The god Quetzalcoatl took human form to wander the world, and upon finding himself tired and hungry, met a rabbit who kindly offered to feed him with its own life and body, so Quetzalcoatl repaid this kindness by immortalizing its image on the moon.

I love this myth! Quetzalcoatl is often characterized as one of the most compassionate and human in the "Aztec" pantheon, and I think this reflects it very well.

According to myth, Quetzalcoatl was the creator of humanity in this generation, forming them from corn and giving them the knowledge of language and agriculture. In the version I knew of the rabbit myth, the deity came down to just observe his creation.

I don't know of it but there could be a Mayan version of this tale, but in that case the deity would be Kukulkan (like Namor in the black panther movie lol).
