Honestly, I feel like the episode would’ve been okay if it wasn’t the finale. I actually liked a lot of the individual scenes, and I thought the cinematography was great. I even liked the ending!! The idea of them being brain scans was always one of my favorite theories, so I was hyped to see that’s the direction they went in. It’s just the way that everything was presented that really makes it lackluster.

For starters, despite being an ensemble show, no one besides Jax, Pomni, and Caine really did anything meaningful. The others had little moments here and there, but they were either repeat scenes of things we’d seen in other episodes or nothing that ultimately furthered the main plot. And speaking of the main plot, so much of it was left unanswered and unexplored that by the end I was sitting there like “… really? That’s it?” You’re telling me no one had any qualms or existential crisis about how they were technically fine this whole time? They just accept it? Why was Caine just sent to the void when he got deleted? What happened to Bubble? They had such a strong set up for a banger ending but decided to waste their time by telling us the backstory of the already most fleshed-out character who, in the end, isn’t even our main character.

So I got the honor and privilege of seeing Iron Lung again and here’s some of the stuff that I noticed my second time around!!

When the porthole breaks and that little bit of blood splashes Simon across the face, the splatter actually disappears for the majority of the movie!! It disappears as soon as he punches the speaker and then reappears like 40 minutes later as soon as he starts coughing up blood; it’s essentially gone for the entire time he’s speaking to the “SM-8” so… take that as you will

Speaking of the crack in the porthole, it’s kinda shaped like a tree, which I think is a fun little detail

And another thing about the blood, specifically the blood on Simon, there’s two streaks of blood by his eye that slowly turn into raw skin!! I don’t have the time frame for those sadly but they start as just blood spots and eventually turn into open wounds

The SM-8 gets revealed literally the first time Simon opens the manual for the ship. On the title page, the printed letters say “SM-8”, and in pencil the 8 is crossed out and a 13 is put next to it. It’s not even well hidden- it was there the whole time.

The beginning of the movie REALLY harps on the condensation inside the sub- there’s at least 15 shots of just water alone before Simon gets pulled up for the first time- which once you learn about the radiation from the camera makes so, so much sense

When the guy from COI is talking to Simon, he mentions how he might’ve accidentally connected the wiring for the ship’s camera and the ship’s backup generator. Later when Simon eventually starts up the backup generator, it lights on fire- from the amount of times Simon was using the camera, the poor thing probably overheated

Iron Lung really fits the troupe of “this story is a tragedy because it was always going to end this way” because looking back, Simon was dead the moment they sealed him into the sub.
