Bitter Post for Bitter People ENHANCED!!
Jamaica Kincaid’s piece of writing that we studied in class contained multiple methods of writing that help engage the audience. Three of these things that I used in re-writing my own original piece about immigration are:
1) Facts
2) 2nd Person
3) Questions
Before:
All you anti-immigration people, this post is for you!
There are most likely a few reasonings behind your bitterness. For one, you might think that we, immigrants, are stealing your jobs. Not only are we not stealing jobs, we are, in fact, making more jobs. We bring money from our own countries and open restaurants, gas stations, etc. And you also probably think that we are ruining the economy. We are very much so doing the complete opposite of that. We are doing work, paying taxes, and spending money. Us spending money is what keeps the economy going, so you’re welcome for that. I think that you are, in fact, secretly against diversity, and since immigrants bring in new cultures, you are against us. If you don’t like diversification, go live in the woods or something. Did you forget that America was founded by immigrants and all of your ancestors are immigrants? If you’re so against immigrants, I guess you’re against yourself. In that case, go move back to the country where your ancestors are from, you’re not wanted here. See how you feel after that last sentence? That’s how you make me feel all of the time. So if you’re feeling pretty crappy after that, stop being so close minded and selfish. America is for everyone and was founded on equal rights. I have the same “right” to be here as you, so don’t be so close-minded.
Was that a bit harsh? Yes, most definitely. But it gets the point across. Don’t be bitter. Thanks :)
After:
This is a shout out to you anti-immigration people out there!!
Imagine that you are an immigrant, coming from halfway across the world. You are scared and lost when you step off of the plane, surrounded by foreign tongue and unfamiliar land. Your 13-year-old older sister, the one with the best English, has to ask a fellow passenger where the baggage claim is. He points and mumbles to himself as he walks away about how foreigners are taking over the country and are not wanted. How does this make you feel at this point? Probably very unwanted and unwelcome in this foreign country to you that you just traveled 15 hours by plane to get to. You just uprooted your entire life and are starting all over, and already you are getting treated poorly for no good reason at all. All of your friends, your relatives, and your loved ones are back home, and suddenly a wave of sadness washes over you. You wonder if you made the right decision.
This bitterness towards immigrants may come from several aspects of your previous perceptions of immigration. For one, you might think that we, immigrants, are stealing your jobs. Not only are we not stealing jobs, we are, in fact, making more jobs. We bring money from our own countries and open restaurants, gas stations, etc. Do you think that immigrants are ruining the economy? We are very much so doing the complete opposite of that. We are doing work, paying taxes, and spending money. Us spending money IS what keeps the economy going, so you’re welcome for that. I think that you are, in fact, secretly against diversity, and since immigrants bring in new cultures, you are against us. Did you forget that America was founded by immigrants and all of your ancestors are immigrants? If you’re so against immigrants, I guess you’re against yourself. So in that case you should also move back to the country where you came from. And another thing: America was founded on diversity and acceptance and rights for every human being. If you are so American that you think you have the right to tell other people to leave, then you are American enough to believe in the foundation of America. I have the same “right” to be here as you, so don’t be selfish and ignorant! Next time you think immigrants don't belong in America, put yourself in our shoes.
Reflection - How these three things enhanced my original piece of writing:
Adding second person really helped me engage the audience. It put the reader into the shoes of an immigrant and the experience of moving to a new country. Facts helped support the argument and disproved popular notions that people have of immigrants. Questions forced the reader to think about his stance and his beliefs. Overall, adding these things into my original piece allowed me to really get my audience to think about their beliefs and made them consider changing them.

Ahh doomsday is coming. Dun dun dunnnnnn. Finals. Blah. Don't stress too much and get plenty of rest (and don't cram like usual, it won't work for a final…TOOOO much information!)…I should follow my own advice sometimes :)
Health Benefits of Drinking Coffee Infographic
Coming at my topic from a different perspective!!!
Throughout researching my topic I mostly found that stress caused a negative impact. However, stress usually is associated with drinking coffee, which aparently has health benefits! I really didn't think that coffee was in any way good for you, but I guess it is! For example it can increase glucose metabolism and provides your body with antioxidants and minerals.
Some health benefits:
Reduces Heart Alzheimer's risk, reduces cancer risk, increases memory, and decreases chance for type II diabetes. And look! It even reduces heart disease!!! It does this by improving blood vessel function. This was very interesting…I wasn't aware that coffe could benefit the body in so many ways!

How the Trans Fats Issue Relates to Me!
aessa27 's blog talks about the problem of trans fats. This topic relates to pretty much everyone because we all get food from the grocery store that has some form of trans fat in it. It interests me because I like to be aware of what I am putting in my body and what effects it has on me. One of her posts was very helpful because it showed what a "healthy eating plate" looked like.
Three things that I learned from this blog are:
1) It showed what proportion of your meal should be fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy protein, water, and healthy oils. It also showed me that Michelle Obama is taking action to enforce healthy food in schools, which I think is very important. Children grow quickly and their diets are very important in determining their health for the rest of their lives. Healthy children equal healthy adults!
2) A second thing that I found interesting is the discussion that a third of the population can't afford "healthy food". Healthy food at the grocery store is so much more expensive than unhealthy food. For example organic broccoli will be so much more expensive than regular broccoli. This makes an even better reason to ban trans fats. If they were banned then fast food restaurants would be forced to make their food in a healthy way. Because of marketing competition, they would still be forced to keep their prices low, which would make fast food healthier, while keeping it just as accessible.
3) A third thing that I learned is that more people are for banning trans fats than for not banning trans fats. People sometimes oppose banning trans fats because of their food preferences. They may also oppose banning trans fats because they don't want the government controlling what they can and can't eat. However, the argument can be made that people that are for banning trans fats are for it because it sounds healthy, and they don't really know what it encompasses.
I recommend reading aessa27 's blog, it is very interesting and very well written! (:
Plans for tomorrow? Join me at The Grove in Los Angeles for #WeRunTheGrove, a 13.1 mile run/walk benefiting American Heart Association! Register & donate here: http://bit.ly/1fzSbGU
Here is an event that raises awareness about heart disease!!! Runs and walks are great fundraisers as well as fun events for everyone. They are very widespread and are a great way to spread awareness about the topic at hand!! It doesn't only raise awareness in adults, it also raises awareness in children because they are brought to these events with their families at a young age. Informing the youth of an issue is the best way to make the greatest impact about an issue.
General Dwight Eisenhower raises both arms and acknowledges the New York crowd’s cheers. An estimated 4 million people turned out for his V-E (Victory in Europe) parade on June 6, 1945.
Dwight D. Eisenhower: 1953-1961
This is my EL PRESIDENTE post!!!
The president that I chose that represents my topic is Dwight Eisenhower, who had a heart attack in 1955. His heart attack may have been brought on him earlier because of the stress of being president. Stress doesn't only cause heart problems, it affects the entire body. All of the other presidents suffered other health problems, which were made worse by their stress. For example Warren Harding had to get hospitalized for fatigue and a nervous illness, while Grover Cleveland also suffered a heart attack. The stress of being in office cut these great people's lives short in making their health issues worse.
Flexibility
So heres something opposite of my topic!
Medicine and science….opposite: art!
I have actually been a dancer my whole life, and wanted to post this to show people the realities of dancing. When I tell people that I am a ballerina, they think that I just twirl around all day and that it isn't hard work. They don't realize what goes on behind the scenes. As a dancer I spent 4 hours every day dancing after school Monday-Thursday. On Fridays I was at the studio for 5 hours, and on Saturdays I would spend 9 hours at rehearsal. Every day there is a class in which you repeat the same moves (in different variations). You spend your days perfecting those moves, making sure every inch of your body is perfectly placed. With this perfection comes pain of stretching your body to unimaginable measures. After every rehearsal, your muscles hurt, but you can't take a break the next day because you have rehersal again. Repeat this over and over every day. Not so easy is it?
I am opposite ends of the spectrum: Dancing and science are both things that define me.
According to the New York Times, some researchers say that almost two million American kids could have a controversial attention disorder called “sluggish cognitive tempo.”
Half of these kids are a subset of the six million currently diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder —...
This re-post is not really related to my original topic of the effects of stress on the heart. Instead, it focuses on a medical disease: ADHD and how there may be another disorder that is similar to ADHD, but is therefore causing children to be misdiagnosed and treated incorrectly.
This article discusses how doctors think that children with the disorder “sluggish cognitive tempo” are being incorrectly put into the ADHD group. Because of this, they are being given the incorrect treatment. Doctors are still agreeing on the symptoms of this disorder. They kids that have this disorder are the ones that are “the daydreamy ones, the ones with work that’s not turned in, leaving names off of papers or skipping questions, things like that." This all means that kids are getting mis-diagnosed with a wrong condition and are getting incorrect medication.
Speaking of medication, doctors are also saying that there is an overmedication problem. A psychiatric illness book says that only about 5% of American children have ADHD, but 11% are currently diagnosed with the disorder. This increase can be attributed to parents that want better grades, or even drug marketing companies.
Overall, I think that parents are getting their kids over-medicated because they mistake normal playful and active child behavior for ADHD. Many kids skip questions on tests and forget to write their names. That is just part of childhood: being careless and hyper. Doesn't mean we need to give all of them Adderall to stop these actions.

I’ve given a fair amount of insight into anxiety so far in my blog relating to ways to reduce anxiety and some situations that can cause someone’s anxiety to become so prevalent in their lives. However, I have yet to discuss and take a view on the brain and how it can impact someone and their anxiety level. Some people may have a genetic predisposition to have anxious tendencies and are therefore naturally more likely to be anxious. Just like many other mental health disorders, anxiety can be caused or at least assisted by chemical imbalances in the brain. This can be see by researchers and doctors through fMRI imaging, seen as in the picture above. This uses magnets to see which areas are active in the brain. They would compare the fMRI images of a patient who is believed to be suffering from anxiety to a normal patient’s fMRI map. Different areas are active in the brain at different times and can vary in those with anxiety and other mental health disorders. This can explain some of the associated feelings and symptoms that arise from having anxiety.
I have focused on the heart and how stress affects it. This was really interesting to see and it caught my eye right away. This proves that there are chemicals released during stress that affect other parts of the body. These changes to your brain are permanent and can cause mental disorders later in life. Doesn't this just make you wonder: is all of this stress worth increasing ? All this stress over finals, it's good to stress a little so that you're motivated to study. However, if you stress to the point of not getting enough sleep and too much anxiety, it's not worth it. This made me change my perspective on stress and my belief that it just causes major changes in your heart.
More food to reduce your stress! Instead of getting those fries and grilled cheese for dinner, get some vegetables to enhance your diet and enhance heart health while you're at it! (:
Remix Remix Remix
This is the final remix of a generative writing for Greg's class. For this assignment (similar to my last remix) we had to respond to "Is Whole Foods Wholesome" by Field Maloney. In this article, Maloney talked about how Whole Foods Market is overpriced and uses false advertising tactics to lure customers into buying their products. He says that even Wal-Mart is selling organic food now, and that their prices are much lower.
Organic food is better for your health because there are less pesticides and chemicals in it. Whole foods is beneficial in this aspect. When you go to Whole Foods, it is such an overall healthy environment that it motivates you to eat healthier than if you went to Wal-Mart. In Wal-Mart you are surrounded by preserved and unhealthy food. Even if you are a person who eats extremely healthy, you are more likely to buy an unhealthy product when you are shopping there. The overall quality of Wal-Mart "organic" produce is also worse in quality than Whole Food's. Whole Food's produce is always extremely fresh and each piece of fruit and vegetable is perfect. Wal-Mart frequently has produce that aren't fresh. I agree that Whole Food's is a little pricey, but for the product they are offering, it is well worth it.
Healthy food that is not grown with a lot of chemicals is great for your health, especially your heart health. I have posted many articles about healthy food and what foods are beneficial to specific parts of your body such as your immune system, brain health, and heart.
Food should be nourishment…medicine and fuel for the body.
Did you know that red fruits and vegetables are good for your heart? Here are some other fruit that are healthy for your body!
I just thought you all could use a little nature pick me up! When ever I’m stressed or am missing being outside I look at pictures like these. These pictures are pretty and give you even more reason to appreciate nature! Seeing things like this should make you appreciate and want to preserve nature! All of these pictures came from of my favorite blogs called the-three-trees. http://the-three-trees.tumblr.com/ CHECK IT OUT
Woahh these are really cool pictures, and I agree that they are really soothing and stress-reducing. During finals week just imagine you are in a soothing nature happy-place (:

Stress doesn't only affect your heart, it also affects your brain!
The frontal cortex part of your brain is crucial for higher-level thinking…when you're stressed this part is supressed by hormones. So literally stress supresses your ability to think and make rational decisions. The hypocampus is also affected, which limits your memory.
This video also includes some funny stories of what has happened to people when they were really stressed!
(As far as I know, no one else has talked about this on tumblr)
Remix it UPPP
Hello beautiful followers, how are you this lovely day?
So this post is a remix of a previous assignment that we had to do for Greg's class. We had to summarize, analyze, and respond to Nicholas Carr's article "Is Google Making Us Stupid?". This article basically talked about how google is taking over the world, changing the way we think, and is making us unable to focus. Since google, and technology in general, is trying to make everything as quick and efficient as possible, Carr states that we may very well soon be replaced by robots because we're not good enough.
Basically, Carr is nuts.
Google isn't making us fidgety and changing the way our brain functions, don't be crazy and paranoid. It is, however, increasing our stress.
Lets rewind to a time with no technology. Imagine that you are a caveman: what does your typical day look like? Well, you probably wake up in the morning around 6 am from the warm, beautiful sun shining. No stupid annoying alarm waking you up, just the quiet peaceful sun. You are well rested because you probably went to bed around 8am last night, since you don't particularly want to get eaten by that lion that you accidentally step on in the dark. You spend the day looking for food and then eating it. Summary: sleep, eat, repeat. Stress? Not at all (well actually maybe trying not to get killed, but shh don't count for my purposes).
Now, think of how your typical days with technology are. You wake up at 6am to your alarm screeching at you. You press the snooze button and crawl back into your oh-so-warm-and-soft bed and you think about how much you are dreading to start the day, which consists of 3 classes and two back to back final exams. Super exhausted from getting only 2 hours of sleep the night before (you were writing your 3 papers, studying for a test, all while dealing with your drunk-on-a-Thursday annoying roommate) you drag yourself out of bed. After showering, you come back to 30 email notifications on your phone from your professors and the school about upcoming deadlines and crap you have to do.
Need I go further? It's only 6:30 am and you're already stressed out of your mind. You probably were even stressed out while sleeping, doing math problems in your dreams, and think you're going crazy. So I guess I do agree with Carr that Google is ruining us, but not in the sense that it is changing us physically, but that it is stressing us out and reducing our lifespan by giving us heart disease (see what I did there by tying that back to effect of stress on heart? (; )
