He flashed a grin as she started looking him up and down- the type of grin he gave those who thought he was weak. How it was really interpreted depended on the person, however. To some it was a snarl. To others ( very few others ), it was just a smirk. The context played the biggest role of all, of course. Sitting in a classroom was different than being harassed. Either way, said grin widened when she finally spoke.
“ So you like tall, dark, intimidating strangers in big coats. Noted. “
He faced the front of the room moments after her, scanning it over for a moment. Jocks, nerds, et cetera. She was the only thing out of the ordinary, one of the alleged freaks that satin the back. Just like him. His grin relaxed into a smirk, although he didn’t face her when hespoke. She knew what she was doing, huh? Few teens were dragged through ten high schools, so this was… not what he was expecting. He had met outcasts such as himselfseveral times, he had simply taken care to avoid them. After all, he wasn’t ever going to stick around. Whether he wanted to or not.
Although he was talking with her, he wasn’t getting emotionally attached. That was key. His voice was quieter as well, seeing as his personal life wasn’t the business of anyone but himself. And her, in this case, but that was different.
“ Depends on your definition of from here. Did I originate here? No. Have I been going to this school for longer than you? Yes. For that much longer? No. That makes two of us. “
He was baring his teeth at her in that predator-shark grin she knew so well, and she bit down on her lower lip, hard, to stop the answering smile she knew wanted to form on her own face. And then it got bigger, and she bit down harder, because Christ he was pretty when he smiled, and wasn't that unexpected? Deranged, she was deranged, and--oh, good, wonderful. She pressed fingertips to her mouth, a small smear of glistening red coming away at her touch. Now she was bleeding.
She tongued the tiny cut, muttering, "you make it sound like a bad thing," at his description of her apparent taste in men. Two tiny spots of color flared to life on her cheeks.
Please. Like she'd be interested. Love wasn't meant for... someone like her. And anyway, who knew how long she'd be here, wherever this was? All she had to do was keep her head down and survive, until something changed. This kid just made her a little homesick, was all. And since when had she started thinking of Wonderland as home?
But he'd been here longer than her. He might have useful information to share...not that hanging out with her was some fantastic prize. Could he be bribed?
"Fellow bibliophile?" The question was casual, asked to the air.
She then flipped her notebook open and started sketching a crude map, mostly consisting of boxes. One box said
A box next to it read 'room of one's own'.
A third box on the other side of the street read '8-11???' Clearly, she didn't quite know the name of the store she was labeling, but it was close enough.
She didn't turn it toward him, but didn't hide her work, either, wondering if natural nosiness would do the trick.
