the apartment had never felt so quiet. at first, you liked the silence.
it meant sleeping in your own bed instead of hotel rooms. it meant lazy mornings with coffee on the balcony and evenings where you could watch whatever you wanted without kimi stealing the remote.
but after a while, the silence became lonely.
his hoodies still hung over the back of the sofa, his racing simulator sat untouched in the corner, his mug was still on the drying rack from the last morning he’d been home. everywhere you looked, there was something that reminded you of him.
you tried filling the time by meeting up with friends, picking up extra shifts at work, binge-watching shows you’d been meaning to start and even learning how to make his favourite pasta.
none of it changed the fact that every night, the apartment felt too big for one person.
one afternoon, while walking home after grabbing groceries, you passed a small animal rescue.
a tiny orange kitten was asleep against the glass.
you stopped and pressed your cheek against the wall.
the kitten met ypur eyes, walked over and pressed one tiny paw against the window.
“…oh no.”
you knew that feeling.
twenty minutes later, you were sitting inside the rescue with the kitten asleep in your lap while a volunteer smiled knowingly.
“i think she likes you.”
you looked down at the little ball of orange fluff purring against your hoodie. she reminded you of andrea. “…i think she has.”
you should probably ask kimi.
but that would’ve been the responsible thing to do.
instead, you convinced yourself you’d just visit the kitten again tomorrow.
you left forty-five minutes later carrying a cat carrier, a bag of food, a scratching post, toys and adoption papers..
the apartment didn’t feel quite so empty anymore.
the kitten followed you everywhere:
when you cooked, she sat by your feet.
when you folded laundry, she curled up in the warm pile of clothes.
when you facetimed kimi, she somehow always managed to stay just out of frame.
“you’ve been smiling a lot more lately,” he said one evening.
“have i?” you tilt your head.
“yeah.”
you smiled to yourself. “maybe i’m just happy to see you.”
he grinned. “i’ll take that.”
you almost told him, more than once but every time, you imagined the look on his face if you surprised him, so you kept the secret.
two weeks later, you were flying out to meet him for race weekend.
miso slept peacefully inside a small carrier at your feet. you’d already gotten permission to bring her into the paddock from the team and everyone who knew had promised not to tell kimi which apparently was the hardest secret they’d ever had to keep.
you were waiting outside the mercedes hospitality unit when kimi finally appeared. the moment he spotted you, his entire face lit up “there you are.” he wrapped you in a hug so tight your feet nearly left the ground. “i missed you.”
“i missed you too.”
he kissed your forehead before pulling back.“what’s in the carrier?”
you smiled. “nothing.”
he looked at you suspiciously. “…you’re a terrible liar.”
before you could answer..
a tiny..
“mew.”
was heard.
kimi froze.“…”
another little meow echoed from inside the carrier.
he blinked once. then twice and slowly, he looked down then right back up at you. “…did that bag just meow?”
you couldn’t hold it in anymore. you laughed, crouching down to unzip the carrier. miso, ypur cute kitten, immediately poked her head out before looking around curiously.
kimi stared. “…”
“…”
“…is that…”
you nodded with a big grin. “this is miso.”
he looked at the kitten and then at you and then back at the kitten. “…you got a cat?”
“i got lonely.” you pouted in response.
his expression softened immediately causing you to look down at your shoes. “the apartment felt really empty without you.”
for a second, neither of you spoke. then he crouched beside you. “hey.”
you looked up.
he gently tucked a strand of hair behind your ear. “im sorry.”
you shook your head. “don’t be.”
“i hate that you felt lonely.”
“i know.”
he glanced at the kitten, who was now trying to climb out of the carrier. “…can i?”
you laughed. “of course.”
he carefully lifted miso into his arms like she was made of glass. the kitten blinked up at him and then immediately started purring.
“oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” you said.
kimi looked far too pleased with himself. “she likes me.”
“she’s known you for six seconds. SHUT up.”
“i’m just naturally lovable.”
you rolled your eyes. “keep talking.”
before he could answer, someone walked past.
“oh my god, is that a cat?”
within seconds, half the mercedes garage had wandered over. even a few photographers stopped to take pictures.
“whose is she?”
kimi smiled proudly. “our cat. miso!”
you looked over at him. “ours?”
he shrugged casually. “well… i’m emotionally attached now.”
one mechanic scratched miso under the chin “awww she’s tiny.”
“she’s spoiled already,” you admitted.
kimi looked at you. “how spoiled?”
“…” you nervously looked around.
“how spoiled?”
“…she has three beds.”
he blinked. “three?”
“she likes options and besides she’s practically a queen.”
he laughed so hard he nearly dropped the toy mouse one of the mechanics had handed him “she has more beds than i do.”
“don’t be dramatic.”
“i sleep in hotels.”
“and she doesn’t.”
he looked down at the kitten curled comfortably against his chest. “…fair enough.”
someone snapped a photo.
kimi didn’t even notice.
he was too busy smiling at the tiny orange kitten who had somehow found her favourite place to sleep.
right against his heartbeat.
he looked over at you.
“you know…”
“what?”
“i leave for three weeks…”
“…”
“…and somehow i come back to a family.”
you laughed, slipping your hand into his. “surprise!”
he leaned over, kissing your forehead before looking back down at miso. “best surprise i’ve ever had.”
now the apartment waiting back home wouldn’t feel quite so empty anymore, because now, no matter how many races took him away, there would always be two girls waiting for him to come home. (you and miso duh)
