Nine Great Fragrances for Fall
Spring/ summer scents are easy, but fall/ winter is when things get interesting. Where warm weather concoctions tend to rely on citruses, greens, and aquatics, cool weather smells tend to be a little boozier, cozier, and more comforting. Think: smoky woods, warm leathers, and interesting spices. If youāve ever been interested in exploring the world of fragrances, fall is one of the best times of the year to jump in.
The danger with cool weather scents is that they can sometimes be a little too bold. And, at least for me, I find fragrances are best when theyāre subtle. Thatās not just about going light on the number of sprays, but also choosing the right bottle. If youāre in need of some suggestions, here are nine that I particularly like (and personally wear):
Bandit by Robert Piguet: Leather is a popular category this time of year, but sometimes I find it a bit too smoky. Knize Ten, for example, is a classic, but it smells like the bottom of an ashtray. For a leather scent thatās easier to wear, try Robert Piguetās Bandit. Itās kinder, softer, and has a hint of jasmine.Ā
Cuir de Russie by Chanel:Ā Another easy leather. Chanel discontinued their EDT version and now only has the EDP (which I think is better anyway). It starts off a bit woodsy at first, but nicely breaks down into a musky, slightly dirty leather. Think of a fresh pair of lambskin leather gloves or leather car seats. Less floral than Bandit, but also not too smoky.Ā
Ambra by Acqua di Parma:Ā AdP is mostly known for their Colonia line, which is nice for spring/ summer, but their Ingredients collection is really better suited to colder weather. I like Ambra, which has an amber and sandalwood base, mixed with a healthy dose of vanilla. Itās dark and warm, but friendly at the same time. Like AdPāsĀ Colonia Assoluta, this feels especially good with casual suits and sport coats.Ā
Patchouli 24 by Le Labo:Ā Despite the name, Le Laboās Patchouli 24 has very little patchouli in it. Or at least itās masked by the overwhelming scent ofĀ peaty Scotch mixed withĀ lapsang souchong tea. Frankly not that easy to wear, but I find it comforting. For something a little easier on the nose, you can try Santal 33, which smells like pine needles blended with sandalwood.Ā
Wonderwood by Comme de Garcon: Better than Le Laboās Santal, in my opinion, is CdGās Wonderwood. Opens with a burst of pepper and incense, but then settles into something that smells like pencil shavings. Like CdGās other scents, this feels fun, unique, and unpretentious. Best during the day with a causal jacket and sweater.Ā
Azzaro pour Homme by Azzaro: One of the best fougeres of all time. Fougere being an earthy, fern-like group of scents thatāll remind you of the classic 20th-century barbershop. Azzaro pour Homme feels like the sort of thing a guy whoās not into fragrances would wear. A bit tooĀ āmanly manā for me sometimes, but also feels cozy on the right day.Ā
Vetiver by Guerlain:Ā An aromatic, woody vetiver with soft, soapy notes and a hint of tonka bean. For an alternative, you can also try Tom Fordās Grey Vetiver. Itās similar, but has more of a citrus opening, which makes it a better crowd pleaser (even if I think Guerlainās version is more interesting).Ā
Derby by Guerlain:Ā One of my favorites, despite the fact that it comes in an ugly bottle. Derby has so much going on: an oakmoss base with smoky woods and a hint of leather, which eventually evolve into something that smells like fresh soap. Although itās not technically a fougere, it has that classic barbershop feel. Luca Turin once called it one of the top ten best male fragrances of all time.Ā
Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene: Good fragrances donāt have to be expensive. Gray Flannel is a classic, having been around since 1975, and was a precursor to some of the woody, citrus accords that are popular today (e.g. Green Irish Tweed and Coolwater). Like those, this has a sweet herbaceous scent, but only costs $14. It doesnāt evolve much on the skin, but it also doesnāt break the bank. Plus, itās called grey flannel.Ā
As usual, if you want to try any of this stuff, stop by The Perfumed Court or Surrender to ChanceĀ and pick up a small spray vial. Itās a good way to sample a scent before committing to a whole bottle.Ā
tbh i mostly just smell like farts during fall

We were probably all pretty fuckinā unbearable anyway.Ā
someoneās uncle
The chassis grated a little deeper, scraping against the dense ice, broken apart by the slight and uneventful impact. Obviously, ice water slipped in through the cracks of the doors and under the dash. It wasnāt fast. Just a clock, a reminder of what was nigh.Ā
The uncle scrambled in his coat. Swishy as there was nowhere for the sound to go other than into the frosty windows or the still, rising water. Windows. The window on the driverās side had to come down. Water hadnāt yet reached the lowest point so even if he got it down, it wouldnāt accelerate the sinking. Insurance, for sure, wouldnāt be helping here. Heād be lucky if he got a tissue.Ā
The guy was an uncle to many. A bearer of a good laugh that was thick. He wouldnāt shut the fuck up either, so dinner was always joyous and noisy. You had to assume C-SPAN was always on as a refuge from his repetitive 40 hour work weeks -- he had an adept background knowledge on most legislation. Nothing was hard. But everything was boring -- which is a labor in itself.Ā
The window was coming down. The electric jolted and hummed. It was about halfway down. The water had almost reached the base of the window. It had been accelerating in itās leak through the base of his door. It was past his feet and well past the gas pedal. The chassis sunk and the water began to pour through the lowest end of his window like water flowing out of a vase. But here it was flowing into his car. It dumped onto his nylon hiking pants and sunk into his seat. The window shorted and stopped lowering.
He told one cousinās family about the NJ rent crisis at a dinner at a Bonanza. He told another cousinās family about the deer ticks in NJ on a hike through Maryland. Another about the crime while biking through the Finger Lakes. These were tangible issues. A dem, he related to them through his own boredom. He related because there was nothing better to do.
He was a big guy so he began the escape by popping his head out the window. It caught his hat. He popped an arm out and pushed up on the firm ice layer. He pulled his other arm out and pushed up and out.
Reactively, like a fucking little bitch she always was, the car sunk and the back wheels cracked and smashed through the ice. Oh god, he was so close. The window crashed down into the stream bed pulling his waist downward -- which was still encumbered by the car -- and his chest onto the ice bed. It cracked. He pulled himself upwards. The current caught his car. The ice gave way from under his grip. And he hurtled into the night, under the ice.Ā
