Archive | Self-portrait: ‘Butterfly’ (2014) LISTEN: I just snuck back, posting on Tumblr like I never left. Let’s see: crawling out of work and digital detox has been something else the past two weeks. I have had to enter my password three times, some passwords I forgot entirely!!!

I made a promise to myself last year that once I completed my degrees last May, I would head back to Nigeria and stay the longest I ever have stayed since leaving nearly 18 years ago.

I’m happy to share with you all that I just concluded a nearly 5-month trip back Home in Nigeria. The most fond moment yet, is getting to spend my birthday here for the first time since 1999 along with plenty other wonderful memories. My birthday fell on my literal birthday: Wednesday, Nov 8th.

I am reminded of this self-portrait and my commitment to transition(s) and transformation. Especially, how it pours into and guides my work. I am grateful to have mindfully and intently achieved my current mindscape, and I look forward to unfolding, accordingly.

Corporation support is not the source of social change, it’s the visible indication of it. A mall covered in rainbow flags with ‘pride month sales!’ is nothing that makes LGBT people more accepted, nor do tweets from companies about supporting the BLM protests do anything to stop police violence, but they DO show the shift in public mindset. Corporations don’t take risks. They don’t make bold statements that they feel are unpopular or will lose them money or support. They’re a litmus test for when a statement or symbol that has been taboo becomes a commonly held belief.
