things i learnt as a biologist while doing a 3 month coding course:
- there IS an answer. sometimes biology does not have the answer yet, but with all the coding that i’ve done, it’s literally just a matter of figuring it out. (i might be wrong here, but this is me w 3 months experience and this is what i’ve found!)
- you can still code even if you feel like you’re not good at math.
- it really is all about logic. you will understand it if you give it enough time. you may need to give it more time than other people. this does not mean you cannot be a developer.
- if you’ve been trying to get something to work for ages and it just isn’t, give yourself a break. occasionally, i have done this, come back inside, and found a solution quite quickly.
- you need to be smart about when you’re trying to work something out on your own as opposed to when you should ask for help. this is something that takes practice and figuring out - sometimes you think you’re close to a solution, but you’re way off. only experience will help in letting you know when you should ask for help.
- i feel like we have a ‘coding capacity’ for each day. this increases the more you learn and build concentration. but try to understand how long your brain can actually concentrate for in a day (on coding), and respect that. try not to burn yourself out.
- my tutor always told me that this is like learning an entire new language, so it’s okay if you’re not getting it straight away. it TAKES TIME. think about how (perhaps) you’ve been speaking the english language for years, or maybe your whole life. think about how you’re still on your way to mastering it.
- when i was feeling particularly disheartened, someone in my class said “you don’t need to be the next mark zuckerberg, you just need to know the basic logic behind these things… if you can understand last weeks stuff this week, you’re on your way.”
- it’s a slow process. i repeat, it’s a slow process. you don’t need to track your progress every week to see how much you’ve improved. just go with it. just don’t stop.
Healing isn’t linear. It’s normal to fall backwards. It doesn’t mean you’re weak. It also doesn’t erase your successes.
You’ll get there. Keep trying.
you’re sat at your kitchen table studying. you can hear the birds singing. you’re baking a loaf of bread. you’ve just understood a new topic. you’re happy.

i could talk about all the things I did (paleography exercises) or didn't (statistics assignment) do today but honestly the highlight was looking over my desk and seeing my camp friend from 10 years ago and recognising each other at the same time! i mean?? what are the chances. this was magical.
Gone are the days where Fridays are fun. Late night working with some rum is my Friday night because I know I won't be able to sleep early thanks to me sleeping close to 12 hours last night. There's something so peaceful about doing work while the world is winding down around you.
Studying immunology for my exam next monday. I hope it goes well, since it’s my first exam this semester.

Alan Mathison Turing 23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954 was an English mathematician, computer scientist, logician, cryptanalyst, philosopher and theoretical biologist. Turing was highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science, providing the concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer. Turing played a pivotal role in cracking intercepted coded messages that enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis in many crucial engagements, including the Battle of the Atlantic, and in so doing HELPED WIN the war. The list of his achievements and contribution to humanity goes on. Turing was prosecuted in 1952 for meeting with another homosexual and offered the alternative of jail or medical therapy “castration”. Due to the pills he was forced to take and the humiliation endured, he comitted suicide. He was pardoned (PARDONED? WTF?) in 2009. A bit late for him. Humans LEARN from other people’s lives and sacrifices, no need to reinvent the wheel. Can I get an Honour for this gay brother?
spent the morning with coffee and a good book:>
pic on right was taken in 張家界國家公園 (Zhangjiajie national park). the hole you see at the top of the stairs is named 天門洞 and there are 999 steps leading up to it. it's cold, the air is quite thin and the steps are so fricking small. the final stretch is at a 45° angle i believe.
yeah and my dumb ass decided to climb :^)
