First Some Wind, Then Some Rain || Nate + Hilda
It was stupid and he knew it, but Nate blushed red at the thought of holding Hildaâs hand. She was obviously just trying to be nice, but he wasnât a baby. âWell,â he said, âIâm not leaving and Iâm not staying here, so I guess Iâm gonna go with the third one.â He stepped away from Alpha despite the draw of her warm fur, trying to ignore Hildaâs outstretched hand. âIâve seen a lot worse than a few ghost-types,â he added, which was true. It didnât mean he wanted to encounter anything that was even close to the PokĂ©mon heâd gone up against while fighting Team Plasma, but saying it out loud did help him feel braver.
Of course it was right at the moment when he felt like this wasnât going to end as badly as heâd predicted that Alpha chose to bark at something in the shadows on the other side of the room. Nate jumped at the sound and reached out to grab Hildaâs hand without thinking. Alpha ran off into the area that wasnât lit up by Hildaâs flashlight, and Nate looked down at his hand, releasing Hildaâs just as quickly as heâd grabbed it.
The sound of a rodent PokĂ©mon squeaking and then Alphaâs fangs clacking together as she used Crunch emanated from the darkness, but Nate hardly noticed the scuffle in his embarrassment. He was blushing bright red again, mortified by his behavior. How pathetic could he possibly get? Nate Finch, scourge of Team Plasma, stupidly scared by a dark house and his own PokĂ©mon. He wanted to die. She kept giving him chances to be cool and brave and he kept goofing them up.
Alpha trotted over to him and dropped an unconscious Raticate at his side. It didnât really look hurt at all, and Nate wondered if she hadnât just snapped her jaws at it and scared it so badly it passed out. Butâit was just a Raticate. They were big and creepy, but nothing scary. And sheâd taken it out before heâd even seen it for himself. If he could keep himself from jumping every time she made a sound heâd be fine. If he could keep himself from looking like a weirdo heâd be even better.
âGood job,â he said, patting her neck. âBut no more barking like that okay?â Alpha huffed and her ears swiveled backwards. She turned fully towards whatever noise sheâd heard, and while she stared off into the darkness again Nate put his cool hands up against his too-warm face to try and get some of the redness to go away.
It didnât work, but he couldnât just stand there and pretend nothing had happened, so he looked back up at Hilda and said, âSorry about that. I, uh⊠Well, I think I might be more scared of you not liking me than I am of this dumb house.â Was that too honest? Nate hadnât really thought about the words before theyâd come spilling out of his mouth, but they were basically true. If he could be less on guard when it came to impressing Hilda, then heâd probably be able relax about the what-ifs involved in their little ghost hunt too.
Hilda studied him as he moved away from his PokĂ©mon. He was trying to act brave in front of her. It was cute but not necessary. After all thereâs no shame in being afraid but it seems like heâs deadest on hiding that from her. Shrugging at his reply Hilda lowered her outstretched hand.
âSuit yourself,â she muttered. Seconds later Nateâs Arcanine started barking at something in the shadows before chasing after it. Hilda was so caught up in watching the PokĂ©mon she nearly missed its owner grabbing her hand. Caught off guard Hilda stared down at his hand before quickly snapping her attention back to where the PokĂ©mon had disappeared.
After the sounds of a short fight Arcanine trotted back into view, a limp Raticate hanging limply from his mouth. Unable to take her eyes off it she watched as the PokĂ©mon dumped it obediently by its trainers side. Hilda grimaced at the sight of the pokĂ©mon. Thankfully it didnât look hurt, she really didnât feel like lugging the PokĂ©mon to a centre, however it did look absolutely petrified. Lost in thought she found herself staring at the PokĂ©mon for much longer than she normally would. Poor thing didnât stand a chance, it was a miracle it wasnât seriously hurt. Hilda was soon brought out of her trance by Nate apologising for, what she could only assume, was grabbing her hand. The apology caused Hilda to laugh.
âItâs fine! If I wasnât cool with it I wouldnât have offered in the first place now would I? So what if youâre scared you donât need to hide it from me,â she waved off his apology. His explanation for his actions shocked her completely. He was more scared of her not liking him than being in the supposedly haunted house? That was really saying something he seemed absolutely petrified of this place! Shocked Hildaâs mouth moved to say something but no sound came out. To her it just didnât make any sense. Why would her opinion matter that much? Her opinion has never mattered that much to anyone so why would it matter so much to him? Sheâs only just met him. Then again he did seem pretty excited to meet her back in the Marine Tunnel, did he idolise her in some way? No that was impossible.
âWha- what? Youâre scared that I wonât like you?â Hilda managed to push out. If Hilda looked closely she could almost see the dread and regret on his face as the words spilled out of her mouth. Quickly getting over initial shock she set out on saving the situation before Nate died of embarrassment and she blanked out completely.
âAs em⊠flattering⊠as that is my opinion of you shouldnât matter that much,â she started awkwardly before placing a hand on his shoulder and continuing with a warm smile, âLook I really donât want you to worry about impressing me or anything, if I donât like you so what? Iâm just one girl⊠but if my opinion of you really matters that much so far you seem like an okay guy. Just be yourself alright? Now are we gonna find out if this house of yours is haunted or not?â Hilda continued to smile as she shoved her hand in her pocket. Hopefully that was enough to smooth things over.Â
