âa journalist?â evelyn was always good at ignoring anything but what she wanted to hear. âwell.. i plan..â she paused, hesitance running through her entire being. âi plan to travel to egypt.. despite mothers wishes..â she could barely admit it.. her fascination, her deep egyptian roots that her family ignored. âi love.. the preservation.. the tradition.. itâs so much more than we have here.â she shook her head, as if her dream wasnât real. âiâd love to travel.. to explore.. iâd like to escape..â
âThatâs right,â the chauffeur nodded, a faint smile gracing his features at the thought. âStandinâ around the garage wonât bring about change, but writing my own column might.â As he finished speaking, Tom looked up at Evelyn, blue hues catching the hesitation on her features. With a raised brow, the Irishman listened quietly to her plans. Only when she finished speaking did Tom give the woman a nod. âIt sounds like you know where your answers are,â he said, referring back to their earlier words. âBesides your motherâs wishes, whatâs holdinâ you back?â

âi believe.. that people are people and considering a certain type of person as more or less isnât right. so.. basically the same as you, in less words.â she teases, a smile gracing her lips. she pondered for a moment, wondering if she should tell him. âwhat did you want to do when you were little? i mean.. surely you didnât want to drive.âÂ
âThen it looks like we can agree on one thing,â he replied, grabbing the newspaper that was folded up next to his tools. Shaking open the paper, Tom looked up at Evelyn, catching her joke with an amused look. âExcept the amount of words it takes to get our point across.â Blue hues caught headlines of the impending war that loomed over the world. Almost immediately, the Irishmanâs features grew serious. He did not want to serve the very monarchy that left his country in a state of oppression. Evelynâs question, though, broke his train of thought. âCars were somethinâ Iâve always been handy at, and Iâve used that skill to get to where I am today. But I donât have my eyes set on beinâ a chauffeur forever.â He paused, a small smile appearing on his face at the recollection of a similar conversation with Sybil. âIâd like to write,â Tom answered. âIâd like to be a journalist.âÂ

âi donât really have many opportunities to ask anyone else, now do i?â evelyn sighed softly, hiking up her dress a tad to sit up on the work bench. âwell, what do you think about womenâs rights then? iâm assuming you were coaxing me into asking you anyway.â
âI suppose not,â he began, âbut that doesnât mean you have to stop searchinâ. One day, things will change. People will change.â Tom had never been one to settle for the status quo; instead, he kept his gaze turned ever forward--- beyond the struggles of his own country and further still to the struggles of humanity itself. At Evelynâs words, a light bit of laughter escaped the Irishmanâs lips. âI think you know my answer,â he replied. âIâm not one to keep my political beliefs to myself.â But as Tom watched her sit down, apparently waiting for him to speak, he decided that his previous words would not satisfy her. âWoman or man-- we should all be given the same rights and opportunities in this world. Thereâs no justice in holdinâ another back simply because of gender. And if you ask me, the path to justice starts with securing the vote.â A pause. âAnd what do you believe?â

âDo you think you can fix it?â
âDo you thinkâŚâ meme [x]
@tcket // Thanks so much for sending this in! :)
Sybilâs question brought a smile that seemed to dance in the Irishmanâs hues. Stuffing a hand in his pocket, Tom walked around the car that had left them stranded along the road. If his darling loveâs grandmother could see them now, she probably would blame the ânewfangled contraptionâ for their predicament. Tom, however, saw this as just a minor stumble that was necessary in order to move forward in the growing changes of their world. âIâll have her up anâ running before long,â he answered, lifting his gaze to meet Sybilâs. âI donât suppose these clothes will take kindly to a bit of grease on the collars, but Iâll change when we get home.â A soft, half-smile graced his features as he gestured to the apparel he would have worn to dinner that night. âWill you help me look for some tools in the back of the car?â he asked, pulling off his jacket.Â
Sybil let out a soft chuckle at the mans words, coming to carefully lean against the car beside him and watch as he worked. Unlike her husband the young woman moved with more caution, her years spent as a highborn Lady shining through. âLast time you said youâd be careful I ended up pregnant,â She playfully reminded him before her expression changed into one of seriousness. âI hope they have one soon, after everything the two have of them have been through over the years and now theyâre finally together and Matthewâs making Mary a better woman and heâs changed so much himself. And Iâm sure Sybbie wouldnât mind a playmate.â Her thoughts lingered on her sister and brother-in-law a moment more before snapping back to reality at the sound of Tomâs voice, to which she smiled. Of course she had know, her father had asked her to convince him to play, Sybil though had pretended not to listen to her father, telling him that âTom would so as he pleased.â. Smiling, she ran a hand through his hair affectionately. âItâs nice to see heâs beginning to acknowledge you as part of the family, he wouldnât have asked you if he didnât. Will you play?â
Tom looked over at Sybil, his lips parting as he tried to find the words. When no good response came to mind, the Irishman simply smiled. âWell, you got me there,â Tom winked, lifting his index finger to trace along Sybilâs jawline. Watching the way her smile had faded to seriousness, Tom grew quiet and listened thoughtfully. She was right. Mary and Matthew had been through quite enough, both individually and as a couple. It was high time they lived in happiness together (and possibly as a family). âDonât worry, mâdarling. Theyâll bring a child into this world before long, and weâll all be chasing Sybbie and her new cousin through the halls.â At the touch of his wifeâs hand, a soft smile began to form on Tomâs features. âI suppose he is, isnât he?â he mused, realizing that playing for the Abbey was like being part of the family. At Sybilâs question, though, Tom gave a playful shrug before dipping back under the hood of the car. âYou wonât mind your husband makinâ a fool of himself on the field? Itâll be the first time I ever played the game. Iâm bound to swing and miss.â
