It was mid-February, and as always I was assisting Victor with his work when a knock sounded from the office.
??? (Ellis): Kate, are you there?
Victor’s hands stopped at the voice, turning toward me,
but I stood up— a silent statement that I had been waiting for him— and placed my hand on the door.
Kate: Ellis!
Ellis: Sorry for bothering in the middle of work. I got what you asked for, though, so I came to give it.
Victor: “What you asked for?” (O_O)
Ellis gave me the envelope and I sandwiched it between documents so Victor wouldn’t be able to see it.
Ellis: It’s not the best though...
Kate: Even still, I’m happy with this. Thank you.
Looking satisfied with my answer, Ellis gave a soft smile.
Ellis: Okay, then I’ll get going. Good luck with everything tomorrow, Kate.
Ellis left the office, leaving just the two of us.

Unable to conceal my happiness, I turned around to see a pouting Victor...
Victor: ...Is this such a secret to keep even from a lover?

When everything was more or less clean, he held me in his arms and moved the gadget that connected to his room.

Evening light filtered in as Victor let me down on the bed. Propping himself on top of me, he kissed me over and over.
Kate: Mm, Victor...
The kisses grew deeper, and my slightly-opened eyes met with his heated gaze.

Victor softly smiled in response to my whisper, planting a kiss to my forehead.

Tonight as well, crimson scatters through the dark.
Kate: Will, look this way for a moment.
William: Hm?
I gently reached out, dabbing at the rare flecks of blood splattered across his pale cheek with my handkerchief.
William: Thank you. You’re quite observant, Kate.
His eyes softened, narrowing in quiet comfort — so unlike the cold gaze he’d fixed on his target just moments ago, it felt as though I were looking at a different person entirely.
And yet, the more I looked at that calm expression…the more my chest seemed to ache, tightening with a faint, creaking pain.
The Condemned Man: Die while suffering the torments of hell! Ha…. haha, ahahaha!
The corpse lay still, its throat torn open by its own hand, yet the stream of abuse it had hurled at Will just moments ago still rang in my ears.
William: …No matter how stubborn the stain is, surely it’s come off by now?
Kate: Oh sorry, I’ve been at this too long.
William: I don’t mind if you keep going until you’re satisfied. Being watched so intently from up close… is rather pleasant.
When I pulled the handkerchief away, the red that had stained his cheek was gone without a trace.
(And yet… sins, curses, fate — none of those can simply be wiped away.)
Will had long since resolved himself to be branded as evil. He smiled without wavering, without so much as a flicker of pain.
That unwavering calm made him all the more dear to me, and it hurt.

William: To think the world’s meant to end in a few days, and yet the wicked carry on as ever. No rest for villains, it seems.
The news that “the world will end in a few days” had been sweeping through London for weeks now.
The city was abuzz with rumours — that the true end would come in just two days.
Kate: They say it’s only a rumour, just like Victor mentioned.
Kate: But if the cursed are involved, then maybe it really could be the end.
As I recalled what I’d heard earlier that day, a faint trace of unease, something I’d only barely felt at the time, slipped into my voice.
At that, Will let a small smile touch his lips, giving a light shrug.
William: If that’s the case, perhaps tonight’s execution was unnecessary.
Kate: …Huh?
William: If all of humanity is to reach its end at the same moment… then there’s no need for a poison meant to keep evil in check.
Kate: —! Th-that’s… true.
(Then that means…)
Kate: You wouldn’t have to be judged as evil, or meet a tragic end… right?
William: Perhaps.
(Which means Will would be free.)
If everything were to end at once, the people who’ve had their freedom stolen, forced to suffer without even the hope of salvation… and the malice that tramples over them —
All of it will be gone in the same instant.
Maybe for that final day, free from all the things that bring him sorrow or drive him to anger, Will might be able to spend it in peace.
Kate: I just found myself wishing the world really would end right now.
William: Ahaha!
At my quiet, half-serious confession, Will let out an amused laugh.
Then he took my hand, drew me close by the waist, and leaned in, his lips brushing near my ear as if sharing a secret.
William: In that case, shall we truly bring the world to an end?
Kate: …What?

William: Now, don’t sulk, Kate. Won’t you look at me like you did just now?
Kate: …No, I can’t. You’re still smirking.
William: My apologies. I’ve made such an effort to keep a constant smile that my lips seem to have memorized the shape.
Kate: Your eyes are still laughing!
William: Well, that would be… mm, haha… really, ahaha!
Kate: See? You’re still laughing!
William: Haha… I apologize. I just can’t help it when I remember the look on your face when your thoughts completely froze.
In the end, “Shall we bring the world to an end?” had simply meant — “Let’s try living as though the world truly will end.”
And apparently, Will seemed to quite enjoy the way I froze up after taking him seriously.
Kate: It just felt like something you could do, Will. Destroy the world, I mean. That’s why it surprised me.
William: I see… yes, that’s fair. I truly am sorry for laughing.
He pulled me close, resting my head against his shoulder as he gently stroked my hair, and just like that, my mood lifted.
I know I’m far too easy, but I couldn’t stop the small smile tugging at my lips.
William: So then, if tomorrow were your last day, how would you wish to spend it?
