Do you ever think Effie feels guilty about her feelings for Haymitch?

Effie is fundamentally a giver, and love in their strange circumstances is inherently selfish.

She didn't know Lenore Dove personally, but she knew how important she was to Haymitch. And yet, she longs to be that same sunshine for him, lifting him up, motivating him to do better, but she's a harbinger of darkness, dragging him further and further to the bottom of the bottle every year.

And so here she is again, sitting on this train, "fighting" the ghost of a (metaphorically) holy woman for all she knows, with no chance of winning. Because she's not perfect, no matter how hard she tries. She doesn't quite fit into Capitol society, even though she tries, and the people in the districts simply hate her. She has no place anywhere, especially near Haymitch, because she's so selfish that she can't let him go and keeps trying to bring him back to life.

think of effie, trying to hide within the shadows once haymitch won, not seeking credit nor attention for her part, but always within distance of his cage, always within a watchful eye in case anything goes wrong and there's anything she can do.

think of effie, who saw the way and how much haymitch loved and lost, knowing full well her desire to care for him is limited only to their meetings during the games every year, as they lose and lose more children to the games.

think of effie, always thinking of haymitch, quietly hoping against the capitol's teachings, that one day haymitch will get better and be okay, and maybe even open himself up for love once again.

And then you meet Lucy Gray, and she’s just put a snake down someone’s dress. And immediately you have to reassess. And you figure out that it’s a little more complicated — they’re both the songbird, and they’re both the snake, but whereas Lucy Gray is associated with wild animals she befriends in the woods, Coriolanus is associated with Capitol mutts he first meets in a lab. Gaul’s rainbow snakes, the jabberjays.

And then the plot thickens even deeper, right, because it turns out the snakes represent their methods. They’re both cunning, good at improvising, not apposed to lying and performing when need be. They get each other! They click with each other, really well and really easily, because of that synergy in how they work with each other! SC isn’t saying that being ‘snakelike’ is bad or evil in and of itself. She’s cautioning you to think about what you’re using those methods for.
