"Yeah, her," Max said, forgetting when he mentioned his cousin. She was his only cousin and while the family name had a reputation on both ends of the world, the family was quite small. "Not for too long," he nods. "Yeah, just going to use her couch and help her with stuff before finding my own place. I didn't come here with a plan. But I always land on my feet. What's your cousin like? Are you close with your family?" These would be the usual first date questions he would ask, but there was nothing normal about this. Max didn't know how many dates they went on and he knew what they were doing. Dancing around the question at the heart of all of this in hopes they could walk blindly ahead. Max was doing his part by scoping her with easy questions and was too in his head that he didn't notice he was standing closer to her now.
Her words minced his efforts and Max's lips twitched. Of course, he almost forgot how they met. For him, it had been natural. For her, it was an assignment. "For me, it was," he said honestly, shrugging and then turned towards her. "I remember everything...are you hiding anything from me this time? I'd rather know now than be blindsided later."
Max didn't know what they were doing, but he had thought about standing in front of her many times like this. Whether it was a planned speech to get whatever words off his chest or tell her how he's felt, regardless of his vexation with her. "Well if we're being honest, I was hoping for more than just two dates."
"You do always land on your feet, you'll find a place I'm sure of it." It had been what infuriated the American police the most. They could never seem to get him off his game. Flick couldn't help but admire it. "People think Pandora's rather odd, she can see things others can't. But I've always adored her. Sometimes I think she's almost like another sister. I am close with them, yes. It's been nice to have them nearby again."
She winced. Yes, she had deserved that. Lying to him hadn't gotten easier at any point. Hell it had only ever gotten worse the more she grew to love him. "By the end of tonight, there will be no more secrets between us. I promise."
Merlin she was 28 she shouldn't feel like some school girl with her first love. He made her breath catch. She wanted everything he could possibly offer, anything he'd give her. "I want that, too. Very much so."
