keep it? That because of your abilities you have some obligation to? You donât. What if your abilities make it worse? At least, with Elaine it canât take form.âÂ
You donât voice your thoughts, you canât fight with him.Â
You donât say that it would eat the newly turned Fae alive in her fragile state. Pick away at her mind until there was nothing left. That you at least had a fighting chance against it, even if you hadnât quite figured that part out yet.
But you donât need to say anything, not when he could see it all in your eyes. The shadowsinger sighed, so frustrated, so powerless, he wanted to do so much more, wanted to ease your stress, but he didnât know how other than by being with you. Offering you his support.
It didnât feel like nearly enough.Â
He held you the rest of the night.Â
*****
Youâd abandoned sleep. Until you could find a way to counter this thing, to keep it caged, you would stay awake.Â
You were very experienced in nightmares, probably the most experienced. You could manifest the perfect nightmare for any person, reduce the finest warrior into a sniveling coward at your feet. But youâd never taken somebody's nightmare before. Never had to hide from someone elseâs fears. Â
Even if you wanted to give it back to Elaine, you wouldnât know the first thing to do. It was very different than twisting someoneâs fears.Â
So for the past week, youâd been doing research. Re-reading those books from Helion, scouring the library for anything else that mentioned dreams, nightmares, or the subconscious. When your brain needed a break from words you trained your body. Joining Cassian from time to time.Â
The training backfired miserably, making you more tired, body aching with fatigue every hour, minute, and second of the day.Â
But you couldnât sleep, couldnât go in that cauldron again. Not when it could hold you there. Keep you from waking. And even though Rhys had started sleeping at the House of Wind to ensure that you wouldnât be trapped, you couldnât risk it.Â
You didnât know if it would continue to attack you, like normal nightmares did, you had no way of knowing what its next move would be. It didnât act like anything youâd encountered before.Â
It could attack someone else next time, attack Azriel.Â
That thought alone was enough to keep you awake for the past week.Â
But with each passing day, keeping your eyes open got harder and harder.Â
âYou canât let this continue.âÂ
Azriel hadnât even noticed his brotherâs presence. Youâd taken all of his focus, diminished the spymaster to a man who couldnât even hear Cassianâs footsteps. Which were not at all quiet.
The two Illyrians watch you from the library doorway. You sat with a multitude of books scattered around you, the one you were currently reading almost wider than the length of your hand and you were already halfway through. They watch your eyelids slowly fall, watch you try to fight it by blinking rapidly and shaking your head.Â
Azriel was in full agreement with Cassian. This couldnât go on.
Azriel feels hopeful when your eyes finally close, youâre head falling back against the sofa cushion. He holds his breath as he waits for you to sink deeper into sleep, not daring to make a sound in fear of startling you awake. But you shoot up a moment later.
Eyes flying open as you grab the couch like you had to catch yourself from falling. Head snapping to and fro as you frantically search for something that isnât there. Harshly rubbing the sleep from your eyes over and over, but it only makes your eyes burn with a fire that could only be sated by letting them shut.Â
In a moment of desperation, you grip your wrist, letting the sharp claws dig into your arm. Repressing the sleep in your system with pain.
Your hand is snatched away.
âStop!â Azriel yells panicked. Watching as blood began to drip down your arm. âFuck. Cassian can you-âÂ
His brother was already handing him a first aid kit.
The sounds of shaky breaths and ruffling bandages fill the room. You donât look at him as he wraps your arm, so mortified, so embarrassed he had to see you this way. That anyone could see you this way. So weak.
He grabs your jaw, forcing you to look him in the eyes. Heâs not rough, but heâs not gentle either. So much emotion filled his face.Â
So much worry, and love, and sadness.Â
Then his eyes harden. âYou need to sleep.â You try to shake your head but can't with his grip on you. âItâs not a suggestion.âÂ
Tears fill your eyes. No. You canât. Not when you knew it was salivating at the thought. If it managed to kill you in your sleep, only the Gods knew what could happen. If that horror would be unleashed on the world.Â
You couldnât risk it. You wouldnât.Â
At first, the shadowsinger was torn on what to do. He couldnât bear the thought of ordering you to suffer. Still canât. But you were suffering anyway. He couldnât watch you deteriorate anymore.Â
He would sacrifice your trust in him if it meant you were healthy.
Â
*****
Dinner was quiet, Rhys and Amren were busy. So that left you, Azriel, Mor, and Cassian. The Acheron sisters ate in their rooms and kept to themselves, though you had seen the older sister a few times. She joined you in the library every once in a while. She never spoke, never looked your way, but she stayed.
âYou look like shit.â Mor had said when she saw you, slapping a hand over her mouth as if realizing she spoke aloud. Leave it to Mor to speak the truth.
âGee, thanks.â You replied, wanting to send her a smile to let her know you didnât take it to heart but could only find the energy to slide ungracefully into the chair next to her.Â
Mor turns to you, forgetting her full plate of food. âGods, look at you!â You tense as she reaches for your face, fingers brushing the bags under her eyes. Her touch made sleep slowly enter your system again. âWhy are you doing this to yourself?â She asks as if she didnât know the answer to that question. Which she most certainly did.Â
You donât have it in you to say anything so instead you start shoveling the tasteless food in your mouth. Forcing yourself to swallow it even though it felt like you were chewing chalk.Â
âYou know weâre here for you, donât you?â She continued, and the food became increasingly hard to swallow with every word she spoke. âYou donât have to fight this alone, it wasnât even your battle to begin with.âÂ
Your heart drops at her words. Not your battle?Â
Thatâs right, this all started with your selfish need to feel useful. So you wouldnât have to lay around like a weakling. All you did was make everything worse. Of course, you did. Â
You reach for your water when you feel the food start to rise back up. The water doesnât help. Your whole body starts to feel clammy, and your head starts to spin.Â
So you pause leaning back to take a few slow deep breaths through your nose, swallowing the spit that didnât stop gathering in your mouth.
âFeyre would hate to see you like this.âÂ
Those words were the final blow.
You jump from your seat, hand on your mouth as you dash out of the dining room. Running for the nearest bin, the house seemed to hear your inner pleas because a bucket was waiting for you in the hallway. You fell to your knees in front of it. Too busy hurling up all the food you just ate to cry out at the pain of your kneecaps slamming into the stone floor.
You feel his warm gentle hands on you. Softly rubbing your back, and pulling away your hair. Waiting patiently for you to finish heaving.Â
When you could breathe without gagging you leaned into him, letting him wipe your face with his sleeve. Ruining the fine shirt he wore. âCan you call Madja? Tell her I need another tonic?âÂ
The little shots of energy thatâd kept you standing the last two days, were all you could think of. You needed them before it was too late. Before a week's worth of sleep could catch up on you.Â
Before that thing was free to roam.
Azriel looks to Cassian, expression grim, and he nods. The general was rushing off the next second. You hope heâs getting Madja.
A moment later Cassian was running back over and crouching beside you, pushing a glass of water in your hands. You wanted to protest, remembering how the water hadnât helped just moments before, but Azriel takes the cup and puts it to your lips.Â
âDrink.â You comply. He tilts the cup up and up and up until you drink the final drop. âThere you go.â He whispers, setting the cup aside so both of his hands are free to soothe over your body. âThatâs it.âÂ
The effect was swift.Â
That magic that was always writhing under your skin begins to slow. Itâs vibrating energy dying out. Until it wasn't even a tingle.
âIâm sorry.â He whispered, and your heart dropped. What did he do?
Your head becomes foggy, and your body is no longer your own. You canât fight it as you slump back, canât do a single thing when your eyes fall shut, canât even think as your brain powers off.Â
All you could do was sleep.
Azriel holds you close to him, lip curling at the smell of your fear permeating through the air. âIâm sorry.â He whispered again, though he knew you couldnât hear him now.Â
âIt will work,â Mor said from where she leaned against the wall, watching you with a solemn look on her face. She, along with everyone else in the inner circle, was on board with the idea the moment Madja brought it up earlier in the week.
âIt better.â He was reluctant until today, until he watched you hurt yourself. The fact that you couldnât keep your food down was the cherry topper.
Azriel just hoped the Faebane in your system would last longer than the sleeping tonic.
The drug succeeded in quelling your magic, succeeded in its purpose of ridding your mind of that awful thing. But it also succeeded in other things.Â
Without your magic, you were unable to conjure a happy dream for yourself.Â
Leaving you trapped in your very own nightmare.Â
*****
Your mother smiled with pride as she adjusted your hair. âEvery male will want you.â Your whole life had led up to this moment, everything you had been taught was for this night. The night a male would choose you.Â
The night you would submit.Â
 So why werenât you excited?Â
âStop that frowning. Itâs unsightly.â Your mother leads you to a mirror. A pressure settles on your chest when you look at yourself.Â
The sheer white gown did nothing to hide your body. Giving anyone who looked a full view of what was underneath. Your face was painted, your skin shaved and silkyâglowing from whatever substance sheâd lathered on youâand your wings were spread wide, fluttering at a pace that made every intricate design viewable.Â
Your mother looked the happiest youâd ever seen her. The expression uncanny on her. âThey wonât be able to keep their hands off you.âÂ
You felt something inside you twist at the thought.Â
âMother?â You say before you can think better of it. She meets your eyes through the mirror. She looked at you like you were a trophy, an object to be displayed not loved. Not that you ever knew the difference.
I donât want to do this.Â
The words were right there. At the forefront of your mind. All you had to do was give them a voice.Â
But it was like your lips were wired shut. Your mouth doesnât move, your voice doesnât work. You say nothing.Â
It wouldnât have mattered if you had anyway. You didnât have a choice, you never did. âDonât worry, child, none of the others can compare with your beauty. You will not be left unpicked.âÂ
Her words brought you no solace.Â
You hold your chin high, as she leads you out of the hut and toward the growing horde. You make sure you stand straight, shoulders squared like you had been taught. Make sure your hips swayed just slightly, just enough to keep their attention like your mother had shown you.Â
Make sure your teeth donât grit, and your legs donât shake. Make sure your wings donât twitch, and your smile doesnât fall.
Your mother parades you around for every male to see. Laughing at some of the comments they made, insinuating banter between the rowdy ones, reveling in the way they fought over you.Â
With each laugh, each yell, each claim made upon you that pressure in your chest grew. Except it wasnât just in your chest now, it was in your stomach, and in your head, and under your skin.
Your wings folded subconsciously, making your mother sink her sharp claws into your wrist. Not enough to bleed, she wouldnât ruin all her work, but enough to hurt. Enough to make your wings snap back open.Â
Is this really it?
The feeling gets worse when she leads you toward the other women, and then it doubles when she leaves to sit with the onlookers. Not so much as a goodbye, or even a second glance as she walks away.Â
Your heart pounds as you blend yourself in with the sea of white.Â
Maneuvering through the women was easy, each and every one of them was silent, tense, and scared. You try not to look at their faces for too long, didnât want to be able to notice which ones were missing once everything was over.Â
It wasnât uncommon for males to lose themselves to the night, last year seven woman were found dead. Brutalized.
You swallow, heart beating so loud, so fast, itâs all you can hear. It drowns everything out.Â
I donât want to do this.Â
You donât hear the horn blow. You only know it did when everyone around you began heading through the woodline. You almost trip over yourself as you dash forward. You had to run. You had to hide before the second horn blew. You had to make it till dawn.Â
Your bare feet donât feel the sharp rocks and sticks that stab into them. Adrenaline fills your body, pumping through your blood, and muscles. Blocking out the pain.
The shimmering barrier is what makes you come to a stop. Youâd never seen them before, the wards that kept your community safe, but there was no denying it. That wall of energy was where your colony ended. Â
Beyond it, death was inevitable.Â
There was no hope in flying, male wings are much different from females. Stiffer, sharper, stronger, the males would always be superior in the sky.Â
So you stay on the ground hiding in a nearby thicket just on the edge of the wards. Arms hugging your knees to your panting chest, making yourself as small as possible.Â
You hoped nobody would search this far. But you knew the males in your community. They stop at nothing and do anything to get what they want. Â
When a distant scream echoed through the woods you knew youâd missed the second horn. The males were already hunting.Â
You hold yourself tighter, trying to force slow breaths in your nose and out of your mouth. Frantically trying to slow down your palpitating heart. But it felt like you werenât getting air. Your whole body was shivering from the adrenaline, that pressure still building.Â
You would get found by the sound of your breathing if you kept it up. Â
âNo! Ple-!â Your head snaps in the direction of the scream, much closer than the other one. You try not to think about how it cut off so suddenly, about what couldâve happened to her. What couldâve made her object to a male.
You just need to make it till dawn. Just need to keep hiding. For six more hours.Â
It was hopeless, there wasnât nearly enough ground to give the women a fighting chance. The men greatly outnumber the women, making the former even more desperate, even more competitive.
Where was the fun if everyone had a chance at winning?
No, they had to yearn for it. It was what made the Ritual work.Â
Your head falls to your knees.Â
You donât want to end up like your mother.
Three years ago your father had grown tired of her, he participated in that yearâs Flowering and never spoke to either of you again. As your mother is far from pure, she can not be used in the ceremonies. Instead, she was made a community whore.Â
A female for the pent up males who had no luck on Flowering to fuck as they please.Â
Your mother always said it was necessary. That all the things your people did, there were reasons for. Â
That Flowering Night was a gift, it provided the magic that grew our blooms. The blooms that supplied our only food source. Nectar.Â
Of course, you believed her, youâd never known any reason not to. The Middle wasnât a resourceful place. It was too dangerous to send hunters beyond the wards, and there werenât even any animals to hunt. Only other monsters. And even they werenât worth hunting. Bodies usually emaciated with no meat on their bones if any at all.Â
It was necessary, but that didnât mean you wanted to do it.Â
You wouldnât know until much later that your people were just addicts. That hunting wasnât an impossible thing, not when they had wings. That they couldâve flown to the Day Court to hunt, or even the Winter Court, but they chose not to. Because nothing could ever compare to their precious Nectar.Â
Snap.Â
Your blood runs cold as an older male sniffs around. Fifteen feet from you. His hard wings make a low buzz as they vibrate against each other with frustration.
The male was a brute, muscle stacked upon bulging muscle.Â
You hold your breath as he slowly gets closer, the buzz becoming louder. If he caught your scent, no amount of shrubbery could keep him from finding you.Â
He gets closer, and your heart pounds faster. That pressure you feel under your skin now throbbing. Pulsating.
Heâs almost ten feet away, if he got any closer heâd undoubtedly smell the fear that left your body in waves.
White dots started filling your vision. You fight with your body to hold it.Â
A blessing came in the form of a scream, this one even closer than the last. Your throat constricts trying to force air into your system. Your teeth ache from how tightly you clench your jaw.
The male started in that direction. Your throat burned, your head pounding.Â
Just a second more.
But you couldnât stop yourself from gasping for air.Â
The male stops. Then he looks right at you.
Youâd never known terror till that moment.Â
*****WARNING: until the next scene change dark themes will be depicted such as rape and violence, if you do not wish to read proceed to the next â*****â
He pounced, dragging you out of the bushes by the base of your wings. Even though you donât struggle.
He throws you to the ground, not wasting a second before straddling your thighs. Pinning down your legs. His hands grip the fabric of your gown, tearing it off your shoulder. You want to cover your body, but instead you lay still. Let him run his filthy hands over your breasts, let them squirm their way between your legs.Â
You let him cause itâs all youâve ever known.Â
Even though your mind was screaming.
He is anything but gentle, forcing his way inside, digging around. You canât stop the cry of pain that leaves you, the tears that fill your eyes, and he moans. Touch becoming rougher, harsher, trying to force another cry from you.Â
The pain becomes worse when he adds more fingers, shoving his way though.Â
Like he was trying to rip you open.
His head buries into your shoulder. Sniffing and groaning in your ear. Rutting against you like a wild animal.
Then he bites down, and you scream.Â
Your hands find his head and that pressure, that jerking energy under your skin devours him.Â
The male collapses, body twitching on top of you. Teeth still embedded in your shoulder. You're stunned for a moment, but that's quickly replaced with revulsion.
Your arms shake with the effort it takes to roll him off of you. Whimpering when his teeth slowly leave your shoulder.Â
His hands don't leave you, even though he was now out of reaching distance you could still feel them. Touching, grabbing, digging.
You feel nothing but disgust as you look at the male, watching him mumble, whine, and mewl in his unconscious state. You donât even get the time to question it, to think about what happened. The heavy footsteps that head your way get closer by the second.Â
I donât want to do this.Â
So you donât.Â
For once in your life you disregard all of your teachings. Every rule beaten into you. Each false instinct thatâd burrowed into your body. And you run. Â
Right past the wards.Â
Because youâd rather die than end up like your mother.
You run and you keep running until your lungs are stabbed with pain, until your legs give out from beneath you, and you crash to the ground. Â
Your nails dig into the soil as you lay there. To breathe. To think. To cry.Â
Maybe you could just wait here till dawn. Maybe then you could go back. Nobody would have to know you even left.Â
But the chill of the crooked woods laugh at you. You hear the sound of old trees creaking in the wind, calling you foolish.Â
You couldnât go back, youâd attacked a male. There was nowhere for you now, just death.
Still, there was a senseless part of your brain that hoped this was all a wretched night terror. That any minute now you would wake up to your momâs voice. And you would be in bed. And Flowering will have already passed. And you wouldnât have went because your mom knew you didnât want to. And she wouldnât have wanted you to go through it either, because of how ruthless the males were. And your life would go on until the next year came around. And maybe then you would be ready. Maybe then you would have accepted it.
The other part of your brain was ready to be done with it all.
â[name]?âÂ
Your breath catches, unsteadily lifting yourself from the ground. You look around, searching for that familiar voice.Â
 âMother?âÂ
â[name], my childâŚâ You see her. She was completely bare, something you were used to, her beauty a stark contrast to the spindly trees around her. She walks toward you crouching before you, you sob when she rests a soft hand on your cheek. So, so different from how she usually held you. Then she spoke in such a soft voice, a tone youâd never heard leave her mouth. âYou looked so beautiful when you were screaming.âÂ
The next moment it felt like you were punched in the shoulder, a heat unlike any other burned your skin. You look down to see a blade sticking out of your chest, a shriveled-up hand attached. Not the smooth skin of your mother.
When you look back into your mother's eyes they were no longer hers. Replaced with a milky white that gleamed in the moonlight. The face no longer female or beautiful. Itâs skin was stretched taught over its thin bones.
Then as it spoke again with a smile so wide, teeth so rotted, and breath so pungent you knew what it was.Â
âCry for me, child.â It said, sounding like a million different voices at once.Â
A creature that preyed on the weak, found pleasure in the act of killing. It cannot be reasoned with, its only joy is to watch the life leave someoneâs eyes. To watch people die a sad miserable death in the form of the ones they loved the most.
The Mymic. Â
You scream, and it laughs. You scream louder as it twists the blade inside you and then drags. Ripping each nerve, muscle, and vein as slowly as possible. So you could feel each and every tear.
The creature howled in ecstasy as it tore into you, cutting you open endlessly.Â
No one would save you, not this time.Â
Nightmares donât have happy endings.Â
âSo beautifulâŚâ It sighed pulling the blade out of your chest only to play with the blood that pooled out, finger-painting your white gown red.Â
*****
He couldnât stand it, you were so still that Azriel had to keep making sure you were breathing. He holds you against him, unable to keep his hands from wandering, soothing you. Shadows doing the same.Â
Youâd been sleeping for two days straight. Madja kept assuring him and everyone else that you were okay. That it was a good thing, that your body was responding well to the tonic and catching up on the sleep it needed.Â
The Faebane had cleaned out of your system after the first twenty-four hours. But no Hybern soldiers made any appearance, no evil king, not even a flicker in the fae lights.
His head leans against yours, watching your chest lift up and down. He moves a hand to rest there, watching it rise and fall. Finding comfort in the repetitive motion.
Maybe you werenât made for him. Maybe the cauldron didnât deem you mates. Maybe he didnât care.
Azriel was content to just share something so real with you, so raw.Â
A bond didnât make what the two of you had any less intense. He didnât need to be tethered to you to know what you were feeling. Didnât need fate to tell him you were the love of his life.Â
Heâd always pick you. Â
A small sound reaches his ears, he was so worried about you that heâd started having audio hallucinations. But then he heard it again, louder this time, and he knew it wasnât a figment of his imagination.
Your breathing becomes irregular, another little noise leaving your parted lips. Azrielâs hands rub you soothingly. Waiting patiently for the sleep to fade from your body. Whispering when he could tell you were conscious enough to hear him. âHey.â He drawls, making sure he's quiet. When you open your gorgeous eyes and look at him his heart stops. âThere you are.âÂ
You blink at him. âYou drugged me.âÂ
Azriel flinches at the words. Actually flinches. Then he nods.Â
âMy magic⌠I can feel it now but it wasâŚâÂ
His hand reaches for yours, feeling relief when you let him take it. He runs his thumb over the smooth skin. âFaebane. We got some when Rhys was captured.âÂ
You look down at your free hand, willing a small moth to appear there. Checking that everything was working correctly. The moth flies up toward Azriel but it dissipates before it can get far.
You werenât mad. Quite the opposite. Youâd woken up and found yourself relieved. Relieved to see him there next to you. Relieved to be home.Â
You werenât angry because you knew he did it to help not to hurt. Sure, he couldâve gone about it in a different way, maybe presented the idea to you instead of just slipping the drug in your water. But you couldnât fault him for that either, Azriel was a man of action and few words.Â
Still that didnât stop you from asking. âWhy didnât you just tell me?âÂ
âI didnât even want to agree to it at first. So little is known about your kind, your magic, there was no telling if the Faebane would even effect you. I didnât want to risk you getting stuck in that nightmare without the ability to heal.âÂ
Your eyes widen at the information. If heâd told you that, nothing wouldâve gotten you to agree. But he took that chance? Azriel wasnât a gambler.Â
Your face mustâve shown what you were thinking because he continued.Â
âThen you hurt yourself and I couldnât take it anymore, [name]. You needed to get better.â He squeezes your hand. âIf I have to fight off a living nightmare so you can get a night's sleep, I will.â
âDid you?â You ask, wondering if the male had made an appearance or the Mymic.Â
Azriel shakes his head. You sigh in relief. Ignoring the way your stomach grumbled with hunger, in no hurry to force down tasteless food. No hurry to leave your male. You lay your head on his chest.
âIâm sorry.â You say, and he shakes his head at you in confused questioning. âFor letting it get that far.â For not being strong enough to get a grip.Â
The shadowsinger holds your head to his chest. âIâm sorry.â He presses his lips against your head, saying the words into your hair. âI wish I knew other ways to help.âÂ
Your hands grip him. Nails clinging to his bare skin. âI missed you.â The worst part about reliving that Nightmare, was that you hadnât known he existed. That someone so amazing was out there, and capable of loving you.Â

can be read as a standalone, but without some context from pt.1 things might become confusing
synopsis: your need to help gets you into trouble
Warnings: strong(?) hints of sexual activities, minor angst, minor violence, fluff
pt. 1 | pt.3
Â
In the corner of his eye, he can see you picking at your fingers. Your sharp nails do unnecessary damage to your fragile hands.Â
He knew you were worried for Feyre, ever since sheâd been taken to the spring court youâd been on edge.Â
It went beyond a loyal subject worrying about her High Lady. You fretted for Feyre like you would Amren, or Rhys, or Mor, or Cassian.
Though it was endearing in a way, Azriel didnât like the way that worry manifested. The way you unknowingly damaged yourself. Your bottom lip was split open from gnawing on it, the skin on your fingers was peeled back and inflamed, and dark circles found their place under your eyes from sleepless nights. Unable to really rest when your friend was in the jaws of the spring beast.Â
His shadows reach for you, demanding to be with you.Â
He let a few of them loose, watching as they traveled to you instantly. One settled at your hands, weaving between each of your fingers and curling around your wrist. Another rested on your shoulder, brushing your face. The others couldnât decide where to settle, traveling over your body frantically as they tried to comfort you.Â
The shadowsinger was about to pull them back, but as soon as they felt his pull they settled in whichever place they could. Nuzzling against you. Desperate to stay with you, comfort you.Â
Azriel found it amusing, and so utterly relatable.Â
He forces his attention back to the papers on his desk. Which was more than a struggle.
It was an impossible task, staring at building diagrams and reading reports from his spies, when the most magnificent woman heâd ever known sat not three feet from him.Â
Then he felt your eyes on him, and he knew there was no point even trying. He wouldnât be able to focus.Â
He meets your gaze and arches a perfect brow.Â
You wanted to ask him something. That much was obvious. But you hesitated, you didnât know if he would say yes.Â
âWhat is it?âÂ
You glanced down at your hands, then up at him, then back down at your hands. âMay I go see Rhys?â Your voice is small as you ask. Â
When you heard the shadowsinger sigh you knew what the answer would be.Â
Azriel ran a hand through his hair as he watched you.
You had been asking that a lot recently, and at first he allowed it. He saw no harm in you sitting with his brother, helping him when he needed help, listening when he checked in on Feyre through their bond. He knew his brother didnât mind, he understood your anxiety and shared it with you tenfold. But Rhysand had a lot to deal with, so for that reason, Azriel shook his head.Â
âRhys is very busy.â He starts, extending an open hand toward you. Smile tugging at his lips when you walk around the desk and place your hand in his. âFeyre is strong, she can handle herself.â He assures you as he pulls you to stand between his legs, letting his hands soothe your body. Letting his shadows join him.
But he can tell by how tense you were that his assurance wasnât helping.Â
His fingers thread through your hair. âYou want to help Feyre, is that it?â His thumb brushed over your jaw as you nod. âWhy donât you pay her sisters a visit? Iâm sure that would ease some of her stress, to know that youâre there for them like you were for her.âÂ
He watched some light enter your eyes and almost smiled in victory. You were so enthralled with the idea, you tried to run out of his office to visit them right at that moment. He caught you, pulling you back against him until you sat in his lap. âTomorrow.â He breathed.Â
You leaned into him, coaxed by his hands. Sighing as his mouth plants wet kisses down your neck, shivering when you feel his tongue come out to lick over your pulse.
Azriel let himself get lost in you. In feeling you against him. In bathing in your scent.Â
He doesnât let himself second guess his suggestion, even though there was a very reasonable voice in his head that was kicking him. A voice that berated him for being so foolish. That screamed to just let you see Rhys. That begged to keep you far, far away from Nesta Acheron.
But that voice is drowned out by his need for you.Â
He groans when you turn around in his lap, straddling him, shimmering black dress riding up your thighs. His hands immediately find purchase on them, squeezing. While yours tangle in his hair.
You pant, lips parted as your eyes run over him. Stopping at his lips, his eyes, his mouth, his neck, the hands that squeezed your thighs when you looked at them. You were mesmerized by him.Â
You needed him. Gods, you needed him.
He kissed you like a starved beast. You moaned when his tongue brushed over the roof of your mouth, eliciting a hum from him. His hands slid up to your hips so he could grind you against him, hiking your dress up with them.Â
You feel him harden beneath you.
âWhat do you want?â He asks against your lips, kissing them again, then kissing along your jaw, and then kissing back down your neck. Latching on to the spot that had your hands gripping his hair, your thighs tightening around his hips.Â
âIâŚâ You try, but words wonât form, only sounds.Â
He parts with your neck to lean his head against yours. Looking in your eyes. Pulling back a bit when you move to kiss him. Hands now holding your hips still against him, torturing you with the feeling of him pressed against you.
Your eyes plead with him, your sharp nails almost digging into his scalp as you lost yourself, and he canât stop the smirk of pure satisfaction from spreading across his face. âTell me what you want.â
You shudder when you feel him twitch underneath you. âPlease.â His hands squeeze your hips. âPlease. Use me.âÂ
The groan that left his mouth had to be the most sinful thing youâd ever heard. Â
*****
Anxiety chews on your mind, spits it out, and chews it back up again. You wring your shaking hands.Â
Before you was the door that separated you from the Acheron sisters.Â
You knew of them, knew what they were like from what Feyre had told you. And now that you were thinking about it, you didnât want to help them. Not for their sake.Â
But for Feyre⌠Youâd started coming to terms with the fact that youâd do just about anything for her.Â
However, that didnât stop your heart from beating so fast you were afraid it would fail.
Azrielâs hands rest on your upper arms and he leans down to your ear. âBreathe.â You absentmindedly lean into him, relishing in the feeling of his lips brushing your ear. His breath fanning across your cheek.
âIf you canât handle this weâll go back.â He says, making it very obvious that he wouldnât mind curling back up in bed with you. You exhale a shaky breath as his hand slowly slides over your breast, your nipple hardens under the silky fabric of your dress and he traces it with his finger. You were seriously debating it.Â
But your need to help in some way, to do something useful wins.Â
âI can handle it.â You say, sounding not at all sure of yourself.Â
But he listens, moving his hands to rest back on your arms. Thumbs drawing calm circles.Â
You give yourself a moment to breathe. Leaning your head back against his chest. Feeling your stomach flip when his lips press against your head.
When you were finally ready he opened the door for you. You took one more futile deep breath, all the air in the world wouldnât be able to tame your emotions, then walked in with a friendly smile plastered on your face.Â
You immediately wished youâd accepted his offer to go back to bed when the harsh eyes of the oldest Acheron sister settled on you. There was no mistaking who was who.Â
âWhat are you?âÂ
Her words were like a physical blow. Her voice, colder than ice. You step back bumping into Azrielâs chest. Â
He rests a hand on your shoulder as if to say, we can still go back. But youâd made your choice, you were here to offer your help. If they didnât want it, then fine, but you would still offer it.
âA friend,â You manage to say. Her cruel gaze felt like a physical weight on your being. So scrutinizing, so full of hate. Itâd been a while since someone cast eyes like that your way. Azriel had been careful to make sure of that. âOf Feyreâs.âÂ
Her stare narrows on you. Drinking you in. You watch her gaze snag on your pointed teeth. You close your mouth. Whatever you were about to say dying in your throat.Â
âSome friend.âÂ
Azriel glared at Nesta, the warning clear on his face. Say no more. He puts a hand on your lower back, guiding you to where the other sister sat, on a chair in front of a window.Â
The weight of Nesta's stare never left you.
But when you see Elaine, all of it ceases to matter.
All thoughts left your brain. Not unlike how you got sometimes with Azrielâwhen all the pleasure became too muchâbut also completely different. It wasnât Azriel guiding you now.Â
It was what lived inside you, the writhing magic that was always thrumming under your skin.Â
Your brain doesnât register how the girl looks, hollow; as if someone scooped all the life out of her. Your brain doesnât register a thing except the irresistible pull.Â
You could feel it, or her, calling to you. Beckoning you closer.Â
You couldnât refuse.Â
When your mind came back to your body, you stood directly in front of Elaine. Your palm cupping her face.Â
Then you felt something awful slither into your head. It slipped through the crevices of your mental barriers and crawled into a dark corner of your mind. Hiding from you, even though you could feel it watching.
Nausea overcame you. You snatch your hand back like she burned you. Shuffling back toward Azriel who looked at you with concern.
Then Elaine's eyes closed. Nesta rushed to her sister as she went unconscious. Almost falling out of her chair. The older Acheron managed to catch her in time with help from Azrielâs shadows.Â
You turned to Azriel. âI want to go.â Your words barely a whisper.
His eyes widen when he sees the fear on your face. The horror. His shadows encompass you, providing your body with a cover, a shield.Â
âWhat did you do?!â Nesta shouted through pants of fatigue, having just lugged her sister to bed. You gripped Azrielâs shirt and he held you close to him as he led you out. Away from the screaming woman. âWhat did you do to my sister?!âÂ
*****Â
âWhat happened?âÂ
You swallowed at your High Lord, glancing at Azriel. For what? You didnât know. Help? Comfort maybe? Whatever it may be you didnât receive it. All you got was a nod in Rhysandâs direction.Â
So you turn back, struggling to find your words under his serious gaze. Not harsh, but very, very serious. âI donât know. She looked so tired⌠I justâIt felt like she was calling to me.â Trying not to think about that thing you could still feel hiding. Still, feel looking at you with eyes you couldnât see.
He waved for you to continue.Â
âSheâs fine.â You say, and somehow find yourself completely sure of those words. Though you had watched her pass out with your own eyes. Knew it was your doing.Â
âHow do you know that? This is different. Even Azriel said heâs never seen you do something like that before.â You look down at your hands, picking at the already torn skin.Â
You donât dare look up when you feel Rhys rise from his seat. Feel him walk around his desk until heâs in front of you. It's when he speaks that you feel the need to meet his stare.
He holds a hand over your head. âMay I?âÂ
Azriel steps forward. Looking as if he were about to protest. Rhys shoots him a look that makes him stop.Â
Rhys needed to know what happened, to make sure you didn't harm his mate's sister. The bond took control of his instincts. Your word wouldn't suffice.
Youâd never deny your High Lord a request. Never deny any of your friends a request. You never had before, Azriel always had to step in and do it for you.Â
So when you stiffly shook your head no, well, to say they were shocked would be an understatement.
Your whole body was tense as if just the act of refusing took everything out of you. Required every bone, every muscle, and every bit of air in your body.
But you couldnât risk that thing infecting Rhys. Not when you didnât know what it was. Not when you could feel its hungry stare.Â
You held your breath until Rhysandâs hand dropped to his side.
Your felt physically ill. The weight of what you just did settling on you. You stiffly turned to Azriel.
âI want to go.â You said for the second time that day.Â
Azrielâs brows dipped as he looked at you, worry covering his features. His shadows were restless, flicking with agitation as they too struggled to see you so bothered.Â
He glances at Rhys but the High Lord gives him a look of sympathy. âI need to speak with you.âÂ
The shadowsingerâs jaw clenched. Wanting nothing more than to refuse, to point out the state you were in even though it was as clear as day.Â
But he couldnât say no to his brother, not after all heâd done for them.Â
He walks you to the office door, turning you to face him before you can leave. He leaned down and pressed a tender kiss to your head. His words were nothing but breath against your ear. A whisper for only you to hear. âGo to bed. Iâll join you soon.â But you didn't walk away, looking unsure, nervous. âGo.âÂ
Your only consolation, as you left, were the shadows that parted with him and linked with you.Â
Once you were far enough down the hall the High Lord spoke. âWhat was she thinking?â He paced in front of his desk. âShe knows her magic is dangerous⌠did she even read those books Helion sent?â He swallowed as he remembered the limited information those three books had, the only books that made any mention of dreamwalkers.Â
âOf course, she read them, you asked her too.â Azriel said, bite in his tone. Making Rhys sigh and stop his pacing. The High Lord sends an apologetic look to his brother as he sits on the front of his desk. âShe wasnât thinking,â Azriel says after a few moments of silence.Â
Rhys raised a brow, silently telling him to elaborate.Â
The shadowsinger leans back, remembering that look on your face. A look heâd seen many times, but never in a public setting, and you never moved on your own. âShe was in a trance.â
âElaine couldâve done something to her.â Rhys thinks aloud, making Azriel straighten.Â
Did she curse you? They still had no idea what gifts the cauldron bestowed upon the Acheron sisters. The last thing he wanted was for you to be on the receiving end of those gifts.Â
Both Illyrian men sat in worry.Â
âIâm sorry, I suggested she visit them. I thought maybe sheâd click with them like she did Feyre.â Azriel says, running a hand down his face.Â
Rhys shook his head. âDonât be sorry. I know she wants to help. And not everyone can be as charming as Feyre.â At that, the brothers shared a strained smile.Â
âHow is she?âÂ
Rhys let out a deep breath as he picked imaginary lint off his clothes. âAlive.âÂ
Azriel couldnât imagine how heâd act if you were in enemy territory, the thought making him tense, body itching to be near you. Heâd die before heâd let that happen.Â
âSheâll be home soon.â Azriel offers Rhys the words of comfort, even though they wouldn't do much.
Before Rhys could reply shadows scurried under the door rushing to Azriel.
The shadowsingerâs face went pale at their whispers. He shot up from his seat. â[name].âÂ
Then a loud bang was heard followed by a scream of bloody murder.Â
The two males were rushing out of the room and running through the halls of the house within a split second. Somewhere along the way Cassian had joined them, shirtless and sweaty. Having rushed out of the training room the moment he heard the bang.
More bangs sound, but none as loud as the first one. And no more screams follow. Â
Azriel found himself wishing for you to scream. If you were screaming you were breathing.Â
He burst through the door of your shared chambers, almost knocking it down. He didn't stop to stare at the sight before him like his brothers did. There was no time to pause, not when you were being shoved into the tub by Hybern soldiers, their jagged nails gashing your beautiful skin. Their faces were unnatural and barely formed. Some were faceless, just flat skin and dark empty holes where their eyes and mouths should've been.Â
Stood behind you was the disfigured form of the King of Hybern himself. His body was reconstructed by the nightmare, making his fae features more monstrous. More fitting for his character.
The evil king's smile stretched from ear to ear as you thrashed under the cold water.Â
Azriel shoved his way through, ripping you from their arms and dragging you out of the tub. But the soldiers didnât stop. Still reaching for you with their long slender fingers.Â
Tears flowed from your closed eyes, your body twitching and shaking as you were tortured both in your mind and outside it.Â
âRhys!â Azriel shouted springing the High Lord into action. He rushed over, dodging the grabbing arms before setting both hands on either side of your head and forcing you to wake.Â
Your eyes snapped open, gulping in as much air as possible. The figures dissipated into thin air. Like a flame being snuffed out.Â
You squirmed away from the hands of your High Lord. Pushing against the firm body you adored so much.
You grabbed Azriel, holding him tight. So tight he wouldnât be able to leave you again. Too afraid to worry about your bare body and the fact that both Cassian and Rhysand could see. Too afraid to notice the other person who stood at the doorway with wide eyes. Too afraid to do anything but hold him.
âShhh. Iâm here now. Iâm here.â He held you tighter as your body shook with silent sobs. âIâm here. Iâm here.âÂ
You know what happened now. What that thing was. Gripping Azriel tighter as the knowledge weighed on your brain.Â
You tensed when he lifted your shivering body into the outstretched towel Cassian held. Azriel pulls you close to him when you recoil away from his brother's gentle touch.
Cassian watched Azriel wrap the towel around you. Heart heavy as you clung to his brother. A look of pure dread etched on your face, accompanied by a stream of never-ending tears.Â
Youâre vaguely aware of Rhys rummaging through your drawers in the background. Vaguely aware of Azriel lifting you once more. Cradling you against him as he carried you to the bed.Â
He took the medical supplies from Rhys and then asked his brothers to leave. They hesitantly obliged, taking the shocked Nesta Acheron with them and closing the slightly damaged door.
He lays you down on the bed, backing up a bit to open the first aid kit but you lurch for him. Arms tightening around his neck.Â
âIâm not going anywhere.â He says, wishing he never had to say such words to you. âIâm right here with you.â Feeling his chest split in half when you reluctantly let him go. Bottom lip quivering.Â
His hands are softer than usual as they patch you up. Frown deepening at every single scratch, and bruise he saw. His fingers brush over an already forming bruise on your waist. Bile rose in his throat as the image of those horrid hands grabbing and piercing your smooth skin filled his mind.
âI took it from her.âÂ
Your broken confession drew his attention away from the bruise and to your scared eyes. He felt helpless as he stared into them, he should've never left you. He cradled your face, thumbing away your tears only for more to take their place. He brushed those away too.Â

pt.2 | pt.3
One of the first friends Feyre made in the Night Court was you. You reminded her of the twin wraiths in a way. Never saying much, if anything at all. Maybe that was one of the reasons she liked you so much.Â
You didnât need to talk to enjoy each otherâs presence. Feyre had as much fun sitting in silence with you as she did on a night out with Mor.Â
But as time passed, as Feyre became a constant in the Night Court, she had grown curious. She wanted to know more about you like she did the others.Â
So she started asking you questions, and to her surprise, you would answer her. Your answers werenât clipped, or vague. You never sounded annoyed with her, you were completely open and honest with her.Â
âHow long have you known everyone?â Feyre had asked while you gently played with her hair, her scalp tingling at your touch.Â
You thought about it for a moment. âOver two hundred years now.âÂ
She tilts her head, so apart from her you were the newest member of the inner circle. âHow did you meet?â She asks, shivering as the tingles travel down her spine.
You start braiding a few small strands from the front of her face as you speak. âMy kind are far different from other Fae.â Feyre practically perks up at the words. She knew you werenât high fae but she never bothered saying anything about it, she barely even noticed it most of the time not nearly enough to warrant a discussion. âThey hail from no court, and bow to no lord, not even the Mother is with their thoughts.â
Feyre tried to imagine what that would be like, how they would act, what traditions theyâd carry. She thought of your features, the ones that stood out among other high fae. Your ears didnât point, your nails were like claws, and your teeth bore long sharp canines on both the top and bottom of your mouth, but the features that stood out the most were the ones you kept hidden.Â
Feyre saw them once, your wings. The first time she met you. Like they were just there for a formal introduction. They were big, beautiful, and intricate. They looked like moth wings, and fluttered like them too. Opening and closing slowly when you were lax.
Immediately when Feyre saw them, she felt like painting again, she could barely keep her eyes off them, barely keep herself from reaching out a hand to touch them. Maybe that was the reason for their absence in the next visit; all that remained of the glorious appendages was precise ink that lined the whole of your back, a tattoo of folded wings.Â
From the way they folded, they almost formed a natural cape. She wondered how far your tattoo ran, the extravagant fabrics of the dresses you wore only showed so much.Â
She pictured a whole colony of people that looked like you and immediately felt like painting again.
âItâs why nobody can do anything about their backward ways, they listen to nobody but themselves. Believe no one but themselves.â All preconceived thoughts of your people turn sour with your words.Â
âThe things theyâve done, they still doâŚâ You release a shaky breath as you finish the small braids and set them aside.
Feyre turns to look at you when your delicate hands part with her hair. She finds you sorting through a box of hair ornaments, but your eyes are clouded. Not even the most glorious of diamonds could shine through that fog. âYou donât have to...âÂ
You blink out of your daze and wave her off as you pull out a few gem-encrusted pins and show them to her. Waiting for her to give you a nod of approval before pulling out a stunning bejeweled silver comb and repeating the same process. Your collection was truly marvelous.Â
âWhen I was saved, it was my first Flowering Night.â You spoke the words with barely concealed bitterness. âA night where all mature unpaired females are sent into the woods for any participating males to hunt down and take as they please.âÂ
You tuck back the small braids with the sparkling pins. Feyre listened as you continued, she wanted to say something but what would she say?
âNo one could run very far from our community, the woods of the Middle hold no mercy. It was either hide and hope you make it till dawn without being spotted by a male. Or die to the other horrid creatures that live in those woods.âÂ
Feyreâs heart ached for you, her sorrow a tangible thing able to be smelt in the air. And you squeezed her shoulder, you comforted her. Her sorrow only increased. You never deserved any of it.
âI chose the latter.â You carefully place the comb into her hair, finding it in yourself to smile at the final product. You still fiddle with a few strands until you feel pleased. âA close encounter with death led to the discovery of my gift,âÂ
Dreamwalker, Rhys had called you. An ability so rare even Helionâs exquisite library had very little information on it.Â
Feyre loosely understood that you could enter another person's dream. Could manipulate it as you wish, to serenity or to a blood-curdling nightmare. But what made you so powerful, what made you such a valuable asset to the Night Court was your ability to bring dreams to life. All manner of dreams.Â
However, your ability was sparsely used for court matters, and only necessary people knew of it. You were their trump card. Something nobody would see coming.Â
Feyre would never forget the time you had a nightmare, sending half the court in preparation for battle. Sheâd also never forget the way Azriel had fought off the nightmare incarnate to get to you. How he charged forward without an ounce of hesitation. While Rhys had stood protectively in front of Feyre, and Cassianâs siphons flared from beside her, providing a shield around them.
Feyre had realized then that Azriel would go to hell and back for you.Â
Feyre turns to face you, to look you in your enchanting eyes now that you are finished playing with her hair. âI was barely a woman, I didnât know the first thing about defending myself. I didnât know what this gift was.â She watched you raise a hand, small stars forming and trailing your fingers, blinking and shimmering as you played with them. âWhat good is a gift this powerful if you donât know what to do with it? Itâs as good as a broken blade.âÂ
Feyreâs breath leaves her body when you pull down the shoulder of your elegant emerald gown, revealing a long jagged scar running diagonally across your chest. The skin puffed up from how deep the gash was. âI wouldâve died if it werenât for Azriel.âÂ
The high faeâs eyebrows raise ever so slightly.Â
âHe heard me screaming. And he came for me.â You pull the shoulder back up and smile. Actually, smile. Feyre had never known someone like you, someone able to flip such a horrid memory around. Someone so able to pick out the good amongst the bad. âIt wasnât until a century later that I finally accepted his invitation to the Night Court and met everyone else.â
Feyre found herself grabbing your hand and squeezing. So grateful you had accepted his invitation.Â
You squeeze back.Â
âYouâre so strong.â Feyre says, furrowing her brows when you laugh like she had told a joke.Â
âIt wasnât strength that led me here, Feyre.â You tell her. Once again she wanted to paint you, but she felt like she wouldnât be able to do you justice. âIt was fate.â
A knock sounds at the door.Â
âCome in.â Feyre calls and you both look to the opening door. Two incredibly attractive Illyrian men stand at the doorway.Â
Rhys smiles at the sight of you two, eyes raking over the hairstyle youâd given Feyre. âYou look lovely, Feyre darling.â Her face heats as you smile in triumph.Â
âSay goodnight.â Comes Azrielâs voice in that tone he only used on you.Â
You obey his command without a second thought, giving Feyre a light hug and giving Rhys a small bow before scurrying toward Azrielâs waiting arm.Â
You fall into step with him as his hand lands on your lower back. But before the two of you could disappear you tug on his shirt, prompting him to stop only long enough for you to turn back toward Feyre and say a final goodnight. âDream well Feyre!â Then he continued leading you away to your shared chambers.Â
The mated pair watch you two travel away. Rhys with a look of content for you and his brother. Feyre with a new curiosity.Â
She couldnât help but be curious about the dynamic you and Azriel had. The way that dynamic bled into the interactions you had with your friends. How you always asked for permission before doing something and always jumped up whenever anyone asked you to do something. Rhys seemed to catch on to that curiosity.Â
He decided to save you the embarrassment of Feyre asking you herself. He had enough of an understanding of you to know when something would make you uncomfortable, no matter how much you said otherwise.Â
Youâd always answer any questions asked of you openly and honestly, whether you wanted to or not. It was one of the reasons many were at first against your visits with Feyre, himself included. The newly turned fae was far too oblivious to your situation to recognize when she was taking advantage of your obedience. But you assured Rhysand repeatedly that Feyre never bothered you with her questions. That you enjoyed her presence just as much as she, hopefully, enjoyed yours.Â
Much to everyoneâs delight, Feyre regarded you with gentleness and awe from the very start. It was the effect you had on people. It was the reason Azriel didnât put up a fight about leaving your visits unsupervised.
â[name] was raised by cruel people, they taught her that in a relationship the male's word is law. Her people think a female is expected to give up any and all control to her male. Itâs one of the few things she never was able to condition herself out of, Azriel helps her by providing that control she needs.âÂ
Feyre thinks about that, face heating at the images it created. She wondered what that would be like, to surrender herself completely. âSo if he told her to jump off the nearest bridgeâŚ?âÂ
âSheâd do it, with zero hesitation.âÂ
Rhys smirks, knowing glint in his eyes as his gaze runs over the blush that coated her face.Â
âBut heâd never ask something like that of her. He knows her inside out, knows when something is too much or not enough.â He steps closer to her, delighting in the way her breathing picks up. âIf I didnât know any better Iâd think your interest in this topic was more than innocent curiosity.âÂ
âWell, do you?â Feyre asks, making his eyes narrow. âKnow any better?âÂ
Rhysâs gaze becomes dark. âNope.âÂ
****
âDid you enjoy your time with Feyre?â You sigh at his voice, the comfort it brings you. You find yourself leaning into him, and he allows it.Â
âIt was nice.â You say truly. It felt like it was easier to breathe now that Feyre had more of an understanding. âShe asked about how we met.âÂ
The hand on your back pulls you closer to him as if he were remembering that day. Remembering what you looked like as that hideous creature held you down, slicing into you. The way you flinched away from him after heâd slayed the creature. The sheer dress that you wore, If it could even be called that. He could still picture everything so vividly.Â
How you eventually submitted to him, and how that made him sick. How he carried you out of the Middle and into the lands of the Night Court, never taking you into the cities. How for the next century after that he would visit you at the little private cabin only he and his brothers knew about, how he took care of you, and how he grew to love you. How you grew to love him in return.
He shoves those thoughts into the back of his mind as he opens the door to your shared chambers, walking you inside before shutting the door behind you.Â
His hands move to your shoulders while he guides you to sit on the edge of the large bed, big enough to fit at least three winged beings. Hands brushing down your body as he kneels before you, settling on your ankle. He brings your foot up and rests it on his thigh before slowly unraveling the straps of your heel. Once finished he continued with the right heel, his touch nothing but confident from years and years of practice.Â
A hand pats your thigh, letting you know heâs finished. Your eyes trail him as he heads toward the bathroom, youâd be happy to just look at him for the rest of your immortal life.Â
You help Azriel, though he had no problem doing it for you, by taking off your jewelry one by one, setting each extravagant piece on the nightstand. By the time you're done Azrielâs waiting for you next to a full bath.
âCome.â He beckons from beside the large clawfoot tub. Hand outstretched and waiting for you.Â
You saunter toward him, sighing as you let your brain just rest. Let him do everything for you.Â
His hands are strong, and gentle, and secure all in one as they guide you out of your gown, his clothes following not long after. You sigh as he brings you into the tub. Positioning you so you sat between his legs, back to his front.Â
Your eyelids slowly fall shut, coaxed by his soothing touch. Feeling nothing but content when he pushed your head back to lay on his shoulder, a gentle kiss pressed against your temple.
You were soon in a state of barely there, just teetering on the side of sleep but awake enough to move when he told you to.Â
âLean forward.â
His hands rub up and down your back, cleaning and massaging the skin there. You shudder in pleasure and he hums soothingly. Like cooing at a pet. You straighten up a bit when he taps the marked skin a few times, moving forward just enough for your wings to slowly peel away from your back. What was once ink on your skin, now real moving wings.Â
âSpread.â And you do so, wings unfolding and stretching out completely.Â
You shiver as his hands brush against them, making them twitch both away and toward him. As if they couldnât decide whether the feeling it brought you was too much or not enough.
As always Azriel handled them with utmost care, humming when small noises of pleasure escaped you. When he was finished he tapped your shoulder to let you know, but you were too tired to summon the magic needed to conceal them.
Though, not tired enough to remember it was his turn.Â
Slowly with lethargic movements, you turn to face him. Wings folding up again, forming a natural cape on your back. âCan I-â You begin but catch yourself before you can finish. His narrowed eyes crinkled into a smile. Happy he no longer had to remind you of such a simple fact.Â
Donât ask to touch what is yours.
So instead you reach for the soap in his hands and begin to wash him. Taking satisfaction in the way his wound-up muscles, tense from hours of work, relaxed under your touch. The way his hands rested on your hips, squeezing every now and then appreciatively. The hums that left his mouth, no longer with the intent to soothe you but to let you know how pleased you made him.Â
Your touches became increasingly distracted, sleep slowly leaving your system as your mind filled with nothing but him.Â
He smirks, a mix of amusement and attraction. Allowing his own touches to become less innocent. His hands move to wrap around your wrists, dragging your hands down, down, and down his body. Soap long ago discarded.Â
