“Holy shit,” he murmured, stunned. He hadn’t smelled mermaid magic in years, not since the last time his pack got too close to the coasts and lost three wolves to the sea. It was rare. Forbidden. Dangerous. The kind of magic that could call storms or shatter bones from the inside if provoked. And she smelled perfect. Cassian’s pulse quickened, his wolf stirring. He adjusted the collar of his coat and walked forward slowly, each step deliberate. No more laughing. No more curiosity. This was something else now. He passed a café window. Warm lights. Two women behind the counter. And there she was. Her.

“Fuck!!!” Topaz whispered, stepping back from the window. Amber didn’t look up from the coffee grinder. “What is it?” she asked, voice still drowsy from their 4am wake-up. Topaz didn’t answer. Her heart was hammering. Her hands were cold. She stared through the glass as the detective looked up, looked right at her, with eyes the colour of dead things and daylight. And smiled. “Fuck!” she said again. This time louder.

Vlad’s body slammed into the stone, dust and magic flaring around him. Morrigan’s hand gripped his throat, her fangs gleaming, her eyes burning red. He tried to speak. She didn't let him. “You tried to control me my entire life,” she growled. “You made me a weapon. A tool. A thing. But I am not yours.” He hissed, his hand sparking with dark magic.

It happened in a blur. A knock at the door. A familiar voice: “Ione, can I speak with you?” Ceto. Trusted. Loyal. Steady. Ione opened it without thought. A flash of movement. A sharp pain in his neck. Darkness. He woke chained to a wall.

Next on Tides and Thrones - The ending....

He had other loyalties. He paused at the old iron door, half-concealed behind a rusted suit of armor. He touched the stone beside it. Once clockwise, once counter. It groaned open. The air changed instantly. Warmer. Wetter. Electric. A siren's prison always reeked of salt and sorrow. Ceto stepped into the long-forbidden corridor, breath catching slightly in his throat. He hadn’t seen her in months. Not since the deal. Not since he’d agreed to watch Wisteria… to get close… to prove himself. To earn this one thing. To keep Bella alive. He descended the spiral stairs into the holding chambers, lit only by bio-luminescent moss. The walls pulsed faintly with magic containment wards designed to trap ocean-born creatures. And at the very bottom? A glowing tank. Half-water, half-magic. The containment field shimmered like heat off glass. Inside, floating near the surface, lay Bella. Long black hair drifted around her shoulders. Her skin was pale, bluish, her tail curled like an exhausted serpent. Her lips were parted, her eyes closed, and for a split second, Ceto’s heart seized in fear— Then she stirred.

Morrigan’s eyes didn’t waver. “What would there be to hide?”

Vlad tilted his head. “That is what I intend to find out.”

Ceto shifted slightly behind her.

But Morrigan?

She smiled.

Cool. Controlled. Lethal.

“Then we hope you enjoy your hunt, Father,” she said softly. “But some prey bites back.”
