notorious-missridinghood:
Red shakes her head. “I pick them from the fields and sell them for a dollar.” One day she will have sold enough to move her and Grandmama out of their shack in the woods and into a nice house in the city; and also to take Snow White with them, away from her foul father and sinister step-mother!
She removes a flower from the basket and hands it to the girl. “But these ones are for free.” She adds, trying to put a strict, professional flair to her voice, “Although I can only give away one flower per person, so you can’t take another, even if you’d like to.”
“Oh, thank you. It’s so wonderful that you’re doing this,” Esther complimented the girl, taking the flower into her hand gently and giving it a cursory look. This was a charity matter, apparently. Yes, she’ll do so much good giving a bunch of orphaned rugrats flowers that will die out in a few days..
But it is important to remain optimistic, as it will do Esther good to increase her social status. “Do not worry, I don’t want another flower. All of them are different, and it is important to see what is special about what we have, don’t you think?”
With the same charming smile, she looks back at the basket. “I hope you picked an extra one for yourself. You deserve it!”
