WHAT I REALIZED DURING HIGH SCHOOL 1. Our education system values grades higher than actual knowledge or intelligence. We cheat and lie on tests and exams because really, it doesn’t matter what’s in our head as long as our report card says A+. 2. Mistakes are not ok. We are told we’re here to learn and that mistakes are human, but why are all our mistakes highlighted and sometimes even laughed upon? Every mistake costs you points and with every mistake your grade drops. Making a mistake is punished severely and it is a disaster. 3. This general judgemental, extremely critical and strict attitude teachers have towards students is infecting this generation. We judge and gossip about and look down to people who could easily be our friends, because parents and teachers have taught us to be critical on a level that is no longer sane. 4. Your best is not enough. I can guarantee you that 90% of us is trying their damn best, and still parents and teachers are standing in the side-line, not helping but shouting “You can do better!” Working your butt off during late hours when you should be sleeping and barely getting a B- is simply not good enough.   5. Self-confidence is impossible. Look at all those hours you’ve spent studying just to feel worthless as soon as the test is handed out. I can assure you your confidence is zero when you can’t read the assignment because your tears blur your sight. And if the exams don’t bring you down there’s always your fellow students who are happy to judge you and to make you feel bad. You’re welcome; it’s our pleasure. We’ve been raised with the constant judging and comparison to others, it’s normal to us. 6. It’s either stepping around the kid having a panic attack or being the kid having a panic attack. The level of anxiety students have these days is similar to that of a psychiatric patient in the 1950s. The level of courage it takes to walk through a crowded hallway or to do a presentation in the front of the class is alarming.
