the thing that broke my heart the most about reading catcher in the rye was how many people saw the result of a teenage kid who was mistreated and abused and well, basically betrayed by everyone he trusted which would fuck with anyone’s perception of people, when repeated or not, and decided that the only lesson they’ll take out of the book is that he’s crazy or annoying
it’s so bizarre to me how most people who argue that he’s crazy or annoying can’t connect holden with real cases of how most victims of abuse are seen as and treated, because most of the time a perpetrator of abuse is a normal human being, just like you or me, and often is seen as a model human being, such as a close adult or youth leader or parent or teacher or family member, in comparison to a victim who may already be unlikable in their community
and that’s what leads to shunning victims both in real life and what holden experienced, being viewed as a troubled teen and embracing that label as a defense
this is the way you’d tell me that you didn’t understand catcher in the rye without actually telling me “I didn’t understand catcher in the rye”

Holden gives the readers SO many reasons as to why he is the way he is and people will still water his character down to “edgy teen boy”
LITERALLY! You get it. And what’s even more concerning is that Holden doesn’t have to outright say it, and he does at the end—> but before that he lets the narrative tell us (him stepping back and letting another narrator (JD) take over because well.. he’s an unreliable narrator because he’s a CHILD) and people lack media literacy to a point where they’ll just creative their own narrative and call it the truth even though/when we have all the facts on every page

I straight up do not trust you if you did not enjoy a single book you had to read for English class. I know they assigned some real stuffy stinkers and the curriculum varies across districts but not one? Not The Outsiders? Not The Picture of Dorian Gray? Not Fahrenheit 451? Not even Frankenstein? Damn. That’s crazy.
For me it was The Things They Carried
It was a collection of stories from the Vietnam War. I dont remember much from it but I do remember that one story involved a guy having his girlfriend/wife fly to the jungle with him She eventually lost herself to the wilderness and didnt go back when the guy's tour was over. Created a whole legend about a Jungle spirit from it.

1. Ennis being so emotionally shut in out of fear and having his relationships blow up in his face without ever getting to see relationships as anything but a source of pain and fear
