Sophia sneaks downstairs, she’d managed to convince one of the intern chefs to stay later than usual and help her make cookies, which she now was taking downstairs.
Avoiding Vic was the hardest part, she loved Vic. But this was for everyone! Even the idiots who tried to scare her.
So she hurried to the break room, placing the tray on the table and writing a quick note
‘Just one for now!’
And she had an Apple she’d snagged just for Marty. A sweet autumn crisp. She’d never seen an Apple so large before! She wanted to make sure he got it, so she went looking.
@notjusttheowls
Sophia had schemed it well. None of the men had seen her set up this little treat board.
Perhaps he’d be embarrassed to admit it, but Marty was the first to discover the area. He’d finished going through a whole host of receipts for shipments and wanted to take a break to rest his eyes from staring at the tiny font. He stretched his arms above his head, giving a nice crack to his back, before meandering into the breakroom.
He froze for a moment, seeing the sudden difference of scenery. He came closer to read the note, and looked off at the apple. He blushed a deep red, realizing that he was the only one in the warehouse that had mentioned being on a health kick… Though the temptation of a cookie was luring.
“O-Oh gosh…”
He took the apple and went to pull out a chair to sit and eat it.
Sophia grinned from the shadows, flapping her hand excitedly when he picks it up. She kept watch from her spot, trying not to give her spot away
Thankfully, Marty wasn’t as observant as Li when it came to Sophia sneaking around. At least, not when he was distracted by food.
Thinking he was alone, he didn’t look so self conscious, and didn’t mind not sucking in his gut. He rested his arms on top of himself and took his first bites.
“You don’t taste half bad… Nice and sweet.”
It made her even more giddy to know he was enjoying it. She liked Marty. She was happy that he was happy.
After he was most of the way done, she stepped out of the shadows and waved excitedly
He was chewing slowing, savoring the taste. When he popped out, he coughed and sat up.
“S-Sophia- H-Hey, kid. Didn’t s-see you there.”
He sucked in his stomach a bit and put his arms on his legs rather than his chest.
You like fruit? I get it for you. You say you want things extra good for you
“Y-You got this for me? Gosh, Sophia… That’s… really nice of you. I do like it. It’s pretty good.”
Saying it out loud, the sentimentality got to him. It was a kind gesture. Nobody usually got things specifically for him.
Biggest apple I ever seen! Glad you like!
She gives him a big hug
He was surprised by the hug, and blushed bright red. He blinked a few times and hugged back. Even if he didn’t give hugs very often at all, he was naturally very comfortable to hug.
“O-Of course. I w-wouldn’t think you would think of m-me.”
M-A-R-T-Y best friends with V-I-C, V-I-C my bonus dad. M-A-R-T-Y……
A pause. She tries to decide what to call him
Not sure. But I like.
“Bonus dad? Ah, cause he wants kids too? That makes sense. He is good with you, even if he can be a little… reckless.”
He smirked at her not knowing.
“That’s ok, kid. I appreciate it, anyway.”
She gave him another hug, giggling.
She was a bit surprised nobody else had come into the break room yet. Briefly, she wondered if she needed to go show them off
What job today?
“Ah? Oh, just signing off on shipments. You know… when the boxes get to go on the trucks. I uh… check to make sure all the boxes are accounted for.”
It was likely a good idea, since Marty took his breaks at different times than most of the workers.
Ok! I join and give cookie to everyone!
She grabbed the tray, balancing it carefully on her prosthetic and her live forearm to head out of the break room
“C-Careful, there.”
He rushed to stand up after her, throwing out the core of his apple. He didn’t want her to drop it.
“W-Want me to hold it? Y-You uh… sure you want to follow me? My job’s probably boring for you.”
She nodded. Besides, she’d be doing stuff she liked to do, anyway.
"Alright... I suppose I can't stop you."
He leaned over to help stabilize the tray and maneuver it through the doorframe as they got out back to the warehouse.
Marty just picked up his next clipboard to get back to work, but some booming voice rang out.
"Mm-MM! What is that delizioso smell?"
Vic lumbered close, bypassing Marty to get to the tray.
Sophia grinned at Vic, holding the tray out, which still had her “only one” sign, now propped up on the actual tray itself
"Ah! I see. A treat for all of us? How kind, Signora! Grazie!"
He eagerly took a cookie and bit into it.
"Mm! This is fantastic! Marty, you get one yet?"
"U-Uh... N-No... Not yet..."
"You gotta!"
She offered the tray to Marty. She had gotten him an Apple, sure, but if he wanted a cookie, who was she to stop him
He lowered the clipboard from his face, a clear internal conflict going on behind his eyes as he considered.
"It's just one... Ok."
He scurried over and took a cookie, quite quickly scarfing it down in two bites.
"Good, no?!"
Vic put his hands on both Marty's shoulders and shook him.
"Y-Yeah. Yeah, it's good, Vic. Thanks, Sophia. Did you make these yourself?"
She paused. She had help so… not really. Unless they were asking if she helped too, because then the answer was yes. She hated when things weren’t clear, so she went with the first option, shaking her head.
"No?... Eh, that's ok, kid. They're still really good."
"They are homemade though, sì?"
"I-It doesn't m-matter, Vic... They're very good."
"Ah! Well, of course they are! The Signora would never bring anything less."
He winked and ruffled her hair.
Another grin, and she nodded quickly. Homemade indeed!
The hair ruffle made her giggle. She felt so special
"Ah, listen to the sound of that. Is there a nicer sound?"
Marty rubbed his neck.
"I don't know... bird calls?"
Vic didn't mind Marty's daftness at times. He continued to happily dote on the girl.
"We should make sure everyone gets a cookie! Right, Miss?"
Marty was silly. It made her giggle even more, before nodding at Vic
"Wonderful!"
Vic reached to pick her up and carry her on his shoulders, which was not very helpful for giving out cookies, because he was so tall... But also because, as he set her down, the tray hit the top of his head.
Marty grimaced.
"Y-You ok?"
"Yep! A-ok! Let's give out these cookies."
Marty blinked, but put his hands in his pocket, readying himself to follow Vic.
Sophia also grimaced, she didn’t mean to hit him— but also she wasn’t expecting to be picked up. And she was still holding the tray, so she couldn’t exactly protest politely.
Vic started marching along, with Marty following him like a duckling. The man tried to keep up with Vic, but his height and fervor made his speed hard to match.
Marty did his best to sprint, harshly landing on the hard, un-absorbing plastic of his prosthetic. That gave him a sort of peg-legged waddle. Eventually he made it close enough that he could ask.
“Sophia… Y…You good… up there?”
She frowned, shaking her head quickly. She wanted down. She was unpleased by this
Marty's expression changed, and he tugged on Vic to get him to stop. Before he could make progress on getting Sophia down, they were stopped.
"What, is the circus back in town?"
Mike meandered past them, stopping and walking backwards to rejoin the sight of them.
"Ah, Mike! Buongiorno."
Vic thankfully stopped at that, and Marty stepped on his tip-toes to try and get Sophia down.
"Here, hold on to me."
He reached his arms up to her.
She paused, trying to figure out how to do that while her hands were full.
She takes a moment, but hands the tray to Marty for him to put down, then hesitantly tries to climb off of Vic
He grimaced, trying to scramble to find a nearby box to set the tray on. He managed to find one, rushing back to hold his arms out and make sure she didn't tumble.
"Watchin' a whole act here."
"Ah? Oh! Climbing down, Signora? There you go."
He crouched down to help.
She huffed, then gave Marty a hug. She appreciated his help.
Hello M-I-K-E!
She waves
Made cookies! Want one?
Marty quite liked all these hugs, now that he wasn't caught off guard by them. He quickly stumbled back to give her room to approach Mike.
"Ah- Right."
He walked after her with the tray. Mike leered over them, looking to Marty with a raised eyebrow. He looked like a girl scout to him.
"Cookies... Yeah, I'll have one."
He precariously selected one near the middle of the tray and bit it. His expression was unreadable, as always.
She grinned, taking the tray back to hold, this was a blast
Marty gave it to her gingerly, still staring at Mike.
"So...?"
"They're good. Nice and chewy. Good going, kid."
She grinned at Mike, bouncing up and down happily. This was going splendidly!
She giggled some, then looked around to find the next people who would get a cookie.
The man gave a small smirk to her excitement. It was unclear if it was mockingly or finding her endearing. Maybe a bit of both.
“W-We’ll see you later, Mike. T-Thank you for taking one.”
Marty quickly sighed and trotted after Sophia. Vic stayed a second longer with Mike to talk, leaving Marty all alone again to figure out how to parent the girl.
Deeper in the warehouse, there was a little alcove that seemed to be playing… beach music? Tucked away amongst the shipping crates, Jim was sitting in a beach chair with sunglasses and a straw hat, reading a magazine.
“…Jim? What the… What the Hell are you doing?”
“Ah! Marty, my good fellow. And Miss Sophia, of course. I’m on lunch break. Well, I was. Now I’m doing work.”
“What work?”
Jim held up his magazine, which was a medical journal.
“Research.”
“…Do you do this everyday?”
“Usually, yes.”
She nodded to Jim, holding out the cookie tray
He lifted his sunglasses to get a look.
“Ah, cookies? Doesn’t really fit the tropics, but I won’t turn a sweet treat down!”
He took one and eagerly chomped it, reaching for a second.
She pulled it away, gesturing to her sign angrily
“Eh? W-What- Oh! I see. Darn. But, they’re very good!”
He tried to bargain.
“I don’t think that’s gonna work with her, Jim. Sorry, man.”
She stuck her tongue out at Jim, huffing, then looking to Marty
He patted her on the shoulder.
“I’m sorry he broke the rule.”
“Fine, fine. Thanks for the one cookie.”
She gave Jim a nod, heading off. If there were more cookies, he could have them, but she needed to make sure, first.
Marty followed her, waving bye to Jim. There were always some stray, lower-level employees about. Perhaps they could stop for all those groups, or Marty could give an announcement.
“Here, follow me, ok?”
She nods, smiling as she follows behind Marty. She liked him. He was a very good friend. She saw why Vic liked him so much
“Great. I uh… think this’ll work for your cookies.”
He walked her to the furthest wall, where people’s punch cards were. He picked off a megaphone from a hook and turned it on.
“Careful, it’s going to be loud… Attention, everyone. We uh… have cookies that everyone can come and take one from. So um… come get them. Thank you.”
That didn’t take very long for a large crowd of warehouse workers and masked men to approach them.
Sophia smiles, holding out her tray, making sure the sign was clear to see
Marty held her shoulders to make sure nobody trampled her.
"Only one cookie, fellas. Limited supply."
"Hey, move! Move!"
"You took mine!"
They fought over each other, arms tangling around and under to grab one.
Animals…
She kept that to herself, smiling for everyone to see. She was indeed happy that they were enjoying them enough to fight over it
"Alright. Alright. Uh... disperse."
Marty tried to encourage the group to get back to work after they had their cookie, instead of loitering and mingling.
Once the crowd had started to get sparse, he looked down at Sophia to see what she wanted to do. The tray was mostly empty by now.
She smiled up at him, pleased. Her grin was from ear to ear. What a successful endeavor!
He gave a chuckle. She was pleased by the simplest acts. Maybe all kids were like that. They just enjoyed doing things that seemed grand to them, he supposed.
"Good work, kid. I hope you had fun. Want me to bring you back to Li?"
She nodded. As fun as this was, she was ready for bed
"Perfect. I can uh... carry the tray for you if you want."
Part of him wanted to ask if he could have the rest of the cookies.
He started walking to direct her to the elevator.
She hands it over
You can have another if want.
The man blushed.
“R-Really? You… sure?”
He could’ve probably eaten the full tray on his own, if he was allowed before, but he felt shy about a second cookie now.
She nods
Have extra.
He felt a little more sheepish, having gotten permission. He reached out and took two more cookies, leaving one behind, for perhaps Sophia.
“T-Thank you.”
He brought her to the elevator, and pressed the number for her bedroom floor.
She nodded, smiling a bit as she leaned against the wall. This was fun, she should do it more.
Finally given permission, he chowed down on the cookies, looking thoroughly satisfied, more than any of the other employees.
The elevator quietly soared, and by the time it opened, Marty was done with his cookies, which was a feat he wasn’t proud of.
“Oh goodness. Uh… You ready to go to your room?”
I can do.
She smiles politely, taking the tray happily
He chuckled and put his hand on her shoulder to lead her. He put his other hand on the doorknob and let her inside the room.
“Oh gosh, you want me to take the tray back to… wherever you got it from?”
Kitchens.
She hummed
You want to? I can.
“Ah, that… makes sense. You’ve been going to the kitchens by yourself?”
He raised an eyebrow.
“No, no. I don’t want you tiring out. You must be sleepy from all that walking, right?”
She shrugged. It couldn’t have been that late, right? She wasn’t sure. So she took her cookie off the tray and headed toward her room
Sophia sneaks downstairs, she’d managed to convince one of the intern chefs to stay later than usual and help her make cookies, which she now was taking downstairs.

Sophia sneaks downstairs, she’d managed to convince one of the intern chefs to stay later than usual and help her make cookies, which she now was taking downstairs.
Avoiding Vic was the hardest part, she loved Vic. But this was for everyone! Even the idiots who tried to scare her.
So she hurried to the break room, placing the tray on the table and writing a quick note
‘Just one for now!’
And she had an Apple she’d snagged just for Marty. A sweet autumn crisp. She’d never seen an Apple so large before! She wanted to make sure he got it, so she went looking.
@notjusttheowls
She nods
Have extra.
@notjusttheowls

@notjusttheowls

Sophia smiles, holding out her tray, making sure the sign was clear to see
Sophia sneaks downstairs, she’d managed to convince one of the intern chefs to stay later than usual and help her make cookies, which she now was taking downstairs.
@notjusttheowls

He was surprised by the hug, and blushed bright red. He blinked a few times and hugged back. Even if he didn’t give hugs very often at all, he was naturally very comfortable to hug.

@notjusttheowls

Sophia sneaks downstairs, she’d managed to convince one of the intern chefs to stay later than usual and help her make cookies, which she now was taking downstairs.
Avoiding Vic was the hardest part, she loved Vic. But this was for everyone! Even the idiots who tried to scare her.
So she hurried to the break room, placing the tray on the table and writing a quick note
‘Just one for now!’
And she had an Apple she’d snagged just for Marty. A sweet autumn crisp. She’d never seen an Apple so large before! She wanted to make sure he got it, so she went looking.
@notjusttheowls
